Marvel is taking their sweet time getting Doctor Strange to the big screen. They've been working on the project off and on for awhile, but there's finally more movement to report! The studio is currently meeting with directors to possibly develop the project, and thanks to THR we know four of the directors who are in contention.

They're currently looking at Mark Andrews, who co-wrote and co-directed Pixar's Brave; Nikolaj Arcel, who wrote and directed 2013s best foreign film Oscar-nominated entry A Royal Affair; Dean Israelite, the director of Paramount's upcoming time-travel movie Welcome to Yesterday; and Jonathan Levine, the director of the Zombie rom-com Warm Bodies.

There is also Jon Aibel and Glenn Berger, who could be writing another screenplay for the movie. They are the writers behind the Kung Fu Panda movies. The report says that the studio is looking to hire both a writer and a director to work in tandem, or a filmmaker who can do both tasks.

Out of the four directors presented here, my favorite choice is Levine. The guy is a solid filmmaker, and I think he could do a great job with bringing the character to the big screen. He knows how to develop solid characters and tell good stories. Levine also directed The Wackness and 50/50.

Mads Mikkelsen rumored to be up for a role

Seeing Arcel’s name on the list made the most impact here because it really lit up a different story that I’ve been hearing. According to one pretty solid Marvel-adjacent source, Arcel’s Royal Affair star Mads Mikkelsen apparently is, or has been, somewhere in the mix for the film’s early casting discussions.

I’m still trying to find another source on that, or to clarify which part it would be, and whether or not Mikkelsen might have already passed or been passed over. And there were other names mentioned at the same time, that I’m also still investigating…

It doesn’t necessarily follow that Arcel would bring Mikkelsen or Mikkelsen bring Arcel, of course. We could just as easily see the actor on board with Levine, or Israelite.

I’m also particularly intrigued by the inclusion of Mark Andrews on this list. For a while at least he was developing an original sci-fi film at Pixar and, if he does take on Strange, any development on that would have to go on hold or stop outright. Not to say it already hasn’t, which is a real possibility if he’s out there looking for other gigs.

There’s a new script for Strange in the works right now with Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger said to be “in the mix” to take a seat at the keyboard. They’re probably best known for their work on the Kung Fu Panda* films, including the upcoming part 3, but they’ve also written on the second Spongebob Squarepants movie and a Monster Trucks toon.

After filling the Ant-Man director’s chair vacated last month by Edgar Wright, Marvel Studios has zeroed in on Sinister helmer Scott Derrickson to direct Doctor Strange. “My next movie will be STRANGE,” Derrickson tweeted Tuesday afternoon. Stan Lee and Steve Ditko created the character in 1963 as a neurosurgeon who serves as the Sorcerer Supreme protecting Earth against magical and mystical threats with powers of sorcery, mysticism, and martial arts. Marvel’s Kevin Feige is producing the big-screen outing about the Silver Age Marvel superhero and Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Alan Fine, Lee, and Stephen Broussard are exec producing.

Derrickson made his feature writing and directing debut with the 2005 horror flick The Exorcism Of Emily Rose and followed with his first major studio gig, 2008′s The Day The Earth Stood Still for Fox. The Keanu Reeves starrer was a critical disappointment. Four years later, Derrickson returned with smaller-scale genre pic Sinister, which he co-wrote with C. Robert Cargill, produced, and directed on a $3M shooting budget for microbudget maven Jason Blum. Sinister became an $87M box office hit for Blumhouse Productions and Summit. Derrickson’s next, the Jerry Bruckheimer/Screen Gems exorcism horror Deliver Us From Evil, opens July 2. He’s also set to write and produce Sinister 2. The helmer is repped by WME, Brillstein Entertainment Partners and attorneys P.J. Shapiro and Matt Johnson.

From what I recall reading, Sphait's draft of the script was way better until; surprise surprise, Damon Lindeloff got his hands on it. Though The Darkest Hour was shit. So who knows.
