Yakuza 5: Five Cities, Five Main Characters

Sega appears to be going with a "5" theme for Yakuza 5. Joining the previously announced five cities, the game will also have five main characters. This is one up from previous titles, which have had at most four main characters.

The full Japanese name for Yakuza 5, as revealed in Famitsu this week, is "Ryu ga Gotoku 5: Yume Kanaeshi Mono." A rough (very rough) translation would be "Yakuza 5: Person Who Fulfills Dreams."

This early report from Famitsu comes via our usual flying get source, Sinobi. Sinobi also says that the game seems like it may be released in December (the phrasing suggests that it's not stated directly in the magazine).

As detailed in November, the five cities were previously announced as Sapporo, Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka and Fukuoka. Series producer Toshihiro Nagoshi also previously confirmed that Kazuma Kiryu would be one of the main characters.

It's unclear at present if Famitsu has additional character reveals, but we should be getting more details later in the day.

Torn on why they feel the need to introduce more and more playable characters but whatever, it's more Yakuza. Playing in Sapporo/Nagoya sounds like a lot of fun as well.

I love Yakuza but I'm getting a little tired of the multiple viewpoint story lines. I greatly prefer the entire game focusing on Kazuma Kiryu so this is kind of bittersweet news for me.

Chances are the reason they can't really focus on Kiryu is they've kind of finished his story arc with the third game. Him as a supporting character is perhaps a little painful to watch but not all the new characters were bad.

Which is a fair point. But not all of them are particularly strong. The young cop from 4 was particularly bad. Majima always remains entertaining. And I like Akiyama a lot. Saejima was meh. The romantic in me was still hoping for Kiryu to be reunited with Kaoru Sayama. But if they haven't done it by now, they probably won't do ever do it.

Not sure how I feel about the more realistic character designs, unless they intend on taming down some of the .......character behavior in #5, which'll be a downer for me.

Sega's Yakuza franchise is no stranger to collaborations with real world brands. But the latest Yakuza collaboration is with a fellow video game franchise.

Namco Bandai's Taiko Drum Master will appear in Yakuza 5 as a playable arcade unit. You'll be able to select from a handful of songs, including Mappy Ondo, Nijiiro Yumeiro Taikoiro and Shinsekai Yori.

The collaboration was announced in this week's Famitsu as part of a feature looking back at ten years of Taiko Drum Master. The magazine included a picture of Yakuza series producer Toshihiro Nagoshi playing the Taiko arcade unit.
