Up to you, if you go early you can meet people/do whatever in vegas, but it's obviously more hotel fees and extra days to take off work/other parts of your daily life. You don't really have to get there several days ahead of time, just don't get there on the first day as the pools usually starts fairly early. This year games started 8am. If you're playing early (and you'll be able to check pool assignments a couple weeks before it starts), you probably don't want to get there like 2am the previous day just to end up playing your first game tired/nervous as fuck.
You should drive if you can and live within a reasonable distance or just don't mind making the trip. It's extra time, but will save you a lot of money, especially with the date they have it booked for this year.
