As someone who has never really watched anime apart from Ninja Scroll or Akira a long time ago, I'm wondering what is so special about them? From the ones that I've seen they just seem so simplistic and about silly facial expressions I don't see how someone could get into it.

Probably because you've only seen a few of the crappy ones. There's nothing special about them, like American cartoons you get the good and bad ones it's just about what you like and what you want to watch.

Seems pretty small minded to say "I don't see how someone could get into it", because the answer is simple: we like it.

It's like saying "I don't see how people can obsess about cars and rap music" but they can because they like it and enjoy it, so leave it at that.

4chan must really like Lucky Star...odd that after 1 episode which didn't actually contain much. I'd say it had as much plot and direction as Excel Saga, minus most of the funny.

Simply being anime doesn't necessarily make something *good*. However, anime is incredibly varied. While there are definitely trends, you really can't generalize the medium as a whole. It's like saying all American comic books have spandex and one-liners, or that all video games revolve around shooting things for points.

Anime as a genre is not limited to school comedies or giant robots. It's simply the medium in which they're presented. There are things that are kinda typical, or that western audiences would find odd...but hey, it's a different culture, that's how it goes.

Animu thread without Berserk? How is this possible? I will avoid posting the descriptions of the characters as each one provides an assload of spoilers that will ruin the animu for you. And since it's not really popular and dubbed, you won't be finding it on crunchyroll or youtube, so you're going to have to torrent it.

http://tinyurl.com/f4t8h = the torrent, torrentspy likes to produce long ass URLs and it'd probably stretch the page. Just use utorrent and download the first 3(THIS IS IMPORTANT) episodes. If you dislike it after watching those 3... you probably lied about watching them.

After you finish the animu, read the manga at stoptazmo(trust me on this, if you finish the anime you WILL read the manga), although it is still running and being produced at an incredibly slow rate (it's supposed to be twice a month but Kentaro Miura likes to take long ass breaks for no reason)

uhh, fuck the anime, just go straight into the manga. anime sucks compared to what the manga offers, just try to get past the first 2 volumes, because in comparison to the later volumes they suck.

The anime is a great introduction to Berserk. The anime is anything but suck.

Besides, the manga only really gets good after the eclipse and Guts gets his Dragon Slayer. Also, 2 days until a new chapter

IMO, just go for the manga version of Berserk. The anime is definitely good...however...it just leaves you hanging due to where it leaves off (and from running out of money and not even having the last episode), and doesn't show things that are key to the larger story to boot.

That being said, you could probably jump into the manga at chapter 13 or whatever after watching the anime and not be completely lost. Still another 20 or so after that to digest XD

compared to the manga it is. It's decent at best, manga is great from the golden era onwards, which the anime covers but still, no where near as well. I don't think anyone could animate Miura's style.

It wasn't a cut at anyone in particular, so don't take offense. All I was saying was that I remember the cartoons when I was growing up (Thundercats, GI Joe, etc) and thought they were a lot better. You can't say that some people take the whole Anime a bit too far and freak out over all things Japanese. You state that the animes that I've seen are shitty, well what makes these better? Character development, the animation, etc?

What I meant by saying "I don't see how someone could get into it" had more to do with I don't see what makes it so special apart from other cartoons; not "I don't see why people think this garbage is so special".

Anime tends to have a lot more range than western animation. At least in terms of target demographic and in turn subject matter.

It's one thing to have someone obsessing over Ed, Ed, and Eddy or Spongebob...another to have 'em be into Cowboy Bebop and Black Lagoon.

Keep in mind that some of the old-school 80s shows *were* anime. Thundercats, Robotech, etc. Also keep in mind that you're remembering them as you perceived 'em growing up, or with a fondness from then if rewatching. Try watching the GI Joe movie again, and try not to wince.

I definitely thing people take the whole Japanese thing too far, but then again I lived there (along with several other countries) growing up. It's another country, things are different, not necessarily better. Just makes me think of Japanese kids doing the exact same thing with American stuff >.>

The ones you've seen aren't shitty per-se. Ninja Scroll is good, if formulaic. Akira is, well, confusing due to being a 1k+ page manga squished into a couple hours...but personally I still find it an amazing example of hand drawn animation from the old days.

What might be more appropriate to say is that there's probably anime out there you'd like. You just may not have watched it.
Even past friends I've had who weren't all that keen on anime found the occasional movie or show they thought was cool (Cowboy Bebop is typical for that).

Like anything else, it's subjective. But just due to sheer volume of stuff out there...you may not want to dismiss it entirely =P

    GJ Priran D:

Lucky Star doesn't really appeal to me either..

/a/ currently likes Lucky Star due to the fact that the intro was hard to understand and sounded like something silly.

other animu you are currently likely to find on /a/'s front page:
Death Note, Nanoha, random Rozen Maiden thread #0380138081, and Touhou (not an anime)

Lucky Star is definately not for everyone. It's really not drama inflated; it requires people to appreciate the small chuckles in everyday life to understand its values(as well as a good understanding of Japanese culture and their unique style of sarcasm). If you think that animes should be all about supernatural si-fi grounds, always have some kind of hero or some people die, and be filled with huge up and downs, don't watch Lucky Star.

In fact Lucky Star has four volumns of manga out already, check out the first couple chapters and if you yawn, stay away from the anime.

There is 2 reasons why people watch anime usually: nice story, and/or funny. Not many show on TV here are story oriented, so we have to look somewhere else to get our fill. Of course, not that many animes are worthwhile in the end, but there is always 2-3 that are awesome every year, and a few more that are worthwhile.

Third reason why people watch anime is fanservice, but I won't get into that >_>

Download Death Note and watch the first 4 episodes (can do it on youtube). Download Full Metal Panic fumoffu and watch the first few episodes too. If you like them, you will understand why people watch anime, if you don't....well, I guess it's not your thing.

I didn't take offense, I was just stating something I felt. I watch a variety of things, Japanese, American, English, Korean etc doesn't matter to me as long as I like it. So yeah, but people do freak out a little personally I think Japan is better for "cartoons" and America is better for TV shows (like Lost, 24, Jericho etc). Anyway enough about that.

I can understand most of those (Rozen Maiden especially), but uhh, apart from the moe factor to Lucky Star what else is there? Actually that might be enough for some people >.>

You got a point, but I was expecting it to be a little like Azumanga Daioh which is a very similar thing, slice of life type thing with weirdness and Japanese humour thrown in. I get what they are doing but I still didn't find it that funny.
