Battle of the Android phones: Samsung Galaxy S vs HTC Desire HD

I'm looking for a new phone, almost definitly gonna be one of these two unless someone can come up with some shockingly good reasons for an alternative.

If anyone has one of these, or has even tested both, I'd appreciate their insights into which should have the edge.

So far, research indicates the HTC has the edge in terms of processor performance, build quality, screen quality, OS performance, but loses out to the samsung when it comes to onboard memory (16gb is a huge difference to 1.5gb, and althogh apps can be installed on a memory card, you lose some performance. same as running a program off a drive other than your main windows install drive on a pc i'd imagine.), and battery life. Any expansions on these theories would be great.

Pure processing performance : Desire HD
Pure graphics performance : Galaxy S
General build quality : Desire HD
    Battery : Galaxy S
Onboard memory (even though the SD<>battery effect is minimal...) : Galaxy S

Personnal choice : Desire HD, I have its little brother (Desire) and I love everything about it the only real flaw being the shitty graphic controller, the Galaxy S handles much much much better 3D games, but I can still run FF7 with decent speed.

If you're going with the Galaxy S (which isn't a bad choice by any means!), wait for the Nexus S which will be Google's new flagship (copy paste of the Galaxy S)

For media consumption(movies, youtube games etc.) The SAMOLED screen on the Galaxy S is really one of its high selling point as everything you watch on it is incredibly vivid. I'm not sure if the Desire HD is an SLCD or not but I can't really imagine any other screen out there that comes close to the S in in that respect. The GS's battery life varies depending on the rom you're using and any apps you have running in the background. The camera is pretty fantastic indoors and outdoors. Best thing to do is read up on some of the tech blogs that have reviews up

Samsung's SAMOLED screen is way better.

I don't know about other Galaxy S's, but the Epic's 16gb is just a microSD. I think the others might not be a microSD, but it's not that big of a deal.

Don't really know much about HTC, but I second waiting for the Nexus S if you can.

The other Galaxy S phones have integrated 16gb, as opposed to external SD card. It does cause a problem, adding some lag since the RFS file system Samsung uses sucks. Custom kernels and mounting /data as something besides rfs fixes that.

Dont buy either. Get a droid on verizon or wait for the Nexus S, or pick up a Nexus 1.

Samsung series android phones use RFS or Remote file system which adversely affects their IO and R/W performance. The system was developed in the late 80's for Unix. It has zero buffer and is terrible.

Most of the android phones now use EXT3 or EXT4, which are quite fast and efficient.

Sorry, saying RFS file system is kind of redundant, but some people probably don't know or care what the acronym stands for. Either way, it sucks :/

Take it for what you will, noobnl is one of the biggest developers for the Epic atm, mainly thanks to him for getting recoveries and stuff working.
