Music Friday: Agent of Enquiry

Rate this Entry

Afternoon! Let’s all thread together through the treacherous path of the final day of the work week joined by some great music!

If you follow me on Twitter (if not, why haven't you?!) you were probably expecting this theme to be this week's featured musical piece. "Agent of Enquiry" is a piece from Final Fantasy XIV and theme of one of the most special characters from that game the entire FF universe.

It's a song that borders on goofyness, and for good reason: Hildibrand Heliodor Manderville - Inspector Extraordinaire, Agent of Enquiry - is a "joke" character, originally created for a small series of inn-related quests during the original XIV. He's... well, the FFWiki marvelously defines him:

Hildibrand is a slapstick stooge whose idiocy is quickly realized by everyone he meets with the exception of his airheaded sidekick Nashu.
The character was so popular that he became a recurring character, and when the game transitioned to A Realm Reborn he was given his own sidequest chain, which started in the 2.1 patch and "concluded" (?) in the recent 2.5. The chain is known for being filled with ridiculous circumstances and humorous moments - though the events behind it all are actually very dangerous. A particular point is that Hildibrand quests feature characters doing impossible things accompanied by funny comedy noises. A sample, but this is a spoiler from the 2.2 questline (fun stuff starts at the minute mark):

It doesn't take deductive powers to know the character is popular, and it's - in my humble opinion - one of the best things to ever come from FFXIV. I love how Twitter XIV folk now refers to Gilgamesh - another FF staple character - as "Greg", a misnomer Hildibrand refers to him as during one of his quests. So, this weekend put on your thinking cap, do a /hildy and be a...

Mander-Mander-Manderville Man,
Doing what only a Manderville can,
From the peaks of Coerthas to Thanalan,
Mander-Mander-Manderville man...
