India won't be outdone by Japan, the Republican Party or the USAF in the rape category.
A 17-year-old Indian girl who was gang-raped killed herself after police pressured her to drop the case and marry one of her attackers, police and a relative said on Thursday.
Amid the ongoing uproar over the gang-rape of a student on a bus in New Delhi earlier this month, the latest case has again shone the spotlight on the police's handling of sex crimes.
One police officer has been sacked and another suspended over their conduct after the assault during the festival of Diwali on November 13 in the Patiala region in the Punjab, according to officials.
The teenager was found dead on Wednesday night after swallowing poison.
Her death came as it emerged that the names, addresses and photographs of convicted rapists will be posted online by police in India to publicly shame them for their crimes.
Inspector General Paramjit Singh Gill said that the teenager had been "running from pillar to post to get her case registered" but officers failed to open a formal inquiry.
"One of the officers tried to convince her to withdraw the case," Gill, the police chief for the area, told AFP.
Before her death, there had been no arrests over her case although three people were detained on Thursday. Two of them were her alleged male attackers and the third was a suspected woman accomplice.
The victim's sister told Indian television that the teenager had been urged to either accept a cash settlement or marry one of her attackers.
"The police started pressuring her to either reach a financial settlement with her attackers or marry one of them," her sister told the NDTV network.
Meanwhile, the Press Trust of India reported that a police officer has been suspended for allegedly refusing to register a rape complaint in the northern state of Chhattisgar.
The woman and her husband later brought the case to the attention of a more senior officer and a hunt has now been launched for her attacker, an auto rickshaw driver.
Official figures show that 228,650 of the total 256,329 violent crimes recorded last year in India were against women.
The real figure is thought to be much higher as so many women are reluctant to report attacks to the police.
During an address to the chief ministers of India's states on Thursday, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh pledged to bring in new laws to cover attacks on women.
I mean, is it rape rape or the 'oh I got too drunk and I regret sleeping with that guy' rape?
That's the ultimate misogynistic question.
Fucked up
Delhi rape victim's health is deteriorating:

The 23-year-old arrived in Singapore on Thursday after undergoing three operations in a Delhi hospital.
"Her vital signs are deteriorating with signs of severe organ failure," hospital official Kelvin Loh said.
The girl who was raped on the bus passed away.

(CNN) -- A 23-year-old Indian woman, whose gang rape aboard a bus in New Delhi spawned days of mass protests across India, has died, according to a doctor who was treating her at a Singapore hospital.
The patient "passed away peacefully" at 4:45 a.m. Saturday (3:45 p.m. ET Friday), with her family and Indian officials at her side, Dr. Kelvin Loh, chief executive officer at Mount Elizabeth Hospital, said in a statement.
The woman had been in "extremely critical condition" since being admitted Thursday to the Singapore hospital, and Loh had said Friday that she'd "taken a turn for the worse."
"She had suffered from severe organ failure following serious injuries to her body and brain," Loh said. "She was courageous in fighting for her life for so long against the odds, but the trauma to her body was too severe for her to overcome."
Authorities haven't released the name of the rape victim, but protesters are calling her Damini, which means "lightning" in Hindi.

Her injuries were so severe that she spent days in intensive care, battling for her life, after the December 16 incident.
Police said Saturday that she had recovered enough to give a statement to a magistrate from her hospital bed the night before. But on Sunday, she underwent another surgery to wash out infection in her abdomen, her doctors said.
Reported rape cases have increased drastically over the past 40 years -- from 2,487 in 1971 to 24,206 in 2011, according to official figures. New Delhi alone reported 572 rapes last year and more than 600 in 2012.
Horrible![]()
Well, at the very least her death doesn't appear to be in vain. Sounds like the winds of change are brewing in India. I know one thing though, I sincerely doubt those men who raped her are going to get away with their lives.
I think you're looking at this from a personal point of reference and not one of people in india.
It's not properly used there, the statement itself absconds the woman from any responsibility for getting drunk and sleeping with someone - regretting it later is not responsibility.
It's safe to say that a girl getting gang raped and then beaten to a bloody pulp with metal pipes constitutes misogynistic in this case.
That wasn't the quote I commented on though :3
The quote you were commenting on was jokingly implying that the rape victims in India were drunken sluts who were crying rape afterwards, which is clearly, obviously, and without controversy a broadly misogynistic statement.
Y'all missing the point. What's more important to Church than whether or not hundreds of thousands of women are the victims of under reported and unpunished violent crimes is the meaning of a word or two.
Pretty much
The individuals involved are going to be charged with murder now.
