Netflix, which ran into trouble a few years ago when it raised prices for its video streaming service, is going to try again.

The company announced today that it plans to raise prices for new customers sometime this spring from $8 a month to $9 or $10 a month.

Eventually, the company’s existing members will be asked to pay more as well, CEO Reed Hastings said in a letter to shareholders.

“Our current view is to do a one or two dollar increase, depending on the country, later this quarter for new members only. Existing members would stay at current pricing (e.g. $7.99 in the U.S.) for a generous time period. These changes will enable us to acquire more content and deliver an even better streaming experience.”

Netflix has been signaling that it would change its pricing structure for some time. Last year it started introducing a $12 “family plan” that let subscribers watch up to four different streams at a time.

And late last year the company began experimenting with other pricing tiers. In January, the company raised pricing for new members in Ireland by a pound a month, while promising to keep existing subscribers’ pricing for two years.

The move comes nearly three years after Hastings bungled a price hike designed to move subscribers away from DVD rentals. Subscribers railed against the move and at Netflix’s clumsy attempts to explain it. That led to a decline in customer numbers and a dramatic drop in the company’s stock price.

Wall Street seems to be just fine with today’s news — along with news that Netflix’s Q1 numbers came in right around expectations. Shares are up seven percent in aftermarket trading.

Hastings also used his shareholder letter to officially come out against Comcast’s proposed merger with Time Warner Cable.

In February, Netflix agreed to pay Comcast in order to ensure its video reached Comcast’s broadband subscribers. But in March, Hastings announced that he really didn’t want to do that deal, because he thought it violated the spirit of “net neutrality” principles.

If Comcast gets even bigger, companies like Netflix will find themselves cutting more of those deals, Hastings said.

“Comcast is already dominant enough to be able to capture unprecedented fees from transit providers and services such as Netflix. The combined company would possess even more anti-competitive leverage to charge arbitrary interconnection tolls for access to their customers. For this reason, Netflix opposes this merger.”

Arrested Development creator, Mitch Hurwitz, developing a new show for Netflix

When Netflix resurrected fan-favorite comedy Arrested Development after years of clamoring, the streaming service essentially made a bold statement that it was making original programming a priority going forward. The continued success of Netflix original series like House of Cards and Orange Is the New Black is a testament to that, as was the announcement that Netflix has several Marvel productions in the works starting in 2015.

The question of exactly when fans can expect Netflix and series creator Mitch Hurwitz to re-team for Arrested Development season 5 (or that much-talked-about movie) remains unanswered, but now we have some idea of what the man behind the Bluth clan’s irreverent saga will be up to next.

According to Deadline, Hurwitz has just signed a multi-year deal to create and produce new original series for Netflix. In addition, he will serve as executive producer and help other creators develop their shows as well as consult on Netflix original comedies. The contract, however, reportedly does not include any new Arrested Development content.

From a business standpoint, it makes sense for Netflix to do their best to keep Hurwitz happy and in-house. After all, the streaming service already has hit original dramas under its belt, but the relaunch of Arrested Development has certainly been its biggest comedy project thus far. Essentially, Netflix’s deal with Hurwitz appears to be akin to Marvel’s Phase Two contract with Joss Whedon, wherein the company in question recognizes the creative talent behind a success and locks him down long-term.

The logic here is clearly that Hurwitz will bring the same sharp wit and narrative flair to other Netflix series as he has with his signature show. Furthermore, the marquee value of “from the creator of Arrested Development” could help entice viewers to add the new show to their Netflix queue. Hurwitz certainly has the fervent fanbase to warrant such faith, but whereas Marvel fans would have seen The Avengers: Age of Ultron with or without Whedon’s involvement, it’s undetermined if viewers will watch (and, more importantly, stick with) a series simply because Hurwitz is involved.

The success of Netflix’s upcoming comedies will really depend on a number of factors, but bringing in Hurwitz is an encouraging sign at this point, especially if his reported collaboration with Community‘s Dan Harmon ends up being part of the Netflix deal. At the very least, it bodes well for Arrested Development‘s future on Netflix.

anyone else having netflix problems since yesterday? Yesterday I couldn't connect at all until I changed my dns servers over to google, then once i did that i could connect to the main site but every time i tried to stream something it would say either unknown error or error 2103, problem with silverlight, reinstall. I did that about 3 times between last night and this morning. The only way I've found to fix the problem is to install chrome. Netflix works fine on chrome, but since yesterday is broke as fuck on firefox, even after updating it.

apparently there is a microsoft fixit. guess what it does. reinstalls silverlight and then tells you that silverlight may have been corrupt, and that its fixed now. same problem.

I never really understood why people opt for netflix. Why not just pay $12 a month for a filehoster service such as uploaded/netload and download any movie/series at 1080p bluray for superior quality and not having to wait for stuff. It's different than torrenting and far safer.

I always found the quality of the video on netflix to be really subpar(720p I believe?) compared to a 1080p mkv in high bitrate/DTS 5.1 audio which are what most movies/shows are released on in newsgroups.
