II/III after wasting a few hours grinding through I with neither an enjoyable plot nor an enjoyable battle system, I didn't even check out its NES compatriots.
IV wasn't engaging or fun, so I can't really rate it because I barely played it.
V was awesome. Fuck plots, we have a job system!
VI was pretty great for SNES, but I feel the translation was likely terrible and the game would have been even better if it had a good translation (Kafka coming off as evil instead of funny, etc.)
VII was okay, but I could never bring myself to care about Aeris or (honestly) the plot in general. It was still enjoyable enough though. I liked Red XIII's story best.
VIII had an annoying draw system and Squall was an emo kid. Other than that, I liked it.
IX was fine until half way through the game when the plot totally changed because they realized they would only make it to disk 2 saving the princess.
X was a soap opera and it was way too easy to become ridiculously powerful. I hated this game more than any other FF.
XI was trash. Never play it.
XII wasn't very engaging for me, but perhaps I've gotten too old for the "Surprise, you're saving the world!" plot twist.
    XIII/X-II/whatever - Did not play

    Random other games:
Suikoden III - Play I and II first if you want, but it works fine by itself too. Forget that they made IV, V, and Tactics and don't taint your impression of III.
Bahamut's Lagoon - Get it emulated, which is the only way you can play it because it was never translated. Dejap translation group, I think.
Kingdom Hearts - It was so much cooler than I thought it would be when reading about it. II is super-easy-mode, but I is balanced pretty well. I sense the spirit of Tanaka.
Star Ocean 1/2 - Both good and pretty fun to play. 3 had better graphics (it was on PS2), but was a worse game in my opinion.
Grandia II - NA translation is pretty funny. Gameplay/etc... not so much maybe. Still funny.
Disgaea - Great game. I never played any related sequels though.
Necropost but you forgot FFT?! Blasphemy, even though Tactics Ogre is superior to it.

Also, XII was one of the few FFs where you didn't exactly save the world. All you really did was stop a politician from starting a continental war based on the doctrines of a previous monarch whilst wresting power away from the gods in a Promethean fashion.

I laughed a little when i got to his X Review, how he hated 10 more than any other FF but it seems like he hated pretty much every single Final Fantasy, Except maybe 7 and 8. and his complaint for 8 was cloud is emo. (Impartial =?= Emo).

Not that i mock Byrth's choices, only found it slightly funny.

I also managed to enjoy Tactics Advance I/II... The Crystal Chronicle games for the DS were really fun with friends too, to me anyway... I enjoyed the crap out of them playing them with my brothers.

    Okay.

I actually liked 5, 6, 7, 8, and most of 9 even though in retrospect 9's plot was pretty incoherent. The series in general is still incredibly overhyped though. It suffers from poor plot design, bad writing, and worse translations. There are better options out there, and if we have any luck at all there will be RPGs to come that make the SNES/PS1 FFs look as bad as the NES FFs. Judging by 12/13, I doubt those RPGs will be coming from SE and wearing the FF brand.

I'm personally way more a fan of Tales games... They aren't winning any awards for originality, But, shockingly, I play RPG's a lot more for the gameplay/playability than story. Story is important, but if the game is unplayable due to just over-all crappy gameplay, it ruins it much quicker for me, than say, not having a revolutionary story or an original story.

Final Fantasy is a big series but I agree it may be a little over-hyped. I still enjoyed half of them. Can safely say Tactics Advanced 1/2 were some fun, the Crystal Chronicle games were nice if you had friends... the gamecube one still makes me cringe on how stupid it was to play co-op with it, but despite its gimmick i had a blast playing it with my brothers. The DS ones are excellent. I like the Magic-Stacking in that game.

I kinda liked 8's draw system, Though it was tedious... almost all RPGs have some form of grinding in them, At least in FF8 your enemies levels were around your own, so leveling up wasn't a necessary grind, and Drawing took its place :X?

Drawing was annoying if you had any mild form of OCD which meant you wanted to keep your junctioned magics at 99 all the time.

I always found most magic pretty worthless compared to physical, so never had any problems not casting it. O_O

That was the last boss right? I seriously think they where trying to out do Chrono Cross's 11th hour WTF. A lot of Final Fantasy did this though. FF5 and FFX come to mind. Hell, FFXI did it with RoTZ.

If you missed it, the point was that Cloud was from FFVII and Squall is FFVIII. I agree that magic in FFVIII was pretty useless, though. I definitely never used it for damage, but I forget if I used it otherwise.

I like when RPGs have good gameplay, but an RPG with a shitty story and good gameplay is a lot like a well-written book that I don't want to read. There's a reason I play RPGs, and it's not because I like terrible characters and porno-quality dialogue/plot development.

Man he looks haggard. I can't decide if he has little girls or little boys hidden in his trunk.

Yeah, if you slapped a pit stained wife beater and a pair of basketball shorts on him, that pic would definitely scream meth addict.

Not like they wore off if the char didn't perform an action, and none of them (ok maybe eiko's double white) would stop you from dying.

It's certainly better than FF12's fucking animation lock on the high level spells. That was fucking terrible.

Magic in 8 was for junctioning to stats and that's it. There were two exceptions Aura and Meltdown.

Junction Meltdown to Status Attack(unless death), and just keep everyone's HP in yellow. No one could really kill you from that level, anyway.
