Watching the wtf!? moments of the second movie are justifiable enough to watch it on it's own. It'll be awesome in 10 years when I can watch the whole thing from first to last.

Thing like this make me warm inside, it was the right thing to do. I just wish I had seen the movie first just to see if I would have picked that up.

Also, I love how similar Xeno and Evangelion are. A lot of concept might have influenced Xenogears back then, but Xenosaga beat Evangelion to the punch with this time loop!

Yes.
and how different they are is not relevant as you should watch Rebuild regardless.

Film 1 is basically a summary of the first few episodes but they change the way the angels look and that changes how some of the fights go and some minor details here and there are changed but nothing big.

Film 2 starts off as just a continuation of a summary of the original, but then starts to make extremely different changes go so far as to even have new character.

Film 3 is apparently supposed to have almost nothing in common with the original.

That chart is great. I did wonder about the similarities but I didn't think too deeply about it. While the ending of 2.0 made it clear it was a continuation as well as a reboot, the other hints are still prominent.
