College Football Bowl Season Discussion Thread (and BG Bowl Pick Em)

College football's regular season is over, and the bitching about bowl placements is already in extreme overdrive. It's also Bowl Pick Em time, which lets you pick the winners of each of the 35 bowls, and rank them in confidence from 1 to 35; the higher the confidence rank, the more points you get for getting it right. This game has the advantage of not having to check it every week, so it's something you can enter once and forget about, rather than forgetting by week 3 and being hopelessly behind.

I figure we can also use this thread for bitching about LSU-Alabama rematch, bitching about the ACC having two teams in the BCS, or whatever injustices your team has suffered lately (my team has not suffered any injustices, they just suck).

To enter, you'll need to register on ESPN.com, but you can disable spam e-mails if you're worried about it. All of them do have a grand prize of some sort if you finish first amongst all the thousands upon thousands of entries in the game, so you might want to use real contact information just in case.

Also, please try to incorporate your BG handle somehow into your team name, or at least post in this thread with your super creative team name so we can bestow you with all the accolades and everlasting respect you deserve by becoming the Grand Foosball Poobah of BG.

There will only be one winner because ties suck, and in the event of a tie, I will use ESPN's tiebreakers for the grand prize to establish a group winner.

$$$. The Sugar Bowl thought they could make more money, through ticket sales and TV revenue, with Virginia Tech vs. Michigan than any other combination. I initially thought that Virginia Tech coming off a blowout loss, from a weak conference, wouldn't be that attractive to the Sugar Bowl; Virginia Tech is also very used to going to BCS games, a consolation BCS bowl isn't necessarily something their fan base would get mobilized and excited about. I would have put them behind Boise State, and Kansas State, for sure, as both of those fan bases would be motivated. I also thought West Virginia might be desirable for their traveling fan base, but I guess the Sugar Bowl preferred Tech over West Virginia, and I'm sure they're smarter about the finances than I am. Both teams travel well, but Tech is pretty clearly the better team. At some point, I'm hoping to see an interview with the Sugar Bowl selection committee, to see what they would have done had Virginia Tech beaten Clemson and not been available. I'm curious which of the three teams above they would have taken, or if they would have dipped a little further down to take Oklahoma, who was BCS eligible.

From a competitive standpoint, I would have liked to have seen Kansas State vs. Boise State, but having games matched up based on competition and quality of teams is a pipe dream, beyond #1 and #2. At least the Fiesta and Rose Bowl should be good games between deserving opponents.

Virginia Tech is a very good travelling team. And sadly, that's all that really matters to the bowl. The network probably actually pretty pissed at the selection themselves. Boise State, ever since beating OU a few years ago, does well on TV. But, to the bowl promoters, butts in seats is king. Hence why Notre Dame gets their exclusive BCS rule. Notre Dame could play a bowl game in Antarctica against Rocco's College of Typewriter Repair for Blind Women and sell out 80,000 seats.

Kstate and Boise St both got the hose this year, especially KState. 10 wins in the Big12 this year is no joke. What can you expect though when people are trying to make money and the good ol' boys club only wants to see traditional powers play.

Another year, another trip to Shreveport for Mizzou. Should be a good matchup with UNC at least.

Just wanted to point out that Wisconsin has more top-10 finishes in the BCS era than LSU or Bama. The only teams with more top-10 finishes and more BCS appearances are Ohio State, Florida, Oklahoma, and USC.
