Why do you play?

Serious question, not trolling. Why do you play FFXIV?

I started playing upon launch and liked it at first but the menu lag and a lot of the bad systems such as repairing gear really got to me and along with quite a few others went back to different games. For those of you who stayed behind, what kept you interested?

I hear people joke about it on occasion but I want to know is it as bad as people make it out to be or has the year+ the game has been out really given the time for this game to actually improve and prosper and is now just tarnished by initial bad reviews?

I really liked the mystery-esque feeling FFXI had where people were not sure what to do and that in turn caused a bigger community focus where people would share info together to find out how to kill PW back in the day. I was wondering if that aspect carried over into FFXIV and how the overall game is and for those playing it what motivates you to play this vs the other MMO's out right now.

#1 For my guild.

I detest so many aspects of the game, but the friendships and the bonds I have with my guild mates keep me playing the game. I still log on at least four weeknights for raids and sometimes on the weekends, but no matter what I am always on TS talking with my guildies about how we're gonna approach this or that, talking about other games, or rl stuff.

#2 Leading.

Right now life is pretty stagnant for me. Just finished my master's and running the guild gives me something to do in my free time while I look for work. I always have a good time running events and feeling like a part of something fun, and that's a big part of gaming for me. I did a lot of leading in FFXI and I feel like I have a knack for it so I've stuck with it through the years and guilds I run have always had successes.

Those are my big two--one for everyone else and one for me.

I don't even know anymore. Boring as it may be, it's more fun than household chores and shit, so uh, it's my way of procrastinating.

My linkshell fills my social void and the game itself gives me a false sense of accomplishment.

Why don't I play a better MMO? I don't know.

I don't really know either. I wanted to be all pimped out for 2.0, but lately I've been not caring. Only have one friend I still play with, but our times don't mesh well right now. Took a week off to play 13-2 and think I lost whatever drive I still had to play 14... already subbed for the month so I'll check out the jobs, but if it's still boring I'm gonna unsub.

I dont like any other MMO out there, I wont like Guild Wars, so my only hope is they fix XIV.

Pretty much what Cichy said. I didn't dig much else that's out there. So, if this doesn't turn around, I probably won't be MMO'ing much at all.

However, I actually have faith in Yoshi-P's direction and I obviously would like to be ahead of the pack somewhat come 2.0/PS3 release.

I think battle system got much better so all upper hand things aside I do enjoy occasional exp party, ifrit, moogle, or just going mining while I watch a movie. I have faith that Yoshi will give us a major content injection in 1.21 that will keep me entertained for few weeks. The game isnt ready for those that want to play 8 hours a day but it made significant progress.

I play because I like the atmosphere, the cutscenes and special effects are really well done, and it bought back group xping. I'm currently playing to get an upper-hand when 2.0 comes out, pretty much like Draylo said. I want to try and make a bit of decent money, and level up those disciples of hand and land. I really don't think the game is terrible, and I can put in 30-60 minutes and actually get something done. I mean fuck, all they can do is go up from here right?

Also, I'm super duper pumped about 2.0, hopefully they get to the point where they can replace XI.

Mostly because it seems like they are slowly dropping support for XI. They haven't announced any new add-ons or expansions, and so far they're circle-jerking with Voidwatch which looks like its complete shit. I can't really say anything about the Last Stand they let loose on the test server, but other than that there hasn't been much to look forward to in XI for the last year or so.

I really hope they decide to port XI to the PS Vita and possibly even do an expansion or add on, but it doesn't seem likely. As much as it pains me to do so, i'm going to put all my money down on XIV and hope it'll be able to scratch that itch in the future.

I was playing up until it went pay mainly to lv, craft and make money because those things you will need to do eventually so best to get it out of the way now to enjoy content later.

I don't wanna hear a new instance come out for lv 50s if I don't have a lv 50 to do it so I don't wanna waste time lving while everyone is enjoying the new contents.

And also I have a semi active LS that usually has enough people to do raids with maybe a shout or a f-list tell to 1 or 2 others for a full pt.

I'm 90% sure I'm gonna sub again once job patch 1.21 is released and server merge happens. I didn't wanna support SE til they put new content out.

My friends and my LS, mostly. I don't mind the game really, though a lot of aspects annoy me. I could take or leave the game itself, but I still have fun logging on and doing stuff with people, even if it's just Moogle #214 because someone's not 7/7 yet, or just grinding Caravans together all night, or whatever. I think the fact that the game itself is kind of bland actually drives the people who do play together to become better friends, because the game on its own is just kind of dull at this point.

The other reason is because quite frankly, it's fascinating to watch the game transform. I've been playing since launch, and the changes that have taken place and continue to take place are interesting. I can't say I've liked them all, but I think it's more fun to see the entire "evolution" of the game than it would be to just stop until 2.0. Also, I do want to play through these grand limited time world events they're promising us, and I'm hoping they amount to more than camping a purple Aetheryte for hours.

The menu lag is mostly gone, the wards have search, HQ shows in search results now, combat feels much smoother, stats have some impact on battle (where at launch they were pretty much moot) maybe going naked vs optimal in a boss fight gives you a 10-20% swing in DPS (still needs adjusting), combo system is engaging (ex: vorpal thrust back > impulse drive side > chaos thrust back) forces you to move around in battle, the boss + NM fights are entertaining the only issue is there is not enough content for the hard core player if you play 4-5hours a week then there is lots to do, if you try to play daily the fights and events are so quick + travel is near instant I tend to get bored fast.

Materia system is fun, lots of customization options, needs materia on all gear not just crafted gear, a TON of content is useless since we can't add materia to the Untradable gear.
