I think we have different definitions of fascinating.

It really is a pretty damn interesting scenario. The state legislature is capable of forcing him to hold the election this year. If he sets it to October, he wastes a ton of money in a blatant pure political move. If he puts it alongside Booker's election, which is the obvious reasonable decision, he creates a big jump in black voter turnout which will be 70-80% against him.
And that's not even getting into the fact that if he doesn't appoint a republican, he loses any chance whatsoever at getting through a republican presidential primary. If he does appoint a republican (he will), he's shitting all over his constituency which hasn't elected a republican senator to either seat in 41 years.
yea talk about a no win situation. he made the best call by calling for special election in october, now he can just hide behind democracy.
oh, wow, he went ahead and set it for October...
so he's spending millions of taxpayer dollars to lower the amount of black people voting on his ticket
I'm not so sure he'll appoint a republican to be honest. Yeah it could hurt him in terms of support from the party, but there does tend to be some expectation that you replace a senator with someone of his own party. If Christie ends up being the best looking option for a presidential run, the party will fall in line. He's not THAT moderate when it comes down to it.
Edit- Aannnddd apparently it's a moot point now lol.
He's not moderate at all, he's just somewhat reasonable.
Just like replacing a seat that's been elected democrat for 40+ years with a democrat is the reasonable thing to do.
Unfortunately, being reasonable will completely fuck you in a republican primary. In fact, the term "being primaried" is something that appeared when anytime a republican did something reasonable there was a high likelihood they'd get a strongly supported unreasonable primary opponent ASAP.
Or we just find different things fascinating. I'm a student of politics. Always have been, always will be.
Anyway, a smart play by Christie that will ultimately hurt his numbers by a miniscule margin. Not nearly enough to let Barbara Buono get the momentum she needs though.
Even with the extra dems/blacks at the polls in November voting for Booker to the senate, did the democratic opponent have any chance at unseating him? I mean, he's massively fucking popular, no?
no
it's about keeping his victory margin wide, with a little bit of down ballot concerns as well
lol@thinking GOP hypocrisy will somehow negatively affect them.
talking about presidential election
mainline and tea party republicans already hate him, now all his opponents get to scream about how he wasted taxpayer money to get a dem into office asap instead of trying to get an extra undemocratic R vote into the senate for as long as he can
The republicans are still going through their civil war, and there's no end in sight.
The damning effect of the southern strategy is that they won't vote for anybody in a primary who doesn't kiss that ring (to which Nixon and Reagan both did). And the path for a republican victory on the national level means that they're going to have to contest some states that are turning blue. Chris Christie is the one for them to win nationally, but the south (and to a lesser extent the mid-west) wasn't going to give him the primary vote.
Especially after that quasi-embarrassing Romney loss, there is no way the south is going to let an elite northern republican try to get the nomination again.
Despite the special election designed to suppress the black vote, Booker still crushed (55% of the vote), and is now the second black member of the US Senate.
