BG AUTO: Car Chargers and New Cars

Despite still loving my '99 Saturn SC2, it's getting to be that time to look for a newer car. With cigarette lighters being a thing of the past, we're left with accessory ports that don't stay on when the car is off. Is there a way to get around that other than charging while driving and then continuing inside the house?

It kinda sucks that I won't be able to leave my phone charging in my car when I'm getting something to eat at a restaurant for example. I'm also wondering why these new ports don't stay on like cigarette lighters do.

I can't help with your question, but I regret trading in my 98 SC2. Thing was so easy to work on, super cheap insurance, and great on gas. DON'T DO IT MAN!

My company car is a 2013 Ford Fusion. It charges the entire time the engine is off.

If your new rig doesn't have one, there are after market USB charging ports you can install in a convenient place in your new car. If you don't feel up to the installation (not difficult), you can have it done at Car Toys or some other outfit.

Most newer vehicles have at least one power port that is direct to the battery and at least one that is wired to the accessory position on your ignition. Look around if this is an issue for you. There are many many cars that have these.

If you are savvy enough, you can install your own 12V adaptor and/or USB charging port. There are kits all over and all you need is access to the fuse panel and some basic skills to cut the dash and install the port.

I assumed that it's only the cheap models that have the only port on the accessory circuit.

My dodge has a port in the center console that charges while the car is off

Nissans (at least hte last few years) have an always-on and an on-when-the-car-is-on port. I use one for my phone, the other for GPS when I'm on longer trips.
