Anyone know what's on the horizon for SSDs? New generation/price drops? Been wanting to purchase one for a while, but the prices just haven't come down enough to justify it.

The prices are pretty reasonable right now compared to what they used to be. You used to not be able to get a decent-sized SSD for under $400-500, today they're around $200-250 for a 128GB drive. Remember, SSDs are meant to house the operating system and applications, so you shouldn't need a large drive. Putting media on them is a waste of resources. In any case, I'm sure they'll continue dropping in price.
Well aware of that.
Most recent thing I recall seeing is that OCZ was announcing 2x nm NAND for upcoming products, which will make them cheaper. http://www.ocztechnology.com/aboutocz/press/2011/418
'course, that will also reduce the usable life of the parts - but they should still last a good long while.
The new Sandforce controller is also looking extremely promising performance-wise. http://www.anandtech.com/show/4159/o...t-sf2500-ssd/1
If you are well aware that they are for reading only and you turn off all the stupid shit windows tries to do to your OS drive (defrag, indexing, hibernate, etc) then they are worth the price to get 2x30 or 2x40 or 1x60 or 1x80 for OS/Game or 2.
Now a sticky!
Thanks!
YOU DONE DUNNIT NOW
Anyone have a particular way they like to clean their keyboards and mice? Every 2 or so months the keys start to feel overly oily and thus far I've only used a little isopropyl alcohol to wipe them down, but I'd like to start cleaning the keyboard at least in a more thorough way.
I remove keys(a small screwdriver or knife is enough) and clean inside sometimes with isopropyl.
If you can get the keys out easily, take all of them out, put them in a big bowl/bucket of soap and water. Shake it up, let them sit for a while, and that should be enough.
Sometimes I just wipe them down with a wet paper towel, rarely I use alcohol cause it just feels improper to use on the keys. I also blow it out with an air compressor once in a while. Lots of skin flakes, hair, crumbs whatever can get behind the keys. I have cats and a dog, so there is always some hair in mine.
Thanks, thanks, I was planning to take all the keys out but this Logitech Wave Pro kb is curved everywhere and making it more of a pain than expected, lol. Still, after getting the space bar out and seeing what's hiding under there, I think I have to.
edit: ugh, good lord this is pretty disgusting. seems I fucked my space bar up somehow as well.
Love the idea of this thread.
What was the program that people used to auto login to POL? I can't find it for the life of me for a project i wanted to try.
Is it possible to play FFXI on a netbook? I had a desktop that I had FFXI installed on, I assume I can just transfer all the folders via USB cable? Would FPS be the same if I were on a desktop?
Yes, but the video hardware in most netbooks is rather lacking. Comparison to a desktop is kind of hard to say, as it's a rather broad category. It'll likely run worse than the majority of desktops with anything better than integrated video...but you have a relatively low res screen to fill.
As an aside, of course, the majority of netbooks on the market are still old designs, with the focus shifting to tablets for upcoming product lines. If you haven't bought something yet, waiting until there are some decent revisions to available models would likely be smart.
In addition to copying the files, FFXI requires some registry entries and .dll registrations. You can find documentation on what to enter around the web, or just run a basic install then copy over your updated folders. The installer runs fine from a folder on the HDD if you're simply worried about not having an optical drive.
Threads like this would be alot easier to sort/skim/jump through if people bolded their questions. Just a thought.
Uh, there's a Random Suggestion Thread for that, Boyiee.
So I got a free laptop and there's some weird shit on the screen (no idea what it is). I tried using my soft cloth and cleaner on it but that didn't take it off, even with a bit of force. Is there something else I could use to maybe get it off without destroying the screen?
