BG Newsletter #14

So I'm pretty sure you're all noticing the green names floating around on the forums. Some of them used to be mod blue but now they are like well... like mine. Say hello to your BG Content staff! We're mostly focused on driving content on the forums. The newsletter, blogs, or maybe just threads to generate discussion or interest.

BG Member Of The Week: Fievel

Q. How long have you been a part of BG?
A. I joined the forum late 2008, but like many others I read for a while before joining.

Q. What is your favorite video game and why is it your favorite?
A. Chrono Trigger is without a doubt my favorite game, I play it at least once a year, usually two or three times. I love the music, characters, game play, you name it, not a single thing about that game that I don't love. Final Fantasy Tactics and Suikoden 1 are very close runner ups though!

Q. Let's face it, while BG is a lot of things, it is pretty well known for Final Fantasy. Do you have a favorite Final Fantasy character?
A. It's hard to choose one! I guess it would be Sabin, Final Fantasy 6 on the SNES(when it was FF3!) was the first game I ever played and I always loved playing Sabin. That has not changed throughout the years and I still enjoy suplexing a train today as much as I did when I was 3!

Q. What's something you find interesting about yourself?
A. Uhh not much really, just another nerd on the internet.

Q. What is something that has you excited for next year?
A. Heavensward!

Major Game Releases Arriving This Week:

Release Date: 12/16/2014
PS4

Mina: This isn't actually a new release but it's coming out on the PS4 and I'm DESPERATE for game releases at the end of the year. In case you want to know what it is, it's like a Team Fortress meets Borderlands and probably several other games. It's free to play on PC already and will continue to be on the PS4.
Sonomaa: Team Fortress meets Borderlands? Sign me the fuck up! I havent heard about this game until now but Im going to take a look at it a little bit further, give it a poke or three. Im very very tempted to get a PS4 soon so this might be something I fool around with on it.
(BGer of the Week) Fievel: Had never heard of it so I checked out a trailer. Looks like the type of game that would be fun to sit on the couch with some friends and play. Reminds me quite a bit of team fortress 2.

Mina: Arc Sys pretty much gets this week all to themselves to release this insane fighting game. So what to say, what to say... it's an anime fighter? I think the thing that probably gets me to really like this more so than most fighters is the overdrives and instant kills are so... sooo... anime...... DESTROYED.
Sonomaa: Early impressions of this game are that it looks really really awesome but has a few game breaking issues. Im a secret fan of anime fighters because they always look so good but I really wish they didnt have some of the broken things in them. Ill get this when its cheaper like I do with most of them.
(BGer of the Week) Fievel: Game looks great! I don't play fighting game but I have a close friend who plays them seriously and I love watching him play. I'm sure he'll be picking this up so I'll be seeing it more soon!

Random Comic:

CTRL+ALT+DEL. Not on my top ten favorite webcomics but still worth bringing up when people want to see a successful webcomic. Nothing makes me feel old like thinking back to the original aesthetic of the comic and seeing how much it has grown since then. Despite the humblest of beginnings, we have what we see today. I personally have trouble finding positives about the comic because I find that others accomplish what CAD tries to do better. My opinions aside; it's somewhat story driven so it may be hard to simply just jump into the comic wherever. There are plenty of references to video games, comics, and other geek culture.

    Trivia Question #2 got me.

Ctrl + Alt + Del was one of the many webcomics I read when I was in college, but I stopped after the whole miscarriage storyline. That arc was beyond cringeworthy.

I don't think I even made it to that arc. XD CAD never did it for me.

Trivia #2: I'm probably wrong, but the first game I remember using the Konami code on was Contra for the NES. Awesome times!

It's actually Gradius (AKA Nemesis) when it was ported to the Famicom/NES. The code was made because Hashimoto found the game to be too hard for play testing so he created the code for that but forgot to remove it. Because it became so popular and well loved, they snuck it in future games. :D But I think most Americans would immediately say Contra because that was what popularized it. Or rather what it's most famously known for. But even looking at the game from both Japanese and NA release dates, Gradius/Nemesis beats it.

Boooooo on CAD, B^Uckley is a thing the internet should let fade away.

    XD poor CAD.

So, I guess to not be part of the CAD bashing...

Tim actually rebooted the story completely in the last month after giving Ethan and Lucas like...a year off. So, there's not really any need to go back and cover a lot of old story, unless you basically want to read a "finished" webcomic.

That's interesting. I followed CAD very closely in the early days of the webcomic and eventually dropped off along with next week's webcomic and never bothered picking either back up. Still it was too important a part of webcomic history to just forget about it and I'm trying to keep a healthy balance of old and new webcomics.
