Fuck, I hate agreeing with that, but its true as hell.
How many paying customers does FFXI have?
I'd be more interested in individual users since mule accounts skew things. I'd be surprised with anything over 150k at this point, though.
The real question is does it have more than the TORtanic?
-3 Burtgangs helped restore my faith in humanity, +2494 Aegis once again crushed it.
To be fair, Aegis may not be terribly useful when thrown smack dab in the middle of what our current content looks like(and it may become useful at some point in the future), but it's not exactly deficient by design. If you need a sturdy someone to be holding an enemy with a large and powerful magical arsenal, an Aegis PLD is very nifty to have around. Conversely, Burtgang is just fundamentally atrocious. If you need to mitigate physical damage, use JA and spells to make your Aegis's block-rate skyrocket, or use an Ochain. Gearing for physical mitigation beyond that is fairly futile, nevermind taking 30,000 alexandrite out of circulation.
Aegis/Paladin hasn't really been useful unless you where in a bad LS for a very very long time, considering the fact it has been well over 5 years since Paladin had a place in this game I wouldn't look forward to it becoming useful at any point in the future either. To be fair, Aegis may not be terribly useful when thrown smack dab in the middle of what our current content looks like(and it may become useful at some point in the future)
That falls back to fundamental issues w the game: why use a pld with minor dd capability when u can use a dd job who in full pdt gear can offer exponential higher dd numbers while taking almost as little damage as the pld.
Most people are not willing to do new event/hnm content without a pld though.
This pretty much sums up the PLD cycle.
New unfamiliar content is released, PLD is used > time passes, people adjust to new content, demand tapers off > PLDs return to their cave dwellings and begin to hibernate through the long winter of having fuck all to offer > repeat.
Even then, most groups that aren't composed entirely of idiots can skip PLD entirely and send well geared melee vs. anything.
Thats pretty much what I said..that IS what I said.
First fight: go in with the security of a PLD, realize there is nothing that the mob does constantly that makes the pld necessary (either because it 1shots the pld either way or it doesnt deal enough damage to warrant the pld), and just tank it with DD.
and seriously, SE needs to adjust the enmity cap, granted everyone knows this already. Was trying to farm Iron Plates last night, went to fight Tabilia for Mercury. Tank it on thief to 35%, only nukes until that point from blm come from attempted grellow proc. Blizzaja, Blizzard5, Blizzard4, Blizzaja, mob changes target at 15%.
