Please do not post any discussions about Controller vs Mouse here; this is just a troubleshooting post for those who have chosen to use a controller. If someone feels this can be merged, into another sticky thread, please do.
As some of you probably saw, I was having some problems with the PS3 controller option, and I know a few others had some issues they were able to fix, and other still had some annoying ones. Through some experimentation, I was able to get both a PS3 and an Xbox controller working, and I thought I would make a post about how I fixed things so that I saw no further issues.
In order to use either, you have to first get drivers.
PS2: Motionjoy or Xpadder work, though I've been using Motionjoy and have no experience with Xpadder. Motionjoy is free, signed, but some out there worry about the source of the program. Xpadder is $10 bucks and I'm not sure if it is signed or not. I think both require you to have the PS3 controller plugged into the PC, to install the drivers, which is a pointed difference from the Xbox controller.
Xbox: Microsoft has their own drivers, and they can be installed without having a controller attached. See below for connection methods.
Controller issues:
Below are the issues that I experienced and were able to clear up. Since I never experienced the charge skill issue, I do not know if this can be fixed by the below.
1) Holding forward and attacking caused the menu to pop up and down, as if you were hitting ESC.
2) Doing basic attack combo would force you into an auto run mode. If there was any keyboard shortcut set up, you could not cancel out of this.
3) Doing basic attack combo would force you into an auto run mode, that you could cancel, by pressing the same direction you were going, if you removed the auto run keybind shortcut.
The way that I fixed all of the above was actually really easy, but not apparent at all:
1) Go into the games Options
2) Click on Shortcuts
3) Click on Restore Defaults
4) Click on Apply
As I had removed almost all of my keybinds, I don't know which of them needed to be set to Default, but this cleared up all of my controller issues. I then went back and changed a few keybinds, such as the Achievement and Skills shortcut, and my PS3 controller settings didn't change, so some settings do seem to be able to be modified.
Motionjoy Note: If you do change some Shortcuts, in the TERA game menu, re-check your Motionjoy profile, as sometimes, they would inexplicably change, for the L3 and Start button. If you don't have any buttons mapped to a keyboard key, such as ESC or M, you may never notice this.
Xbox Note: It wasn't very obvious to me, as I ever so rarely play on Xbox, so I'll point out that you have two ways of connecting the controller:
1) Wireless Controller and Xbox 360 PC wireless gaming receiver
2) Wired Controller
You can't, for example, just use a wireless Xbox controller and a USB charge/Play unit and assume the PC will recognize the controller attached to it. You have to use the above combo for the PC to recognize the Xbox controller is there.
Hopefully, others will find this post useful, and will have a better experience with their PS3/Xbox controllers.
