Atlus Announces Shin Megamitensei 4 For 3DS

Development has started on next numbered entry in Megaten franchise.

Famitsu has some major Atlus news this week. The magazine reveals that development has started on Shin Megamitensei IV. The target for this latest numbered entry in the franchise is 3DS.

According to Sinobi, who gets Famitsu in advance, Atlus will open an official site for the game at megaten4.jp tomorrow.

Goddamn what a coup for Nintendo.

Someone's posted a scan of what appears to be a 2-page ad in the Famitsu in question. No word on if 'that's all' but the website should open up in a few hours and answer all questions as to the extent of the announcement coverage.

If SMT IV assets get reused for anything, it'll be more handheld SMT spinoffs, but every indication so far is that P5 is bound for home consoles.

I seriously hope they don't feel the need to Persona-fy anything at all in this game and just go back to their roots and just.. motherFUCK persona. Its become Atlus' Madden, their Call of Duty. Aside from the fighting game (which is almost entirely due to the fact that ArcSys is involved) I don't even care for the Persona series anymore.

Finally after all the Persona rehash/releases we get a fucking real MegaTen game. Rant over.

It was a good choice, but the reality is that if you're a stickler for Japanese voice over you now have to import a 3DS for your SMT4 jollies.

It's fine to have your individual preferences and all, but let's not forget that Persona was the entry point into the MegaTen series for many people. I can't speak for everyone, but I'd have never heard of (then gone on to play) the other games in the series if not for Persona. I'm glad Persona exists for that reason, and (at least thus far) there hasn't been an entry I've disliked, which is remarkable, given how lackluster (by comparison) the current gen is for RPGs..

That said, I also hope they bring out another Raidou game soon.
