For some people their pet is like a family member. This cop murdered the dog for fucking barking. You cant defend that. It was a god damn blue healer not a pit or rot. The worst that dog could do is bark till you get a headache.

Again, a huge assumption based on your experience with dogs.

I guess we should draw up some flash cards for each breed so the Police Academy knows what dogs you can shoot and which are harmless.

Rot? Shoot it.
Pit? Shoot it.
Poodle? Harmless.
Chihuahua? Apply the billy club.
Husky? Shoot it.
Doberman? Shoot it.

I get the idea that dogs are close to people and we all think our pets are harmless balls of adorable fluff but when a cop walks into a dangerous situation (domestic violence no less), you have to make a decision on if a dog is dangerous and simply saying "well, that breed is generally harmless" isn't going to cut it. I'm sure many cops are dog owners themselves and do not wish to shoot a dog but if it's growling, unresponsive and potentially threatening you're left with little choice.

Shit is situational. If the pet is harmless, you leave it be. If the animal is potentially dangerous then you can either disable it or attempt to diffuse the situation by using the owner to call off the pet or shoot it.

We know which choice this cop made.

Something tells me he couldn't get his pepper spray out in time while already holding a gun and keeping an eye on who he thought was the suspect, but I could just be spiff balling. I wish all officers were from Krypton and possessed lightning quick reflexes. Hell, then he could have just frozen the dog in a block of ice instead! I absolutely agree he should apologize. I don't agree though that he should have set there and let a dog attack him while the suspect who was just attacking his wife with deadly force (as far as the cop was concerned) walked up and pulled the dog away.

Some of the people in this thread, lol. My dog is the nicest dog in the world, even to strangers. She'd probably help you steal my stuff if you came over, say good bye and hope you come back soon. If you put your hands on my wife in a way she deems threatening, she'd rip your throat out. She's bit the hell of out my leg before because my wife and I were goofing off in the kitchen and she shrieked and the dog was in the other room. She rounded the corner and bit right into the back of my thigh because she thought I was harming her and then immediately tried to separate us. She's only 55lbs, but you aren't just going to put your foot out if she comes charging at you if she thinks you're threatening myself or my wife. And no she doesn't snarl or anything else when she gets protective either to let you know it's coming.

That being said, yes this cop screwed up big time and not apologizing at this point is appalling, but acting like a 55lb dog isn't a threat is ridiculously stupid.

Nah, he shot immediately after finishing telling him to get the dog. It was at least a quarter of a second after, maybe even half a second.

He had a tazer and pepper spray. We've already covered how a poodle/cat could be a potential threat. It's how he dealt with that potential threat that is the problem.

Dogs can be threats yes. But giving a guy 2 seconds to get is dog is absolutely fucking stupid. Having your gun out when you haven't even verified that this is the person you're supposed to be after is fucking stupid. Not apologizing when you're 100% in the wrong is fucking stupid.

No it's not. It's easy to say that the one time they get the address wrong, but he had no reason to suspect it wasn't the guy he was looking for.
