Check the link. It's just one of OKCupid's many data aggregations. Everything is self-reported from users of their dating site. None of it is meant to be taken as gospel, they just like running numbers on their users and observing interesting trends.

It's just complied data from an online dating site. There could be huge flaws in the data due to the self-reporting nature the data is collected, so they're making these statements partially based on the assumption that people don't lie on their dating profile, lol. The most interesting statistic that I found out of that was more that gay people tend to only look up gay people. I know, shocking! But it takes away from the homophobic argument that gay people actively go after straights to turn them (at least, on this dating site). It is actually probably one of the more accurate statistics that they derived due to the extent you would need to go to in order to give a false positive (a straight person making a gay profile and looking up straight people).

As far as social experimenters go, I actually like the OKCupid team. They don't make any outrageous claims about how well their data can be generalized or applied to a large population. They're pretty clear about just being some math geeks who like running numbers on their users and that their conclusions only apply to their users.

That said, there will always be idiots who repost their data and make those sorts of claims for them.

Tangentially, I thought it was pretty fun that 2% of their users account for 23% of reported gay sex on their site. Talk about giving gays a bad rap. Non-slutty gays should adopt a new slogan, maybe something like "We are the 98%!".

I think the assumption isn't that people don't lie; it's that everyone lies at an equal rate.
