Ars Technica Writes About TERA IP Block

Hello! So I'm an NA living in Japan. I pre-ordered the game, but found out afterwards that I wasn't able to download it because my IP is blocked. I got set up with the VPN client Astrill, and was successfully able to download and install the files (yay!); however, no I can't make it in past the log in screen. I enter my e-mail and password, and get a windows error pop up that says "TERA has stopped working" and the following error coding:

IP shouldnt be blocked, that's the point of the VPN client isn't it? My IP should be looking like it's coming from Canada, and I was able to download the files just fine.

Blah. I during beta/open beta all I have to do was use my vpn to log in and once I was logged in I could exit the vpn and just play the game. Now when I try that if I try to close the vpn the game boots me after logging in. I used flyvpn trail to successfully get in and play. I refuse to pay extra money to play because En Masse wants to be a bag of asshole.

Yes, I noticed too that the game crashes back to the laucher if I try to turn of my VPN.

But seriously. VPN is cheap as shit. If a couple of bucks a month makes the difference, well, lol.

I paid $69.99 for a year of service with my VPN this year, and it's really not all that bad. Sure my ping is pretty large, but since I can connect to a server in Chicago where the game servers are, it's as low as I'll probably ever get. I can also use the VPN for things like FFXI (if I ever go back to that train wreck again), Hulu, or region blocked videos on YouTube. I'm NA in Korea, and it's pretty lulz that they would region block the very country that made the game in the first place...
