There was no real customization in diablo 2 ie talent/stat points. There was a right way to distribute stat points, and everything else was wrong. Same with skills. You chose your cookie-cutter destination, maxed out the 2 skills you wanted to primary and all of their synergies (and before 1.10 you didn't even have synergies), done. It's not like there was actually choice in that game. "Oh my firewall build uses only 15 points in firewall and puts the other 5 into charged bolt" wasn't something you're likely to hear.
d3 is definitely hurting from lack of things to do at 60 though. No ladder, no post-xp "merit" grind, no need to make multiple characters of the same class...the only thing to do is endlessly pop pinatas.
