    What have I missed?

So, I havent really watched a new series in.. probably 5 years.. and im looking to watch some of the better ones Ive missed. Ive been looking at those nice visual graphs (Fall2010 etc, is there one good location to find these?), but wanted to see what others have seen and enjoied.

Ive seen a lot of series in my past (http://users.livejournal.com/trixi_/123509.html), and pretty much like most all genres, however there are a few series that I do not wish to watch. Namely Bleach, TTGL, FMA, One Piece, Claymore, and P&SwG, I just couldnt get in to them.

I was looking at High School of the Dead, Angel Beats!, and Hidamari Sketch to start off.

So then, what should I watch?

The paint drying seem to be right up your alley, though I did hear good things about grass growing too.

Sarcasm aside though, 5 years is 20 seasons of anime, you gotta be a weeeeeee bit more specific on what exactly you want.

    I also hated Cowboy Bebop.

Trying to be as unspecific as possible really. I just want to know whats out there. I probably will go through all the series and youtube a trailer from them, but id like to know what anime recieved a 'omg this was awesome, im actually going to buy it' type of reception.

I do kind of like paint drying though considering some of my favorites are .hack, Key (Kanon, Clannad, etc), Ah My Goddess, Chobits, Haibane Renmei, Key The Metal Idol, Lain, Violinist of Hamelin, etc.

But I also like Elfen Lied, GitS, FMP, Kite, Excel Saga, Hajime no Ippo, Higurashi, and such.

Would be irked if I was one of those people putting the series on pedestal for being the first non-dbz anime they watch.

In any case, since you are already gonna watch Hidamari Sketch, go Madoka right after that and have your mind blown.

I honestly have no idea what to say to you if you hate OP/FMA/TTGL/Cowboy Bebop. I mean, for the most part those aren't the "love or hate" anime, those are the anime just about every single person thinks is amazing.

Only thing I can seem to figure out is you like female-dominated shows with some humor? Well that's about 75% of anime, ranging from "terrible" to "fairly good" depending mostly on the viewers taste over the last 5 years. So just pick something and watch.

  7. #7

You've got a pretty unique taste for anime there. If there was a genre you'd like to see like action/comedy/horror/scifi/whatever, then we might be able to narrow the choices down but going back to 2006 and with a pretty difficult history, it might be tough to find something we know you'd like. Your best bet maybe to try HotD, Angel Beats, and Hidamari Sketch and see how you like those.

You might like Bakemonogatari, that's a bit of supernatural/comedy/harem. Shiki, too, if you like horror. Level E might good if you want a comedy/sci fi. Otherwise, I don't think you and I have a lot of overlap.

Why post the LJ entry link if its private?

Also, no idea what to suggest since all the ones you didn't get into have almost zero relationship to each other in terms of plot, characters or even production levels. The only common thread I see is that they're all very structured in plot advancement (even bleach when you take out filler). Bebop to One Peice to P&Sw/G to TTGL just kind of makes my brain hurt trying to find a common thread.

Just going down my list, avoiding ones you wanted to avoid or have specifically mentioned watching. Also leaving out shows that are currently airing since you'll read enough about them here already.

Air, Angel Beats!, Bakemonogatari, Canaan, ChäoS;HEAd, Darker than Black (two seasons), El Cazador de la Bruja, Higashi no Eden (plus two movies), Kara no Kyoukai, Katanagatari, Last Exile, Madlax, Mai-HiME, Mai-Otome, Mai-Otome: Zwei, Mai-Otome: Sifr (all 4 Mai series in that order), Noir, Paranoia Agent, Samurai Champloo (two seasons), The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (two seasons plus movie), True Tears.

A lot of those can be found at Coalgirls. I like their releases because they focus on quality of the source material over a bunch of fancy post-processing encodes and upscales, and they're very particular about what sub releases they use on a per-title basis. Most others can be found at BakaBT or Animebyt.es. Of what I've watched recently I'd say go for Kara no Kyoukai. Animation is beautiful (Aniplex) and the music is Kajiura Yuki (nothing else needs to be said there). The story is quite interesting and actually requires some thought to keep up with it.

If you like .Hack then you should watch the newest release in the series - Quantum. I would also second most of the stuff Xanthe mentioned. Besides that... hmmm Code Geass, Soul Eater, Black Lagoon...

Oh, also Zwei is the sequel to Mai-Otome, Sifr is the prequel and is superior in every way.

You're right, I got those mixed up/neglected Sifr when going down my list. Sifr definitely had some amazing production value. I'd watch HiME > Otome > Zwei > Sifr (release order) to preserve plot reveals.

I suppose I could also add Highschool of the Dead to the list, but with an asterisk: While the story and animation are great, it has far too much fan service for my taste (I prefer little to none). Actually, fan service is probably too weak a term for HotD. Watch on your own recognizance.

Bakemonogatari looks pretty good, so does Shiki. Level E.. meh.

Darker than Black, pass, Durarara kind of iffy too, Toradora looks pretty interesting though.

Dennou Coil kind of reminds me of a Miyazaki anime, might give that a shot. I think I watched a couple of Eureka 7 eps, I dont recall liking it very much for some reason.

How horrible of me, I forgot to mention that probably one of my top 5 favorites is Last Exile, a wonderful series all around. Air, Cannon, and Noir were also great. I watched Samurai Champloo and thought it was ok, and Haruhi was kind of hit and miss for me, some of it was good, some was meh, parts of it reminded me of FCLC (which I didnt care for).
Kara no Kyoukai does look pretty good. Ill have to look in to the Mai- series, ive heard good things about them. True Tears looks like something I may enjoy. Ill have to take a better look at the others too.

Really liked Black Lagoon.. didnt like Code Geass or Soul Eater.

Ive an nonsensical taste in anime yes, and nothing that really correlates for the most part. I like heavy story driven anime, but also like mindless violent ones. Really ill watch anything that appeals to me from any genre. Ive no real reason to like or dislike a series, just that it wasnt able to keep my interest or not. Romance, comedy, action, drama, scifi, mech, sports, etcetc, I like it all, but it may be just the visual style that turns me off of a particular series, or maybe the characters attitudes, idk, could be anything.

But thanks for the suggestions, keep them coming~

Ok, totally random things then I remember I liked:
Bokurano, Umineko no naku koro ni (the anime is not as good as Higurashi, but I still liked it, I've read the VN's like crazy after though and they're really cool), Nodame Cantabile, Kuragehime, Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha, Natsume Yuujinchou, Hikaru no go (old, but god wouldn't I watch it again and again O.o), Saki (lots of fanservice and crazy stuff, but I easily get into animes where they make board game *intense* XD), Blood+.

I'm kind of curious why you shrugged of Darker than Black and Durarara so easily.

When you say you didn't get into anime like FMA or TTGL, how many episodes did you watch? But either way, you passed on so many great series that I don't know what to say.

I would read the manga instead. The anime messed up the ending completely, and they did a few thing wrong on the way as well (like airing arcs out of order)

If you like Noir, you'd probably like the other "girls with guns" shows. Maddox and El Cazador de la Bruja. House of Five leaves is pretty good.
Mushishi if you like slower stuff (it's one of the best shows ever)

Towards the Terra or Terra E is really good. Kurau Phantom Memory is very, very good. PlanetES is pretty much a must see.

Oh, also Zwei is the sequel to Mai-Otome, Sifr is the prequel and is superior in every way.
Interesting, I didn't know there was something to watch after Zwei (which I didn't dig that much, god mode all over the shop).

I really have no idea what you enjoy. so here's some sequels and random stuff.

    Trigun: Badlands Rumble (Movie)

    Hellsing Ultimate
I don't know if Hellsing in your list includes Ultimate or not. The OVA follows the manga more closely than the TV series and next volume gets release on July 27th.

    Black Lagoon Roberta's Blood Trail
5 part OVA, with final Volume being released on June 22nd.

    Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
13 part OVA the first 7 episode were done in 2001 while last 6 were released in 1993.

    Mazinkaiser SKL
this is a 3 part OVA, the story is weak but enjoyable.

    Katanagatari

    The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya*Movie*

    Shin GETTER ROBO

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha Movie 1St
I say watch the Movie and if you like what you see then watch the TV series.
