8/3/2011: EME came out today and announced that Tera won't be seeing retail in 2011. This marks the 2nd time that BHS (supposedly) has pushed back the release date of western Tera by an entire year. Expect to see a limited alpha testing late this year (if, of course, you can believe anything said be EME now a days) with beta and release in spring. Oh, and the quoted info:

Hello TERA faithful! My name is Chris “Chager” Hager, and I’m the North American producer for TERA. I’ve got some exciting news to share today about what we’ve been up to this year so far, as well as what we’ll be doing for the rest of 2011 and 2012.

TERA has had a busy 2011, and the year's barely half over! After successful showings at CES and GDC, we unveiled the game's political system at E3, where we received several awards and even more nominations.

The big news I’ll be sharing today is our launch timing! That’s right folks, we are ramping up for a spring 2012 launch date. Our focus has always been on launching TERA when it’s ready, so you can take heart knowing that we feel we’re getting close enough to announce our launch window. Let me explain, in further detail, what we’ll be doing between now and spring 2012.

Later this year we will begin our alpha testing. For those who aren’t yet familiar with this term, alpha testing is essentially small-scale testing with people outside the company, with the goal of collecting feedback on specific game features. An alpha test has the added benefit of allowing our internal teams to practice running a game in a “live” environment, so when the beta phase starts in early 2012, TERA will be operating like a well-oiled machine.

During our alpha, we'll test PvP server settings, overall progression, quest feedback, BAM (big-ass monster) fights, our brand new platform (account management), and a lot of other things that we’ll talk about in greater detail later this year. In addition to testing new systems and Western features, we’ll also fine-tune existing systems with our players in mind. Once all of these systems are in place, it's important to us that we get user feedback prior to our beta phase.

“Wait, did you say beta in early 2012?” Why yes, yes I did. Once we complete the alpha phase, we'll incorporate that feedback into the client, polish any new content, and then start beta testing early next year. Most of y’all are familiar with betas and how they work; for us, their main purpose is to expose greater numbers of players to TERA so they can experience the incredible action combat system, group up with some friends to take down a BAM or two, and in general enjoy a slice of TERA. We’ll announce specific dates and times for our beta testing when we get a little closer, but the culmination of those beta events will be a launch for TERA in the spring of 2012!

So what does all of this mean for you? We’ll be allowing a few select players to enter our alpha test later this year, and we'll open the door even wider in early 2012 with our beta testing. For details on both of these initiatives, as well as more about the features we’ll be implementing and testing, stop by www.TERA-online.com. As we’ve been discussing the details behind the alpha plan here at En Masse this past week, the excitement has grown palpable! We feel we’re on the right path to deliver a truly epic game to our players and fans.

    Thanks!
    —Chager

Here's a transcript of our August 2011 chat event.

    ---

Welcome to our August TERA Production Chat! With us today is Senior Producer Brian Knox and Senior Community Manager Evan Berman.

Some warm-up answers before we start: TERA is coming to North America in Spring 2012 with alpha later this year and beta early next year.

To ask us a question, include "@TERAonline" and "#TERA" (without the quotations) in your tweet. Ready? Let's begin!

@olso1802: "Will you be able to craft dropped items from raids and bosses? Or just the items from plans that drop from raids/bosses?"

You will not be able to craft the EXACT same items but crafting items can be on par with some of the big drops of the game.

@Hirokiti_87: "will you fix the flightpathwhereyou can go to any region your able to visit directly instead of going through velika"

Final destination pegasus is a much requested feature around the office but it isn't critical. We hope to get to it eventually.

@BigNastey: "With the release being pushed back to Spring 2012, is there a chance that guild housing will make it to the TERA launch?"

Yes guild housing is back into the discussion for possibly making launch now. Hope to talk more about it later.

@Karantor: "Are there any other planned occupations at end-game than raiding/PvP'ing?"

We hope that our Political system will add a social end game experience on top of the PVP and PVE end game.

@Astroaboy81: "What are some of the things you will be working on for the NA/EU release?"

Look for some more transparency into what the EME production team is doing soon. Chager has some good ideas to keep ya'll more informed.

@BigNastey: "PvP is a big concern, with the recent news that Korean TERA got a 10 second decleration time now, can we expect the same?"

Our server rule sets are different than NHNs -We have PVP and PVE servers. Our PVP rule set is still being tested in our Alpha.

@Teraversity: "Due to the delay in launch, should raid content (with more than 5 players) make its way in to TERA by then?"

Yes content involving more than 5 players is one area we are looking at before launch but nothing more to say at this time.

@Silllerrrr: "During the upcoming PvP test, will all the special race abilities be included? And will Elin be playable?"

The 'pvp test' will actually take place during our Alpha testing and yes all race/class/racial abilities are playable.

@epeenery: "If you miss the Spring 2012 launch window, can we hire mercenaries to shoot you all with nerf rifles and water guns?"

    yes

@Hirokiti_87: Does the game suffer and hurt when people buy gold, wouldn't that encourage bots, farmers, and spammers?

Yes a thousand times yes. Buying gold does nothing but fund these criminals to continue to steal accounts, spam and commit fraud.

@Uruvion: Why isnt TERA at a booth at PAX? Is it because its right next door and everything is already set up in the office?

Our new release window of Spring 2012 made us decide against the flash of the show and instead have a more intimate community gathering.

@Radeeeeeee: When can we say Elin tights?

We plan on rolling it out in the Alpha test first and then to the community. Alpha is later this year so don't expect anything soon.

@Lunatitch: Aren't you afraid that there's too much time between the announcement of #Tera and release? People might lose interest

Always. We needed to make sure the game was in the best shape possible. An MMO is about the longevity of the content not just the launch.

@SystemIsGod: How many people are working on the NA version of TERA?

We have around 70 folks at EME - but we are part of the bigger family of Bluehole Studio which measures over 200.

@Plosionz: what major steps were taken to "westernize" a korean mmo such as tera? What has been proven itself to be the most difficult one?

The biggest step was actually creating a western publisher The biggest challenge is staying in each designers' ear 10,000 miles away.

@Raaaaaawwwrrr: Do you plan to divide each area to its own servers (e.g. Europe, US and KR) or a one server with different locations to link up?

En Masse will service North America. For those overseas North Americans you will still be able to connect to our servers.

@Feariousful: You've chosen TERA amongst many other Asian MMOs. So, what are your goals/objectives with this game (beside making money)?

To establish a strong publisher that offers an alternative for developers from the behemoth publishers out there. TERA is the foundation.

@SolemnOathGuild: Will guild naming have spaces? If not I'll have to change mine...

Yes we plan on allowing spaces in guild names.

@Uruvion: What is your opinion on the community's shocked reaction about the announcement of the Spring 2012 release date?

The most shocking thing was how well the community reacted. We've seen great support for taking our time & making sure the game is ready.

@ValkyonHQ: Playing as a “pick up” in #TERA will worth the trouble or it is recommended and/or necessary to have a guild or group?

We have a few tools in the works for encouraging parties. It sounds cheesy but parties in TERA are FUN. Action combat + BAM = epic win.

@Tecprincesself: will mystics have times limits on when they disappear? Hate re-summoning them during long battle.

Have you spent some time as a mystic? Classes are constantly under balance consideration. We pass along all feedback even mystics

@BigNastey: When we expect the next big news about TERA? Got anything planned soon?

SOON. We have an announcement at the PAX community event.

Alright guys I am signing off. Scapes will post a transcript! Back to testing some more TERA. Trying a warrior this time around. - BK

Thanks for joining us, TERA fans! If we didn't get to your question, post it on the TERA-Online.com forums in the transcript thread for us.

Welcome to our September TERA Production Chat! Today's guests: Producer Chris Hager, Associate Producer Stefan Ramirez, & Senior CM Scapes.

As a reminder before we get started, TERA is coming to North America in Spring 2012 with alpha later this year and beta early next year.

To ask us a question, mention "@TERAonline" and include the "#TERA" hashtag (without the quotations) in your message. Ready! Set! Tweet!

Q: @Nic_K_Thompson What do you expect to happen if someone or a group of people mass purchase ChronoScrolls to flood the market?

A: To preempt this, we will be setting a limit to the number of chronoscrolls that accounts can buy for a given period of time.

Q: @olso1802 With talk of no end game in K TERA, will the focus of EME still be on 5 man's, or are there large raids planned for NA launch?

A: We are making sure that TERA will have a compelling endgame for its North American launch. (1/2)

A: This includes adding new content and updating existing content. (2/2)

Q: @MandyMassie Have the internal Alpha tests begun? How are they going? Can we expect a public Alpha later this year?

A: We've been internally playing on the alpha server for several weeks now and are gearing up to support an external alpha soon (this year).

Q: @happymonkeyrain Are you considering fundamental changes to the PvP system (on the PvP servers) from the Korean format?

A: Yes, we'll be testing PvP server settings during our alpha later this year.

Q: @Uruvion How many chronocrolls can we have at any given time? Is there a limit?

A: No specifics yet, but we'll be fine-tuning the chronoscroll limits per account closer to launch.

Q: @Pironig Why can't you launch TERA now and then make patches that gamers will download?

A: We don't feel that TERA is ready for the North American market yet. We want to release a complete game from day one.

Q: @Astroboy81 Is there a possibility for updates to be communicated about TERA more efficiently and more often?

A: We're working on more regular updates to the community as well as more regular interaction on the forums and with fans.

Q: @BigNastey Will members of the community be invited to the Alpha testing, or will it be done internally?

A: The alpha test will involve internal employees, friends and family, and external testers.

Q: @Menorel It is the last TERA Production Chat? Will you plan any further twitter chat with the community on twitter?

A: This isn't the last TERA Production Chat! We'll publish the schedule for future Twitter events after this one. (1/2)

A: Plus, Senior Community Manager Scapes is always checking Twitter for TERA mentions! (2/2)

Q: @MrX1001 How do u plan to make pvp balanced and any possible of tring to make TERA an Esport like SC2 or SF4

A: MMOs are living entities, balance is an ongoing process, especially in PvP.

Q: @BigNastey Is the big focus now on end game content? Making sure that all the players have something to do once they hit the cap?

A: In-game content is one of a few areas we're focusing on prior to launch.

Q: @Uruvion With the adjustments to warriors will they be able to stand along side other damage dealing classes?

A: Warriors will be able to deal out more damage but their primary role will continue to be evasion tanking.

Q: @happymonkeyrain Can you discuss what fundamental changes to TERA PvP you are considering?

A: Everything is on the table from countdown timers to consumables used to allow PvP to PvP flagging.

Q: @iheartelins Will TERA be a grindffest till your character reaches cap level?

A: One of the ways we're adjusting the game is to make the character progression smooth. (1/2)

A: We want players to enjoy the game, not stare at their experience bar! (2/2)

Q: @happymonkeyrain EM iterated a PvE focus, but end-game seems 2 revolve about PvP (politics, Xserver). Is end-game PvP or PvE focused?

A: Endgame will be a combination of PvE and PvP content, we are making sure there's something for all play styles at endgame.

Q: @TeraHispano do you think Crisp Thinking technology will be enough for TERA at launch?

A: The Crisp platform is one of many ways we are making sure that TERA is a safe environment for our players at launch.

Q: @ReinteL be able to play this game for South America?

A: TERA's North American servers will not have IP restrictions based on geographical location.

Q: @Astroaboy81 if a player happens to play on a PVP server, do they have any protections against being ganked?

A: We're still working on the PvP server ruleset but if you're playing on a PvP server, you should expect to PvP!

Q: @happymonkeyrain Have you decided on a collectors edition? and what it might include?

A: Plans are in motion regarding Collector's Edition pack-ins but nothing we're ready to share just yet.

Q: @iheartelins What hardware will I need to run TERA

A: Any gaming computer built within the past few years should be able to run TERA. Final system requirements prior to the start of beta.

Q: @TeraHispano What are you going to do to prevent the griefing from a Vanarch/Exarch?

A: This is where the players of TERA can rise up against an evil ruler and vote someone else into office!

Q: @BigNastey Are there any plans for in-game holiday events in TERA such as Halloween?

A: Yes, we will have large-scale in-game events in TERA.

Q: @AaronWatkins2 Can you explain the incentives to having a guild? What perks can be unlocked in owning a guild in TERA?

A: In addition to granting access to our political system, we will have a full-featured guild system including guild quests and more.

Q: @Astroaboy81 How do you plan on catering to solo players in TERA?

A: We're making sure solo players will be able to go through the storyline of TERA and level up to max level without grouping if wanted.

Q: @BigNastey Will there be a presence of GameMasters 24/7?

A: Yes, TERA will have 24/7 customer support.

Q: @happymonkeyrain Account management system will be tested with next alpha. Does that mean we'll get a new website with next alpha?

A: The new AMS will be tested during alpha but we won't be relaunching TERA-Online.com during alpha.

Q: @DougROT Could we possibly see the ability to join more then one guild in TERA?

A: No, a single character can only be in a single guild.

Q: @happymonkeyrain Will we be able to listen to different languages? Korean speech/English subtitles with NA/EU client?

A: TERA's North American client will only support English.

Q: @TeraHispano Will Vanarchs be able to add guard NPCs on its cities becoming them something like a fortress?

A: No, the vanarch's main priority is running the infrastructure of a province, not its defense.

We're coming up on the end of today's TERA Production Chat!

Q: @TeraHispano Will there be special places to be teleported via Vanarch NPC teleporters?

A: Vanarchs can activate teleporters in new locations within their province. (1/2)

A: If they turn on NPC item shops, players can buy special teleport scrolls.

Q: @happymonkeyrain Did you decide to ax the jail system?

A: The jailing system is not currently in the game, we haven't found a way to make it balanced for all parties.

Q: @BigNastey Will there be a stat swap feature for gear at launch? I want to be powerful, but still look stylish slaying monsters/players.

A: The feature to swap armor visuals from one item to another is already in-game and will be available at launch.

Q: @Astroaboy81 Will you be having anymore contests for the NA/EU population before launch?

A: Yes! We will have more contests for the TERA community before launch (and after too)!

Q: @Uruvion Is Enmasse planning more in-house meetings with fans in the future?

A: We had a great time meeting TERA fans during the En Masse Entertainment Open House! As for future events, we shall see. Dot dot dot.

Q: @happymonkeyrain Could a guild nominate someone other than the guild leader to be Vanarch? For example, nominate a guild officer?

A: No, only the guild leader can be nominated to be vanarch of a province.

Q: @happymonkeyrain Can a guild have more than one guild leader?

A: Nope, just one guild leader per guild.

Q: @BigNastey Can we expect trailers for every class like you did for the Healer? That would be sweet.

A: Actually, that video was our Gamescom trailer, not a class trailer!

And that's the hour! Thanks for joining us for this month's chat!

So basically Warriors will continue to be the dragoons of Tera unless they actually begin to listen to their customer base.

I thought the campaign system and story quests were a nice addition as well as the party element. This is definitely not a grindy MMO, at least I don't consider a MMO that can get to max level in 2-3 weeks a grindy MMO by most standards. Especially considering how grindy FFXI was at NA release.

If these dumb asses keep asking these questions over and over, and keep crying the way they do now, the game will be 1-60 in 2 weeks upon launch, then an overload of end-game raids and BGs, and everyone will quit within their first 30 days.

Why god why @ the release date >_<

Oh well, hopefully GW2 will be out by then and I can play that in the meantime instead of playing WoW.

No, nothing yet. The game is made from a modified Unreal 3 graphic engine. Has a variety of graphic options to choose from.

That's a stretch. More like "If you can run XI on high settings, you can run TERA on low/mid".
