The Evil Dead remake from director Fede Alvarez is looking for a new leading lady. Lily Collins (Mirror, Mirror) has been forced to drop out of the film due to scheduling conflicts.
Jeff Sneider from Variety (via /Film) tweeted the following:

“Again, in case you missed it, LILY COLLINS is OUT of THE EVIL DEAD reboot due to a scheduling issue. Agents, start your engines…”

Collins was reportedly set to play "the new Ash" in the films, a role made famous by Bruce Campbell in Sam Raimi's originals. Alvarez and team will have plenty of time to find a suitable (if not better) replacement in time for the scheduled April 12, 2013 release. The script was co-written by Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues. Diablo Cody (Juno, Young Adult) did a rewrite.

Jane Levy, the star of ABC's sitcom Suburgatory, has been officially cast in the lead female role of the Sam Raimi-produced and Fede Alvarez-directed remake of The Evil Dead. She will replace Lily Collins who was previously cast in the role but ended up dropping out. I personally think Levy is a great choice. She's not a very well-known actress, but I've enjoyed watching her on the series that she stars in.

The story follows five friends (David, Natalie, Eric, Olivia, and Mia) who hole up at a remote cabin where they discover a Book of the Dead. A demonic force is unleashed, possessing each until only one is left to fight for survival. Other information on the film reveals that the lead character takes his younger sister to the family's cabin to help her kick her drug addiction. Without her drugs she becomes insane and difficult to control, which makes it impossible to see that she's actually possessed.

According to a previous report David is a mechanic and is engaged to Natalie. Mia is the sister heading to the cabin to detox; Olivia is her best friend/nurse. Eric, presumably, is the kid who unleashes the demons.

Levy is playing Mia, who is basically the female Ash character in this remake.

Shiloh Fernandez (Red Riding Hood) is set to star in Sam Raimi's Evil Dead remake, which is being directed by Fede Alvarez. He will take on the male lead in the film.

I'm not really familiar with anything Fernandez has done, as I haven't watched Red Riding Hood, and I don't really plan to. He's also been cast in another movie called Deep Powder for Killer films.

This is going to piss off so many people including me, Evil Dead isn't just some run-of the mill movie, it has a massive cult following still to this day. The movie is a bonafide classic, Bruce Campbell made this fucking movie what it was.

At this point I'll assume he was hired solely based off his hair and head shot, and that they won't be going for any of the original vibe. Watched about thirty mins of rrh don't even remember this guy, nothing but typical bland remake, expecting nothing worthy out of ED.

Will probably be hearing some press lines from Sam about "wanting to share with a whole new generation."

Director Fede Alvarez is gearing up to start shooting the blood filled horror remake of Sam Raimi's The Evil Dead. This time around it's going to be more heavy on the horror and light with the comedy. Suburgatory's Jane Levy was recently cast as the main character in the film, and she gave a little statement to The Insider about how she feels about the movie saying,

I'm so excited, I'm a big fan of the original. To me it's the scariest movie, ever. But this one is really different. They've changed it a lot, but it's still a pretty gory movie. My mom probably can't see it. As for the tone, I think the humor in the first one came from the special effects of the time. I don't know that they meant it to be funny...this one is not funny. It's definitely dark.

Now, this is how Raimi originally envisioned his Evil Dead film, a dark gory horror film. That's the kind of film they set out to make in 1981, but it ended up being a great horror comedy because of the restraints they had. When this new Evil Dead movie was first being discussed Raimi said he wanted to do it so that he could show his original vision for the movie. The news outlet also talked to Bruce Campbell, who's a producer on the movie, and he says,

You can expect to have a damn scary horror movie. There's no Ash character -- The Evil Book is going to torment a new set of kids, so it's a remake, or a re-imagining or ... a re-whatever word you want to use. It's going to be re-scary.

He goes on to talk about the crazy evil trees from the original film. You know, the ones that tore up the character Cheryl. Well, Campbell laughingly says that they will be back, and that "they're not terribly well-behaved this time either."

Bruce Campbell has been bigging it up on his Twitter feed and says he's very involved in the remake with Sam. I think it will be worth a watch.

I would still like the comedy/horror mix. I actually kinda like what Rami did with Drag me to Hell. But I guess I dont think there's an actor out there that could pull of what Campbell did. Ryan Reynolds comes to mind for me maybe.

Jessica Lucas (Cloverfield, CW’s Melrose Place) and newcomer Elizabeth Blackmore are set to join the horror remake being directed by Fede Alvarez. The story will follow "five friends hole up in a cabin in a woods as one of them tries to undergo a drug withdrawal. Unfortunately, they discover a Book of the Dead and unleash demons."

Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, and Lou Taylor Pucci have already been cast in the film. Lucas would play "the role of the best friend of the girl going through withdrawal (Levy) who is also a nurse. Blackmore is playing the fiancée of Fernandez and new to the group." Filming is slated to start in New Zealand this April. Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert, and Bruce Campbell will produce through Raimi's Ghost House Pictures banner.
