Hm interesting, maybe I just spent more time playing games than watching TV back then lol. I used to sit and watch that vanadiel live all the time while I waited for my new Dell I was getting just for the game lol.

Friendly little bump... Just to remind people DSP is still here and going. Find us at:
    https://github.com/DarkstarProject/darkstar

    What is DSP (DarkStar Project)?
DarkStar is a private server software code base for Final Fantasy XI. It is a community project 100% coded from the ground up in C/C++ (making use of MySQL and Lua scripting) from community members interested in creating an experience worth playing again. The intent of the project is to create a server that is up to and including all of the content of Chains of Promothia, back when the game was fun and enjoyable to play.

    Who is DSP?
DarkStar is an entirely community driven project. DSP is the work of over 75 contributors across 3 different life-spans of the project.
At this time currently, we have a total of 52 contributors (on the current repo) with over 6,700 commits.

    What Works On DSP?
    - Jobs that work: WAR, MNK, WHM, BLM, RDM, THF, PLD, DRK, BST, BRD, SAM, NIN, DRG, SMN, RNG (See below for more info.)
    - Quests: Various side-quests and such work. (Don't expect everything to work though.)
    - City Missions: Rank 10 of all three nations is implemented however parts break between updates to the game client as monster ids shift within the zone.
    - RoZ Missions: All missions are implemented. Some may not work 100% correctly currently due to monster id shifts.
    - CoP Missions: All missions up to and including Promy - Vahzl are implemented. Other missions are implemented at random and are not guaranteed to work currently.
    - NMs / HNMs: Pretty much all NMs are implemented that are known, as well as HNMs are working. (See below for more info.)
    - Auction house works.
    - Delivery box works.
    - Trading works.
    - Linkshells work.
    - Crafting works.
    - Fishing does not work currently. (See below for more information.)
    - Nearly all spells and abilities work.
    - Nearly all additional effects work.
    - Nearly all items work. (Up to level 75. Anything after is hit or miss.)
    - Dynamis is implemented in a manner that works, but has bugs and is not retail like. It is more like the old Dynamis system, however monsters currently do not spawn like the retail game did.

BLU, COR, PUP are all currently in the works of being implemented entirely but are not on the projects focus.

HNMs are implemented with working respawn timers, however not all of them are entirely scripted or implemented retail like. Kings such as Fafnir, Nidhogg, Behemoth and King Behemoth are all implemented and working. They should fight similar to retail and have retail-like stats. Tiamat is scripted however some of his abilities do not work fully and is not retail like entirely. Adamantoise / Aspid are not implemented properly and do not properly hide in their shell to regen etc. Other HNMs are working but not all are implemented fully.

Fishing is currently broken in DSP as it is based on the old client fishing model. However, myself and another contributor (Setzor) have been working on the fishing system and have it fully working with the new retail fishing system. It is not yet commited to the core repo ye though as we are gathering some more information for fishing locations and fish ids. However it should be added soon.

Dynamis is implemented in a fashion that worked for the project at the time it was coded. Monsters do not show spawned when you enter the zone. Instead there are NPC statues all over the zone at spawn locations for the groups of monsters where they normally would be. Hitting the statue will spawn that set of monsters. Time extensions, statues, and bosses all work as intended though still it is just a little wonky looking at first.

Does 'x' feature work on DSP?
Feel free to ask. We will try and give you as much info as possible on what does or doesn't work with the project currently. Tons of work is being done constantly on the project but at this time we have no schedule or to-do list. People work on what they want to when they want to so progress on the project is not stream-lined in any manner. Things get added, changed, fixed, etc. at random.

Some things to note before asking. Content past Chains of Promothia is not really a focus so most of it will not work. Some of the Treasures missions are implemented, along with some of the NMs / HNMs in the Treasures areas work. Assaults have been implemented but they need to be scripted. But they do work once scripted.

    DSP Needs You!
We are actively always looking for more contributors to the project. The active development team consists of 1 major developer (kjLotus) then a handful of commiters that help out from time to time (such as myself and a few others). We are in need of more core developers as well as script writers for quests and missions. However we will never decline any assistance to the project if you want to work on something else for the project instead!

DSP is coded in C/C++ for the core. We use Lua as our script engine. MySQL is the database engine we use for the major data of the game.

Some things we do ask though when you make any contributions to the project:
    • Please use Github properly. Fork the main DarkStar repo and use pull requests to contribute to the project. (It is best to create new branches for each major alteration you do!)
    • Tabs are the devil, please use 4 spaces instead of tabs!
    • Please ensure that the work you are committing is retail-like. We do not want custom content on the main project repo. The focus is to mimic retail!
    • Please test your work! Try not to commit things that you have not tested!
    • Give credit where credit is due! If you use someone elses work in something you commit, please credit that person / project.

Besides, this game has a full team of experienced employees(via schooling and working on various other games), the chance of this "project" ever getting where they want it is next to impossible. We don't even know how everything works as is. How long will someone work for free? And when the time comes, who will want to pay for a subpar server to play on? Its entirely unrealistic. I'm aware of how fun it could be, but it's a dream, and nothing more.

You need to take a look at Arducopter then. It's a complete open source millitary grade drone control software suite with everything from mission planning software to on board flight stabilization and auto pilot (yeah the guys that think you can "jam" a drone and crash it are wrong if it looses radio link it'll just keep flying it's mission and return to home by or just immediately return to home depending on how you have it set). I don't think they have support for sense and avoid yet but that's surely coming if Bruce Simpson gets his sense and avoid system on the market.

This is why it will be impossible to regulate drones, you can literally build one from scratch using repurposed commercially available hardware and open source software. Hell a smartphone has everything you need to repurpose it into a flight controler (GPS, 3 axis gyro, 3 axis accelerometer, USB port to connect to the servo control board and the screen makes field programming convenient)

DSP has come a long way over the years and is still flourishing. Its nice to see new people show up and provide contributions to the project. Atom0s laid out a great friendly bump not too long ago. So now I am adding another friendly bump
