What's are the plots and themes like for KH games? I've never played them before, but I'm not a big fan of the "coming of age," "power of friends and love," "finding courage to persevere," etc., kinds of themes. I generally prefer complex and darker tones (e.g. Xenogears and -saga), but with these compilations, I'm considering jumping in.

Would I be wasting my time?

If you're not into the things you listed, then yes. Think about it, it's part disney. It does have some darker tones but it all revolves around friendship, power of the heart, etc. But the gameplay is fantastic even if you aren't into the story.
