Andy Reid was consistently terrible with clock management, consistently misused and underused the running game, in spite having several truly great RBs during that time, consistently made poor challenges, and called the most idiotic time outs this side of Marvin Lewis. The Eagles defense was consistently in the top 10 in yards and scoring, and they were never something he was really hands-on with. The Eagles offense wasn't consistently in the top ten in yards, or in scoring. He was in a terrible division and an even worse conference for the first 6 years of his coaching, with one of the most talented squads in the NFL. It was like the SEC playing Mudville Flatts Junior College. Hell, they lost to Romo in a blowout. Since 2006, the Eagles are 3-4 in the playoffs, with one NFC Championship appearance... which they lost to the Cardinals.
So yeah, I'm happy that this model of consistency is coming to the AFC West. He doesn't have one of the three best DCs of the last 20 years to bail him out any more.
Now I really hope the chiefs and kevin kolb murder the AFC West.
I saw one pass from RGIII to Kendell Wright last year, might of been that OU game where Baylor came back to win. RGIII threw a Drew Brees esque pass, I knew then this guy was going to be great in the NFL
He's going to be a pain in the ass for all the NFCeast for years to come. Love seeing scouts having to eat their words now that he brought his team into the playoffs.
I really enjoyed some of the NFL guys on Twitter basically saying that RGIII was clearly the best player available last year, and most scouts were hyping Luck for so long and they were so stubborn they just couldn't knock him off the top spot. It's sort of a moot point, since both guys are amazeballs, but I thought it was interesting nonetheless.
I'll admit, I thought the Redskins overpaid for the pick at the time. I knew they needed a lot more pieces on defense and offensive line to compete with New York and Dallas, and that would have to be done through the draft since their free agent signings under Snyder have been horrific. But I guess Shanahan and Son knew better.
RGIII will be great, if he doesn't turn into a Michael Vick and get body aids from all the hits he takes
Your disagreement fills me with confidence. The fact that the In Support of Andy Reid article has to mention the Packers (woefully mismanaged for half that stretch), and the Jets (woefully mismanaged since Ewbank) as positive points, and demonstrates that the Eagles defense was consistently great during Jim Johnson's tenure, consistently bad since (and the one good DC they've had, Reid fired this year when the offense was throwing games away), and had an offense with lack of production (Really? Not using your RBs to run the ball is using them well? Okay), demonstrates how thin the case really is. Defending Andy Reid requires putting the 2001-2004 campaigns on a higher level of importance than 2005-2011, and flat out ignoring 2012. Reid gets far more credit for the Eagle's success than he deserves; now, he's getting the blame. I can't wait for another 5-6 years of not having to worry about Kansas City.
I think the thing people forget about Reid is player development. He's had a pretty good track record of taking raw talent and coaching it up, and also utilizing different types of players in his systems.
I do agree with you that Jim Johnson was far more integral to their success though.
To be fair the eagles thought it was a good idea to play fantasy football in real life and got burned
also, KC defense has solid players, its offense is hugely lol. Bringing in Andy Reid to throw 15 screen passes to jamaal charles a week is just what the doctor ordered.
At least some of those defensive players have been on his team long enough. And if the argument is that he's good at developing early and not late, well, that's not the most exciting thing in the world. Who are his well groomed stars then? I just don't see it.
I think Reid is a good coach. I don't like that trope about him, however.
i think this means arizona hires ray horton which sucks because i liked the idea of him in philly
