Music Friday: Scrambled Valkyrie

Hello! Let’s all tread together the treacherous path of the final day of the work week joined by some great music!

Do you like shmups? Shoot-'em-ups! That game genre about ships that fly, shooting everything in sight, usually while dodging insane amounts of enemy fire? R-Type, Gradius, Axelay and many more are well known to gamers of the genre. There's a particular Japanese shmup that I didn't find out until years later because it never came to America.

Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie is based on the Macross anime, which us American audiences (at least those old enough) may know as "Robotech". I really liked the show as a child, so when I found out this game existed I checked it out using SNES emulation. The game is excellent, one of the best shmups I have played. The formula is pretty much intact and the spin is that, as in the series, your ship can transform between 3 stances: ship, ship with legs, full robot mode (they probably have proper names) and each mode has different weapons and speed.

The soundtrack is good, though far from spectacular - shmups are not particularly contenders to "OST of the Year". The BGM from the first level, though, is quite catchy and compliments the action very well; this is the theme I share today!

    I can't say I'm a fan of the genre in general but some of them are right up my alley.
    Ikaruga and RayStorm are a couple of my favorite and wouldn't ya know it? They both also have great music.

    I like how most of them have very upbeat and "boomy" music. Fits very well with the action-heavy screen

    Haha, yep! And speaking of good shmup music, not sure how I forgot this. Been one of my favs for ages.
