A post on Eurogamer this morning claims that Ubisoft has confirmed a retail release for Beyond Good & Evil HD. Of course, the confirmation doesn’t seem apparent on any Ubisoft sites, but I’m willing to believe Eurogamer has the goods.

Anyway, the game will come bundled with From Dust and Outland—two Ubisoft games previously only available as downloadable titles—on September 21. The bundle will also be an Xbox 360 exclusive, says the post.

As to whether or not this package will see a North American release as well remains to be seen. But who knows? Ubisoft’s been doing some great business everywhere…I can’t imagine why they’d only release some of their fan-favorite stuff in one region only.

A post on IGN from yesterday metaphorically jumps up and down excitedly, having caught Microsoft’s general manager of Windows Live, Brian Hall, making reference to a “new Xbox” in an interview with the Verge from last week.

At around the 4:30 mark in the Vergecast, Hall throws a reference to the new console pretty casually while talking about Hotmail being relaunched as Outlook.com, and the future of Microsoft’s other products:

We’ve had Hotmail and operated Hotmail for about 16 years. We obviously have Exchange, and Outlook, that people use at work. We just decided it was time to do something new and bring the best from each of those and put them together and release it right in time for the new wave of products that we could have coming out with Windows 8, with the new version of Office, with the new Windows Phone and the new Xbox.”
The IGN post rightly points out that this is the first time Microsoft has made any kind of official reference to a new console that will succeed the Xbox 360—even though everyone basically knows that it’s currently in development under the codename “Durango.” Still, Microsoft won’t make an announcement until they’re good and ready. When asked for a statement on Hall’s interview, they replied to IGN thusly

“The comments to The Verge were not understood in their intended context. When Brian mentioned a ‘new wave of products,’ he was referring to the full lineup of products coming later this year from Microsoft, including Windows 8, Office, Windows Phone and of course our fall Xbox update which will bring a host of new consumer experiences like Xbox Music, Videos, Games on Windows 8 and Xbox SmartGlass.”
So, you know, there’s that. While I think it’s certainly conceivable that Hall meant the new Xbox UPDATE (which, you know, is a whole extra word that isn’t actually in the quote), it’s far more likely that Hall was answering a question honestly to those who asked him. I don’t mind Microsoft wanting to hold tight on announcing the new console, but at a certain point, let’s stop beating around the bush. We know that the thing EXISTS. We’re not stupid. Don’t treat us as such, you big corporation, you.

Sure, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game is about two years old, but Ubisoft hasn’t forgotten about it. A new downloadable content pack is slated for release on August 19.

Major Nelson’s mentions an online multiplayer pack plus Wallace Wells (Scott’s roommate) will cost 400 Microsoft Points or $5. We’re guessing the PlayStation 3 version will get DLC around the same time.

The People Who Make Persona Are Now Focusing On Persona 5
No more distractions. It's been four years since the last real Persona, and the people behind the series want to release a fifth one.

Speaking in this week's issue of Famitsu, as translated by Andriasang, Atlus exec Katsura Hashino said the team has submitted illustrations and made progress on Persona 5. No word on an official announcement or release date. But hey, progress!

Hashino is also developing "a collaborative project that will surprise everyone," he told the mag.

The latest spinoff in Atlus's popular series, fighting game Persona 4 Arena, came out yesterday for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Atlus will release Persona 4 Golden on Vita later this year.

Tecmo Koei President Teases New Collaborations, Says Ni-Oh Is An Alpha Stage
Speaking with Famitsu magazine, "Kou Shibusawa" the president of Tecmo Koei said Ni-Oh is finally making progress. The game was originally announced in 2005, but development was put on hold until Team Ninja took over in 2010. Ni-Oh, Shibusawa says, in an alpha stage.

Shibusawa also teased two announcements. Bit by bit, Tecmo Koei is making progress on a top secret new IP title and they’re currently in negotiations for surprising collaboration games. Tecmo Koei worked with Namco Bandai to make Dynasty Warriors games for One Piece and Gundam. They also have Fist of the North Star: Ken’s Rage 2, which is slated for release in Japan later this year.

A Microsoft job ad has seemingly revealed that Xbox 720 will support Skype.

The company is seeking a 'UI Designer & Prototyper -Xbox' to work at its UK-based Skype division on projects related to the "next gen Xbox".

"The team you'll join is responsible for Skype in the living room (broadly the home), across various devices but with a focus on the large screen and the next generation of Xbox," the job ad reads.

Among the successful candidate's responsibilities, it goes on to list: "Working with the Xbox team directly in Redmond, USA. (both current Xbox and next gen)"

We'd ask Microsoft for comment, but it would only allege that the phrasing in the job ad was 'not understood in its intended context', as it did earlier this week when an executive at the company mentioned a fresh wave of products coming out including the "new Xbox".

Also earlier this week, a job vacancy for a senior role at Microsoft's entertainment division suggested that the next gen Xbox will be released before 2014.

The advert, seeking a Central Marketing Group director, claims that "over the next eighteen months Microsoft will release new versions of all of our most significant products including Windows (Client, Server, Phone and Azure), Office and Xbox, along with completely new offerings like Microsoft Surface".

Microsoft acquired VOIP service Skype in May 2011 at reported cost of £5 billion. It said at the time: "Skype will support Microsoft devices like Xbox and Kinect, Windows Phone and a wide array of Windows devices, and Microsoft will connect Skype users with Lync, Outlook, Xbox Live and other communities."

Epic Games announces the opening of Impossible Studios, a company comprised of highly skilled, senior-level game development talent. Based in Hunt Valley, Maryland, Impossible is the latest addition to Epic’s network, which includes corporate headquarters in Cary, North Carolina; ChAIR Entertainment in Salt Lake City, Utah; People Can Fly in Warsaw, Poland; Epic Games Korea in Seoul, Korea; and Epic Games Japan in Yokohama, Japan.

Founded in June, Impossible brings world-class game development expertise and creativity to Epic’s growing team. With heralded roots in real-time strategy and role-playing entertainment software, Impossible brings its own distinct design and technical sensibilities to Epic’s portfolio of games and game technology across major platforms.

Led by studio director Sean Dunn, Impossible’s first project is the touch-based action role-playing game “Infinity Blade: Dungeons” for iOS. “Infinity Blade: Dungeons,” which was conceived at Epic’s Cary studio, is being developed in collaboration with Epic and ChAIR under Impossible’s roof in Maryland.

Impossible consists of former employees of Big Huge Games, creators of the renowned “Rise of Nations” strategy games, “Catan” for Xbox LIVE Arcade, “Age of Empires III: The Asian Dynasties” for PC, and “Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning” for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. Big Huge Games earned the Baltimore Business Journal’s “Best Places to Work 2011” award and was also honored as one of Game Developer magazine’s top 30 developers in the world earlier this year.

“Epic Games has truly embraced this stellar collection of developers who were displaced by the closing of Big Huge Games,” said studio director Sean Dunn. “They have looked after us with complete care, giving us all the tools and resources we need to make a lot of gamers happy.”

“We were so glad we could help keep this great team together, and we’re lucky to have them,” said Epic Games President Dr. Michael Capps. “At the time, I said that finding a full team of superstars was ‘impossible’ and apparently the name stuck! Pairing the imagination and experience of Impossible with Epic’s technology, IP and resources makes for a business greater than the sum of its parts.”

Capps will lead an “Infinity Blade: Dungeons” panel with the game’s lead designer, Ian Frazier, and author, Brandon Sanderson, at Dragon*Con in Atlanta on August 31. “Infinity Blade: Dungeons” is set for release on the App Store later this year.

Rumor: PopCap preparing Plants vs Zombies multiplayer shooter
The next Plants vs Zombies game may not be a tower defense fans would expect. Instead, the latest rumor suggests it will be a game unlike anything PopCap has ever done. Various signs and one unnamed source have indicated it could take the series in a multiplayer-action direction, possibly even as a first-person shooter.

It started with a handful of job openings. Supperannuation reported that the new PopCap team at EA Canada Burnaby's campus showed openings for a 3D animator and a multiplayer designer. The candidates are expected to have console experience, and the multiplayer designer is asked to have experience as a level designer on a shooter or action title. Finally, a world modeler asked for experience with "cartoon style and tone."

Then later, an unnamed source in the Canadian industry told Kotaku that the team is working on a multiplayer, first-person console shooter based in the Plants vs Zombies franchise. It may sound crazy, but it fits all the pieces we know. It does raise certain questions, though, like "what?" and "why?" and "how do you make an FPS with one team literally rooted to the ground?"

According to the report, the project will be submitted to PopCap for final approval later this month, at which point it could simply be taken off the company slate. So even if this rumor is true, the game might never see the light of day if PopCap or EA decides to nix it in these early stages. Shacknews has contacted EA and will update as more information becomes available.

Epic Games now owns Bulletstorm developer People Can Fly, a studio they acquired a majority share of in 2007, the company told Polygon today.

The purchase of the Warsaw, Poland-based developer was tied to the departure of Adrian Chmielarz, Andrzej Poznanski and Michal Kosieradzki, Epic's Mark Rein told Polygon in an interview. It won't impact the game's the studio is working.

"We doubled down on People Can Fly," Rein said. "It was something we always hoped to do."

The decision to buy out the company, which ultimately led to the departure of Chmielarz, Poznanski and Kosieradzk all happened within the last week, Rein said. But he said the group's departure was amiable.

"We will be helping (Chmielarz) with some future announcements," he said. "Our paths will be crossing again."

Epic Games relationship with People Can Fly, which got a name for itself after developing shooter Painkiller, started years ago when Chmielarz approached Epic about licensing their Unreal Engine, Rein said.

The studio was looking for a new project, and the money to keep the business afloat, and Epic was impressed with the talent they saw.

"We hooked them up right away," Rein said. "They did a really cool prototype, awesome art and design."

Rein went to Epic president Mike Capps to find work for the struggling company, and they floated People Can Fly some cash and ultimately brought them in to work on the PC version of Gears of War.

That relationship led to People Can Fly working on all future Gears of War iterations and ultimately being handed development of Gears of War: Judgement.

Epic Games now has five wholly owned subsidiaries: Chair, Impossible Games, People Can Fly, Epic Japan and Epic Korea. All but Japan and Korea spend a bulk of their time developing games.

While the purchase led to the departure of three key people at People Can Fly, Rein stressed that it won't have a negative impact on Judgement. Nor, he said, will the departure of Rod Fergusson, who left the company this month to go to Irrational Games, where he will be working on Bioshock Infinite.

"Rod was the director of production, he was overseeing all of the producers," Rein said. "That's not to say he wasn't touching it at all, but he no longer had that direct role."

That is pretty damn cool. I would imagine that they are going to have a somewhat limited supply, or I might seriously consider getting one early in 2013. I JUST had the owner of a neighborhood lounge/bar add a lot of Neo Geo titles to their mame cabinet, but it would be pretty fun to have one of these at home. Love me some NEO GEO fightan games.
