The worst part is I think they are doomed no matter what. They could release the best game ever known to man, but yet people will look back at the failure of XIV and not even give it a try. Makes me think why would they even announce this now, seems they should wait till they fix (if they ever can) XIV, to prove to the customers that they can provide quality entertainment.

They will always be doomed if they keep the current thought process. How long can they continue to make games that have outdated concepts? people want innovative gameplay in their MMO's, not endless grind, gimmicks, mini game hell.

They should just stay out of the MMO market with new titles and continue fix their biggest fuckup, I still have my doubts 14 can ever recover to start turning profits. I am just really skeptical of any new MMO's they come out with. SE has top of the line graphics art, CGI teams but really really bad everything else that stems from gameplay, internal systems of how things are built, bad UI concepts, horrible server coding techs etc. Some of the fuckups in XIV really make you wonder what is going on with the management over there, I don't know how anyone is going to treat their next MMO seriously.

And that's their fault. People dare to believe in a company that screws up often and always end up the same - crushed. Look at fucking Funcom. Same shit. SE deserves this feeling some people get in their guts when they think about taking the plunge again. That's what happens when you release a series of shitty games in rapid succession.

Obviously no company is going to knock every ball out of the park every time, but there's being a regular hitter and then there's being in a fucking slump. This has been a long, long slump, and people should be rightfully wary the next time SE comes up to the plate to hit again.

Nobody should want them to fail, but people have every right to be worried. SE shouldn't get a free pass on that. No company should.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

I wasn't arguing that, my point alone is that claiming that companies are failing because they aren't giving people what they want (fast content/fixing glitches as said in your quote) is only scratching the surface in all the problems in trying to make a successful mmo. Which I would dare say is next to impossible to do for any company at this point in time.

Umm, EVE, SWG, SWTOR, and I'm sure others.

Also, calling it now, The Bouncer: Online.
And you'll be able to make your own cutscenes for quests and missions and edit them in any way you wish.

Most MMO threads these days are devolving into these "what's wrong with the state of MMO's at the moment" rift wow xiv troll bullshit defense squad herp derp threads. I think the MMO genre is the worst thing to ever come out of the history of gaming.

And I don't think I could ever give SE pre-order money again after being burned the last few times.

I hope its not a Secret of Mana or a CT mmo, I would hate to see them ruin those as well >.>

I have ALWAYS wanted a Secret of Mana type MMO but good god, I can't see any of this ending well after FF14.

For one, there are problems not really unique to SE but japanese game developers at large (like thinking taking ideas and concepts from other developers is something to be ashamed of). They even stated this not long ago.

You don't have a slightest clue how they develop games, so that's quite an assumption you've got there. It's rarely as simple as just having poor top management in any company.

Stop letting Tanaka develop your MMO's, SE.

    What?

Example of executive meddling: Yasumi Matsuno originally wanted Basch in the role of the main character and as the focus of FFXII. From on high they changed all the materials to focus more on Vaan and Penelo. This is gleaned from the artbooks and making-of materials released when FF12 came out. They also put in the SDF-1 style superairships into the world of Ivalice, when previously the only airships in the Ivalice lore were ancient, forgotten weapons.

Example of poor executive decisionmaking: They WAY overpaid when they acquired Eidos. This is public knowledge.

Example of bad management: Wada's acknowledgment that teams working on the same games would not communicate clearly with other, resulting in products well below customer expectations (read: FFXIV and to some extent, FFXIII.)

Yes these are guesses but they are educated guesses pulled from recent headlines and reflected in the core Square Enix franchise releases. So when I say SE hasn't publicly said enough about their management changes to make me anything more than pessimistic on this new MMO announcement, I'm not just pulling it out of my ass. How about next time you want to accuse me of making shit up you post sources and facts of your own rather than 'Nuh-UH you just don't know how SE works!'

I never said the top management hasn't made any mistakes. I'm saying it's rarely if ever more than a fraction of problems that got the company in the situation it is in.

Much more importantly, the current top management has figured out the issues that plague their game development and it's not a stretch to assume is working on fixing them as we speak. The XIV management shakeup is only the tip of the iceberg (and neither game is developed like they were half a year ago, so it's not merely a cosmetic change).

Wada also stated that it'll take them until 2012-13 until the shift in their policy will start to show results. Obviously they aren't doing any major revmping for games already announced an far in development. And obviously they aren't going to announce shifts in management for games yet to be even revealed.

But even then, Wada can only do so much. It's a collaborative effort.

I think the MMO genre is the worst thing to ever come out of the history of gaming.
    Question is, what's an MMO?

When I tell someone I play WoW, that's associated with "being in front of my pc for like 10 hours in an attempt to obtain virtual swords". That's the negative stigma, the idea the gameplay behind an MMORPG is, basically, to be a time sink.

But I actually play Wow because I can battle bosses with 9 other people, because I have my role in battle and each victory feels much more epic when you simply can't "reload" each time a boss beats you down (I loved FF11 for that). That should be the point of MMOs actually, what sets them aside all offline, single player titles.
When I cleared DA2, I just turned it off and it was done. When I reach level cap in an MMO, I know my character will be there, ready for any new challenge or just to help other people I know. The feeling is completely different.

I think all of these posts highlight the real problem with introducing a new MMO to the market now. There are simply too many MMOs available. I know people who left FF11, including several BG posters in fact, to play new games that were supposed to be the "WoW/FF11 killers" and blow all the competition out of the water. AION is a good example. They all left that game and went onto Rift. And now they're talking about TERA. I'm starting to lose track of all these games.

I think we've experienced an MMO bubble. Game developers saw how much money early MMOs were raking in and just rushed to push out MMOs. Hence we end up with endless clones of WoW with nicer graphics. And now the bubble is bursting. There simply aren't enough customers to play all these games. How many of you can seriously do endgame on several different games at the same time? I know I can't handle more than one game at a time. So we're going to see cheaper and cheaper games with more gimmicks to bring in the money, which means poorly made games, until such a point when most of them will disappear and we'll be left with the decent ones.

At which point hopefully they'll upgrade FF11's graphics!

Still waiting for a Pokemon MMORPG to be honest =p

For something entirely different I would think a Grand Theft Auto MMORPG would be awesome:

2 Factions: Police and Baddies (what do you call the bad guys in general? I forget)
Police Classes > Soldier, Officer, Doctor
Baddies Classes > Prostitute, Gangster/Mafia, Trader

Or scrap the Police and make that the enemy (true to the game's origins) and make it like EvE Online. Join a gang (guild) and go have territory wars or camp around the more ghetto areas and gank people.

1 large (huge?) city, several sub cities/areas. Perma-World-PvP
No true levelling system, or perhaps a respect/ranking/rep system only
Lots more buildings are explorable (this is where it gets complicated I guess)

Just a quick 5 min thought train while waiting for this code to compile at work, haha.

Sounds a little like All Points Bulletin, though it was just another fail. They're restarting it I think though.

I'm in agreement i would hate for CT to be destroyed, but if it could be done right, holy hell would a good Chrono Trigger MMO be a fantastic way to bring the series back. That said, after the colossal flop of 14, my faith in SE doing a good job has wavered, bad.

Just bring out ffxi-2, let us transfer our characters over, and start fresh. I spent so many years building Guitarman that connection would instantly get me into their new mmo. 85 can be the new level 1, and we go from there.

I just Googled it. I guess it really wasn't popular or it didn't last.

Got me curious though, doing more studies!
