Niconico Super Conference - Famitsu Summary Translation (4/25-4/26)

The information below is a translation of the article which was a digest of information from Part 1 of the Producer Letter LIVE that was held during Niconico Super Conference on 4/25. If there's a summary for the 4/26 letter that gets published, or anything else worth translating, I'll add that on later.

FFXIV Fighting Game?! Producer Letter LIVE Summary (Part 1) [Niconico Super Conference 2015]

On April 25 and 26, 2015, Final Fantasy XIV was exhibited at Niconico Super Conference 2015 held at Chiba Makuhari Messe. This article will discuss the contents of Part 1 of the Producer Letter LIVE was held as a stage event on April 25 right after the opening announcements that took place earlier.

The FFXIV booth was billed as "Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn becoming Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward" with a number of attractions and events that we previously reported on. Prior to the opening of the events, Naoki Yoshida, producer and director of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, appeared on stage. He loudly proclaimed the opening in front of a full house of fans who were there since the early morning.

New Dragoon Limit Break in the Benchmark Software?!

Immediately after the opening, part 1 of the Producer Letter LIVE was held as a stage event. This is a very popular program in which Yoshida himself talks about previously undisclosed information about FFXIV. At the beginning of this one, a trailer video was unveiled which showed the movie that you can see in the benchmark software for Heavensward.

Here's a summary of the comments that Yoshida reviewed:
    • The video was edited and shortened to the current 9 minutes. A lot of the staff was involved with the production, including assistant director Hiroshi Takai.
    • The benchmark software will be released on April 27.
    • It will be available for download from a special site which will be launched that day.
    • It will be both DirectX 9 and DirectX 11, with the ability to switch from one to the other with the click of a button.
    • PC scanning algorithms have been updated since the launch of FFXIV. Last time, the emphasis was placed on the framerate, but this time it will measure the comprehensive performance of the PC such as CPU power and memory speed.
    • Since the algorithm has changed, your score may fall slightly from the existing benchmark software, but that doesn't mean your PC's performance has deteriorated.
    • It will be possible to go through Character Creation for Au Ra. You'll be able to select all of the parts, like face and eye shapes.

Job Quests in Heavensward are no longer in increments of five levels!

After the talk about the release of the benchmark was over, the broadcast moved on to its main theme. Yoshida went to the Niconico live broadcast and directly responded to comments that were being received from players. The new information that was released during these exchanges is summarized below - the speaker is in parentheses.

    • In the two months prior to the release of Heavensward, we'll be performing small updates like Hot Fixes. (Yoshida)
    • Additional adjustments to the Final Coil of Bahamut are scheduled to be performed. (Yoshida)
    • They are currently considering whether they should open the restriction on Allagan Tomestones of Poetics. (Yoshida)
    • (The current maximum) Item Level 135 will be too high compared to the item level for Heavensward. (Yoshida) [[I have no idea what this means, I don't know if it was a weird quote out of context or whether they're reducing overall ILs or what.]]
    • Work on add-ons has been postponed because priority was given to the development of Heavensward. After things settle down following the release of the expansion, they'll continue work on it. (Yoshida)
    • More than two new job actions will be added to each of the existing jobs. (Yoshida)
    • New job quests are no longer at five level increments. (Takai)
    • There will be changes to the increments for quests for battle, gathering, and crafting classes. Along with these, you'll be able to learn quite a few new actions. (Takai).
    • They are reviewing the action rotations for basically all jobs. (Yoshida)
    • The black mage skill rotation will be quite different. (Takai)
    • Many existing actions will be adjusted. (Yoshida)
    • They have begun working on an improvement to displaying TP but this won't be ready in time for the release of Heavensward. (Yoshida)
    • There will not be Zodiac weapons for new jobs; however, there will be primal weapons. (Takai)
    • They are planning adjustments to ease the existing Saga of the Zodiac Weapons for the release of Heavensward. (Yoshida)
    • Battles will change considerably for summoner with the new added actions. (Takai)
    • It's still secret at this time, but there will be various changes, like to Tri-something-or-other. (Yoshida) [[Tri-distaster, I would assume]]
    • They are aware that the capacity of the current Armoury Chest is too low. Right now, since there's no way to add to this without increasing the write time to the back end servers, it will take a bit more time to work this out. (Yoshida)
    • The number of retainers that can be employed will increase. (Takai)
    • Additional land will be added for purchase after the release of Heavensward. (Yoshida)
    • The number of items you can store in your Armoire will increase. (Yoshida)
    • With the increase in level cap for adventurers, the rank cap of companion chocobos will also rise. (Yoshida)
    • There will be fishing in the new areas. (Takai)
    • It will be possible to start from level 1 with the Au Ra race. However, it will be necessary to have access to the Heavensward expansion pack to do so. (Yoshida)
    • You can create an Au Ra even if you have not finished the main quest. (Takai)
    • The specifications are already planned for the "practice mode" for raid dungeons. However, the implementation won't be simultaneous with the release of the raid dungeon itself, it will be a little behind. (Yoshida)
    • They plan to add two rider flying chocobos after the release of Heavensward. (Yoshida)
    • There is still an implementation plan for the summoning system where adventurers can call a primal. Since there's currently a lot of content already planned to be implemented, it's been moved to the back of the list for now.
    • For PvP, once they make adjustments to Frontlines, they will continue working on Wolves' Den. (Yoshida)
    • They are thinking about whether they should add rewards to or adjust the difficulty of Steps of Faith. Although the clear rate of the battle isn't too low, they realize the battle can be quite long. Once they decide what to do, it'll be added as an adjustment in one of the patches. (Yoshida)
    • The new Zodiac Weapon story will kick off in patch 3.1. (Yoshida)
    • They are planning for the new weapon story to be somewhat elaborate. (Takai)
    • The "Beginner's Hall" facility has become quite a bit larger than they were originally planning for. Since they already began work on the specifications, the implementation time shouldn't be too far off. (Yoshida)
    • A new large scale Gold Saucer attraction will gradually begin to be implemented from patch 3.1. New Triple Triad cards will be ready for the release of Heavensward. (Takai)
    • The new Crystal Tower type large-scale raid for 24 people will be released in patch 3.1. (Yoshida)
    • They aren't currently thinking about any release for DirectX 12, they will be sticking with DirectX 11 for a while. (Yoshida)

[[Rest of the article went into a bunch of unimportant details about the other silly stuff that happened at the live letter like the Ultimate Fight thing and cool stuff that you won't see outside of Japan like the Heavensward edition PS4, and they mentioned they also have plans for a FFXIV design PS Vita and PS Vita TV.]]

    Commentary on Building the World

On April 25 and 26, 2015, Final Fantasy XIV was exhibited at Niconico Super Conference 2015 held at Chiba Makuhari Messe. As one of the stage events about Heavensward prior to it's June 23 release, the staff in charge of world setting came to the stage. They described the city-state of Ishgard which will be the centerpiece of the expansion.

At the stage event where the world setting team discussed Ishgard, appearing on stage were FFXIV main scenario writer Kazutoyo Maehiro, Banri Oda, in charge of world lore, and localization lead Michael-Christopher Koji Fox. These are some of the people behind the mystery-filled stories of FFXIV, so in speaking about the creation of Eorzea, they explained some basic facts which will help to enjoy the story of Heavensward more thoroughly.

The theme of the talk was the city-state of Ishgard and its surrounding area which will become the stage for a new adventure. They began with commentary on the recently published walkthrough videos discussing the story and features of the city and field areas. The information is introduced in a digest below. Note that there are likely to be other new areas introduced in Heavensward, so this is not an all-inclusive list.

New Area Commentary 1: Imperial Capital Ishgard

When you first begin Heavensward, the city-state is the first location you'll visit. While they have long refused a relationship with the other nations, because the situation has suddenly changed, adventurers have been granted permission to enter the imperial capital. The city is divided into a lower and upper area - the lower area is where the ordinary citizens live, and it will have a grim atmosphere with the impact of the war evident. The upper area is filled with the nobility of Ishgard, and the effects of war won't be seen on the majestic buildings that point skyward. As followers of the war god Halone, the Ishgard Orthodoxy and its churches and cathedrals are found there. The hero's statues will also be here, with the myth of the twelve knights talked about in the story more than before.

Six years have already passed (since the announcement of the city of Ishgard). The setting of the imperial capital was present since the era of old FFXIV, but it does not look the same as it did back then. Actually, they had previously prepared classes like duelists and shepherds. (Koji Fox)

Although it wasn't implemented as a class, we created kind of a "dueling court" based on the duelist class. We're taking advantage of the Heavensward setting to bring in some elements like those which never saw the light of day. (Oda)

You'll be able to see the impacts of the dragon attacks on the lower section, which will emphasize that the country is at war. (Oda)

On the other hand, since the upper section is home to the nobility, it will be lined with glittering buildings. (Maehiro)

The civilians of Ishgard are obedient to the orthodoxy which has the power. The high ranking people are affiliated with the religion and the cathedral. (Oda)

New Area Commentary 2: Coerthas Western Highlands

This will be an area filled with ice as far as the eye can see. This region previously appeared in the original FFXIV as a green meadow, but it was changed completely by the seventh Calamity caused by Bahamut and isolated by ice. Nostalgic locations from the original FFXIV like Camp Riversmeet and Falcon's Nest will return, and you'll also see the remnants of the old Aetheryte that was there.

The road leading to Coerthas Western Highlands can already be seen somewhere in Snowcloak. (Oda)

Coerthas Western Highlands was the first area considered for new locations in Heavensward. During production the team got excited and created more content than expected, it was originally only supposed to be about half of what it is. (Koji Fox)

New Area Commentary 3: Dravania Highlands and Dravania Lowlands

The Dravania Highlands are filled with lush jungle trees. This place is located further west than the Coerthas Western Highlands. The tallest mountain in Eorzea is also located here, called [[something like "Som Al"]]. Note that this name is from the dragon language. The new Gnath beast tribe calls this area their home.

I made up the dragon language six years ago. Since the dragons have been alive for thousands to tens of thousands of years, we were focused on how their language would change in its history. We decided that they would not have long words, so each word is derived from one of 10-20 shorter patterns. Another idea behind the dragon language is that the past and present tense are the same because of their long history. (Koji Fox)

The Dravania Lowlands are a field area with large amounts of water. Water flows down from the mountains to form a river that runs centrally through the area. In many areas there are ruins of the ancient cities of Sharlayan.

Since the people of Sharlayan were focused on wisdom and philosophy, the naming conventions were made with Greek archetypes in mind. (Koji Fox)

The architecture was also designed with Greek styles in mind. The dragons have not come to the areas where the people of Sharlayan once lived. (Oda)

New Area Commentary 4: Dravania Sea of Clouds

Above the high towering mountains of Dravania Highlands is the world of the heavens. The reasons that you'll find areas like ruins in a place like this are a major part of the story. It's a dangerous area inhabited by countless dragons.

It might be said that this is really the base for the dragons. (Maehiro)

The seven major [["Tenryu"]] heavens' dragons will become heavily involved in the story that starts with Heavensward. (Maehiro)

Our first introduction to the dragon world was with Midgardsormr. The seven major heavens dragons are his children, and have great power. Nidhogg is one of the seven heavens dragons which has already been involved in the job quests for dragoon. In addition to Nidhogg, the other six will become involved during the story. (Oda)

The Au Ra group is made with the image of the devil. Their designs are inspired by demons, not dragons. Because of this, even though they have a similar appearance to dragons, they won't be especially persecuted by city residents. (Oda)

New Are Commentary 5: Abalathia Sea of Clouds

Abalathia is a rural area located to the east of Ishgard. As you can tell from the name Sea of Clouds, it's also a field area floating in the sky. Since there will be great differences in altitude in this location, there will be many locations that you'll need a flying mount to reach.

The new Vanu Vanu beast tribe lives in the Abalathia Sea of Clouds. (Maehiro)

When we create new field areas, the lore group proposes landmark buildings which would be found in the area. The background area creation team is responsible for creating those ideas. Since the lore team doesn't instruct much beyond that to the BG team, we're often amazed by the end product. For that reason, taking inspiration from the end product of the BG team, we incorporate new elements into the story. (Oda)

    New Area Commentary 6: ???

For the last area discussed, just one photo was shown.

This is a magic continent (laughs). This will also be a large field area, and tough adventures will happen here. (Maehiro)

When we went through naming the locations in this area, we somehow got into a lot of detail about genetic recombination technology. (laughs) (Koji Fox)

This was one of the things that we decided to not show in the benchmark software we're releasing on April 27. By the time we had everything adjusted, it was already complete. (Maehiro)

New Dungeon: Library of Illusions [[possibly "Fantasy Library" - something like that]]

Here, Maehiro released a video of a new instanced dungeon called the Gubra Library of Illusions.

During some of the dialogue in the main quest of patch 2.4, Y'shtola references that a particular matter may require further investigation in the Library of Illusions. [[Does anyone remember this?]] In ways like that, the current scenario already pointed towards elements from Heavensward. (Oda)

Since there are no people from Sharlayan left, the Gubra Library of Illusions is an unmanned facility. (Maehiro)

The stage event ended with closing remarks to viewers.

Regarding the story of FFXIV, there are many people and area and item names associated with various main quests and job quests, but it's a great pleasure to work on it. Thanks! (Koji Fox)

I was a little nervous about this talk, but I had fun. For those who've been playing since the original FFXIV, we kept you waiting around five years, but you'll finally get to go to Ishgard in June. Please enjoy it! (Oda)

You'll get to explore a lot of new field areas in Heavensward, I think it will be a lot of fun. (Maehiro)

(The current maximum) Item Level 135 will be too high compared to the item level for Heavensward. (Yoshida) [[I have no idea what this means, I don't know if it was a weird quote out of context or whether they're reducing overall ILs or what.]]
I believe this means that the beginning content for Heavensward will be tuned towards lower iLV. Probably to allow people that will join later and will not get all the good gear at lv 50 and instead just keep on leveling.

Heavensward content will most likely start from ilvl 90-100 then go up from there. When it catches up or surpasses 135 is anyone's guess.

Going back to my WotLK days, I believe it was around level 56 that the previous expansions' top-tier raid gear started becoming defunct. It felt about right, if I can recall.

It saddens me that they're still sticking with easy mode backward progression of face roll 24-man raid in odd numbered patch.

FFXIV Producer Letter Live Part 2 from Niconico Super Conference 2015

The producer letter live is a popular streamed broadcast held by FFXIV producer and director Naoki Yoshida to deliver the latest information directly to players. The event has been broadcast from various locations, both from the studio at Square Enix headquarters and from several traveling locations. This event was broadcast from Niconico Super Conference 2015 which was held on April 25 and 26 - this article will focus on the remarks from the 26th.

Creating Au Ra in the Benchmark Software!

In this broadcast, the focus was on the benchmark software which would be released to the public on April 27. The team unveiled character creation of the Au Ra group and also held a Q&A session with questions received from players. The two were mostly unrelated, so both are summed up below.

First, we'll focus on character creation. All of the remarks are from Yoshida.

    • After choosing the option for a DirectX version, it will be possible to change corresponding settings. The default setting is DirectX 9.
    • The Au Ra Xaela have generally darker skin, but you'll be able to adjust the brightness to an extent.
    • There are four types of tail designs that you can choose, and you can also change the length.
    • One of the new specifications allows for removal of the pupil's outline.
    • There are a great deal of different selections you can make for face designs, like with face paint.
    • You can test a variety of equipment from swimsuits to armor to check your character's appearance.
    • The male Au Ra also have a wide variety of appearance from handsome to burly.
    • It took a lot of work to iron out the clipping issues with Au Ra horns.
    • For Au Ra Xaela males, depending on the horns chosen, the face can change significantly.

TP viewing from party list to be added after the release of Heavensward

The following are answers to questions that were received while character creation for Heavensward was going on. Yoshida, Minagawa, and Takai responded to questions received from players, individually noted below.

    • Takai: Since there are special mounts for the two existing tank jobs, naturally there will also be one for dark knight. It will not be a shark (laughs).
    • Minagawa: It's not likely that the display of party members' TP will be ready for the release of Heavensward. It won't be that far out before it's added. Optimization is currently being worked on, so please hold on for a bit longer.
    • Takai: We want partners from the Eternal Bond to be able to share personal housing. This is something we plan to implement at some point during Heavensward development.
    • Minagawa: We'd like to make it possible to move user data like cross-hot bar and macro settings from the Windows version to the Mac version. There will be a conversion function on the Windows version of the launcher that allows you to exchange the data.
    • Yoshida: The Dark Knight and Machinist physical bonuses are still a secret. With the European media tour coming up soon, please wait a little while longer for information on those jobs and their parameters.
    • Minagawa: In practice, it would be difficult to increase the amount of debuff icons displayed much further. We are currently looking into whether it's possible to add a configuration setting to make changes to the display priority in accordance with the player's role.
    • Yoshida: After Heavensward is released, existing level 50 content will have a Level Sync applied. For example, when level 60 adventurers participate in battles from A Realm Reborn, they will temporarily be reduced to level 50.

The next Producer Letter LIVE will be broadcast from a castle in France!

After completing the character creation of an Au Ra Xaela, the producer surprised us with information about the next live letter broadcast [[mid-May 2015 from Nantes, France]]. Yoshida and Minagawa ended with some messages to the full house of fans at the venue and viewers watching from home to close out the producer letter LIVE from Niconico Super Conference 2015.

Minagawa: The benchmark software will be release soon, and it won't be long before Heavensward is on sale. Please wait just a little while longer!

Takai: We're working hard on development to bring you Heavensward with an early summer release. You'll be able to enjoy it soon!

Yoshida: This is just the beginning of the second day of our event. Since there are other events that will follow, there will be quite a bit more new information that comes out. Today is a day committed to FFXIV - thank you very much!

Q&A session - nothing mindblowing, but some interesting remarks.

    Source: http://game.watch.impress.co.jp/docs...27_699746.html

    Chat with Yoshi-P

For this event, "challengers" were selected from the venue to ask a question to Mr. Yoshida, and the audience determined the "winner." The winners received a special T-shirt.

The "Chat with Yoshi-P" event was held several times in the past already, as a battle between Yoshida and the players. There are three rules. Once on stage, the presenter announces the subject of their question. Two minutes are allowed for the question and response from Yoshida, and they can continue back and forth. After time is up, the audience at the venue makes a determination of whether the challenger was victorious or defeated. The winners receive a T-shirt that says "I BEAT YOSHIDA." Because this was quite popular, recruitment for the event closed very quickly. A wide variety of questions were asked, summarized below.

    Glamour Prisms

If you change equipment that's shared between paladin and warrior, for example, and you glamour some equipment that's job-specific for Paladin, you won't see the glamour as Warrior. Can you make it so you can glamour separate equipment for each job?

Yoshida: It's not that we can't, but it would increase the amount of saved data required. We could do it, but I think people want us to increase the armoury chest size first. Since equipment data is saved on the server, it would increase the amount of communication.

    Low World Populations

For less populated worlds it can take 3-4 hours to recruit a party, or sometimes be impossible to make one. Do you have any plans to allow party recruitment across worlds like with Duty Finder?

Yoshida: We have no plans for this at the moment.

Wouldn't it be good if it wasn't so time consuming?

Yoshida: Party Finder is used for content that isn't in Duty Finder or for practice parties, if we added this feature to Party Finder it would basically be the same as Duty Finder.

Well, for example, you now have party recruitment on Lodestone, so what about a system where people can be matched across servers using some kind of password with Duty Finder? Like one person can be the host and others can connect to that person's group.

Yoshida: I don't know if the servers could handle concurrent connections like that with 500,000-600,000 people playing at once.

But in theory, wouldn't it be the same as Duty Finder?

Yoshida: The back end design for Duty Finder and Party Finder are different because their utilization is different. Since fewer people teaming up with Party Finder, we aren't exceeding the server capacity, and so there is some advantage to people grouping up that way. If it continues to be an issue to get groups together, we should be looking into other measures like merging worlds.

    Battlefields

I've been having fun with the variety of battles, but I do have one issue with Bahamut's coil bosses, primals, and other end-game content: almost all of the battlefields are round. Is there any reason that you haven't tried other kinds of battlefields like square ones or more linear ones?

Yoshida: It's not really intentional. Internally, the development team has a general regulation to avoid having boss areas go beyond 40 meters. The primary reason behind why we have this limit and also avoid height differences or things like the floor sliding around is that it affects job balance. For example, ranged DPS would be affected differently from others, and you might try a fight in Duty Finder and wind up with four melee DPS who have difficulty doing damage because of the the floor moving around or getting trapped in the corners of the battlefield. It's not impossible of course, but I'd like to look at more feedback on this because it could easily create situations where some jobs are favorable over others, which we'd like to avoid.

There are already a lot of round arenas, will the ones from Alexander be large circular arenas again?

Yoshida: I'd like you to see for yourself. For example, there are mechanics like the arena tilting in some of the content.

    Roegadyns

I've been using Roegadyns quite a bit. I didn't play FFXI, but I know Galka had tails. Roegadyns basically look like a man who turned into kind of a hulk. Why did you get rid of the tail?

Yoshida: Galka and Roegadyn are different races. I wasn't on the FFXIV team when the Roegadyn were designed, so I'm not sure why they decided to lose it.

Will you add them in the future?

Yoshida: I think it would be kind of odd if they suddenly grew tails without ever having them. With the understanding that Galka and Roegadyn are different races, we could still add other features as long as they make sense for Roegadyn.

Are you thinking you'll have more beastly type races in the future?

Yoshida: I'd like to see how popular different styles of Au Ra become and based on that I'll think about whether we should go in a beast-shaped kind of direction or a more natural one.

    Chocobo Companions

When you call your chocobo companion now, your application to Duty Finder gets cancelled. For a job that can spend a lot of time on Duty Finder matchmaking, like a DPS, it would be nice if they could wait for Duty Finder while having their chocobo out. Especially on smaller servers, FATEs become more difficult because there's often just one person fighting, and since you can't cure yourself as a DPS, you often can't clear them alone. Can you change the specifications so that you can continue to participate in matchmaking even after you call your companion?

Yoshida: This is a frequently asked question. Originally, we designed the chocobo companions to serve as party members. Since duty finder is cancelled when the state of the party changes, we have to change that specification. We're working on the source code now, but it's a very complicated process so it's been taking time. It's probably already too late to include in 3.0, but based on our progress, we should be able to get it implemented at some point in the 3.X series. I know you've been waiting, but this will be resolved.

    Mysterious Floating Note

At the Forgotten Springs, there's a cute Mi'qote sleeping in bed, but if you look above on top of one of the horizontal shelves, there's a floating note. Hopefully everyone gets a chance to take a look at this. Depending on the camera angle, you can't see it, so I wanted to report this.

Yoshida: Forgotten Springs changed during development. We probably removed some walls to make it more culturally appropriate for Mi'qote tribes. Since the note is probably just a simple polygon, it might have gotten missed by the camera so perhaps the person in charge forgot to remove the note when they got rid of the wall so it looks like the note is floating. On behalf of the development team, I'd like to say thank you for scouring all corners of Eorzea.

    Botany and Mining

Since I've had some time recently, I've been trying to earn money, but it's a bit annoying to have to reactivate the actions to find unspoiled nodes when I switch, sometimes I forget to press it. I think it would be good if it remained active.

Yoshida: The simple answer is that they have separate timers.

    Content

When you die during content, you get a prompt to return to the starting point. There are some people who press it very quickly and back out of the content too fast, can you make it so that it pops up in the lower right corner first, or so "wait" is an option?

Yoshida: Especially for players who are first timers to MMORPGs, they might not understand why "wait" would be an option. Because you may not always get a raise, we have it set up so the dialogue to return after death stays constantly present. I realize that people might make a mistake and accidentally return, but there are many people who would be confused so we left this in a state where it's as easy to understand as possible for beginners.

I would think it would be the opposite, though, and beginners would be more likely to return by mistake.

Yoshida: Well, that's just how we've decided to have it for now. It's really just based on a theory.

I don't know if anyone noticed this, but the trolls over at 2ch are going crazy over this number since they believe there aren't any more than 100k active players. If true, it would match up with lucky bancho's recent lodestone population census.

I'm confused a little, you mean Yoshida's numbers match the unofficial census right?

[[Does anyone remember this?]] In ways like that, the current scenario already pointed towards elements from Heavensward. (Oda)

Since there are no people from Sharlayan left, the Gubra Library of Illusions is an unmanned facility. (Maehiro)
My guess would be that the Library is the dungeon within the Isle of Vale, where the Students of Baldesion were studying something mysterious before disaster stuck and the location of the isle vanished ( During "Through the Maelstrom" Urianger mentions that it appeared that some super powerful magic on the level of Ultima or meteor was used and the isle was "Utterly gone". My guess is that rather then being destroyed, the isle floated up into the sky).

Or like CoP in how the land was completely cut off from the rest of the world (Tavanazia Archipelago.) I don't think this is one of the areas that's in the sky since it sounds like it's very much just in one of the abandoned cities on ground.

The common theory is that the magic is N-Zone/The [Interdimensional] Rift, due to it's parallels with Final Fantasy V -- The Void, Galuf & Krile, their last names being "[Bal]desion," The Isle/Castle of Val (Bal), Chocobo Forest, the Ancient Library. The Isle of Val vanishing in Final Fantasy XIV literally parallels The Castle of Bal being sucked into The Void in Final Fantasy V.

The islands will be explained in the story, but there's very little chance it will have anything to do with The Isle of Val disappearing.
