Yeah, I played FFXI for ages, passed on EQ and Halo (all of them), but yeah. I know addiction for sure. That's why I want to pick SF up in some capacity and try to at least get to the point to where I can DP every time I want to LOL. I still struggle with that shit. That's how bad I am.. but I've always been on controller and have never really tried to learn shit.
You need an arcade stick to have fun or learn SF4 properly.
...seriously? No complicated links needed? No actual combos? Just..going forward and pressing like three different buttons wins the game like that? Wow. D: Here I was thinking if I couldn't consistently DP, I'd be le fucked. Lol.
Yeah I know. That's also been a deterrent of me wanting to pick this up and learn. I feel I wouldn't learn properly without a stick.
He just meant some people are so bad, and stupid, that you can sit in one spot and poke/anti-air them the entire match to win.
Please never say "le fucked" again....
@Welt, the first two matches go 1-1 so idk what you're smoking lol. NYC crew was off all weekend, even flux.
Aki, I played Deejay for all of 20-30 minutes, once you learn to block and properly AA, online scrubs are easy. They literally all jump. I've gotten from 500-1k PP with deejay while only knowing a single, simple combo (cr. lp, cr. lp, cr. lp, cr. mk (hard knockdown).
@Liroy I didn't watch the first two. I watched a random one in the middle and the last one to see who won.
Gotcha. Yeah, I figure not all people can really be that terrible, even if you have to start from somewhere. I'd like to think my ability to learn a game is pretty good, but when it comes to the meta of some things, especially this.. it's obviously not easy.
I'll say whatever I want to, Liroy and you can't stop me. :<
As for taking time to learn a character and learning to block/AA.. yeah. That's the type of stuff I worry about actually learning and being reasonably competent at doing. That and DPs. Fuck DPs. I am terribad.
Well, that's good to know I suppose if I do pick this up. I really do want to.
Pick Bison and st.rh all day erry day.
See, I'm the type of person who pretty goes into the game and learns only the special moves, personally. But I'd say to learn a good base, learn a simple combo, that has a built in hit confirm, and learn a punish combo (as in, you do this when you block a DP). If your character has a fireball, then use it, but outside of that, the first thing to do is learn your normals -- all of them. Which to use at which range, which will get you punished if you use them at a certain range, and which you use to anti air. After that, move onto more advanced stuff.
I still think, personally and maybe biased, that outside of Ryu, Vega is a really good character to learn with for online. He has good footsies, and absolutely no reversal, so that you learn not to rely on mashing DP through block and hit strings. His combos and punishes are VERY basic and he probably has the least execution in the game (No FADC, no fireball, charge character). Ryu is still the best though, but vega is not bad for not picking up bad habits and learning how to AA (since he has some of, if not the worst, AA in the game).
And with that said, ECT is over, fuck a SF4, time to learn marvel.
I definitely had a huge case of wanting to run before learning how to walk. Get your basics down really well because you'll win more matches knowing how to stand your ground than knowing flashy combos and having no defense.
Which character are you looking to use for now?
Balrog is the easiest to learn to play. Do not pick Ryu you will get frustrated because everyone will body you.
You can also try Sakura since you can jump for free with her hard punch against most of the cast.
yeah but that just gives you bad habits for other characters and/or 2013 lol
Damn, you guys really do have a problem with j.HP.
EDIT:
Also, this gets me every time.

Honestly? I have no idea. I enjoy watching the whole cast honestly. Not really locked to picking only one character, though that'd obviously be the best.
Balrog and Sakura both look like fun.
For Bison..I've never really understood how to actually play Charge characters, or how long is too long for a charge, that sort of thing. D: That's where my noobness is.
With Ryu.. yeah, I know he's like a good 'starting' character, but I do just want to learn the basics and stuff.
This is how I played SF2 when I was starting out on fighting games when I was like 8. Used to troll the shit out of my cousins/friends who didn't learn just doing basic moves. Honestly, most people don't realize that in games like this, you only really need to do basic shit. If you land your basic shit 100% but land the most advanced stuff 60% of the time, I'd rather just do the basic stuff over and over again til I can do more without fucking up. The problem with this generation of fighting gamers is that they're exposed to all the flashy shit first and it's cool because it looks nice, but you won't see an old school player doing any of that shit if they think it'll cost them the match,
If I knew about the NYC scene when I was growing up and playing in arcades, I'd probably be a monster. Instead, I got into the super smash bros melee scene like a dumbass which further solidified my dependency on using a controller.
Justin is out of UFGT.
Operation: Get Out of KOF Pools in Winners is go.
I would not start with a charge character (Balrog) if I was you.
Start with Ryu and just learn how to do Crouch + MK > Fireball.
Learn to do Light Punch Shoryuken > Ultra (no FADC) as a punsih to people jumping next.
