If it wasn't only local network it'd be cool. I thought about using it for ffxi(bought through steam) but local kills it. If i am near my local network why not just sit in front of my PC.

So according to some reviews this thing:

1- Streams within your house at no more than 100 feet
2- Has constant PC disconnects and incompatibilities
3- Works with a very reduced number of games
4- The streaming feature is considered to be in beta stage by Nvidia
5- Obviously many PC exclusive games/genres are not supported due to the control scheme (No MOBA, RTS, MMO, Simulators and the like)

This thing is not meant to be anything but a gadget to tinker with.

it'll be the world's best emulator once we figure out how to hack it though! You know, like old PSPs...

If you're thinking about buying this you might as well burn $350 dollars on the floor of your local gamestop. At the very least you'll make the news.

This thing can only play android/mobile games(lol) natively? To play actual video games, you need a supported video card and it runs like shit? ...and it's $350 + the worst design ever? well ok...

I'll wait until I can buy a used one or generation 2, assuming it works better in the future... Not gonna waste money on it ATM, I'd rather buy a PS4

This morning, NVIDIA dropped a bomb, announcing that they have lowered the price of SHIELD from the original $349 mark, to just $299. Thanks to enough community feedback and response to the product from potential buyers, NVIDIA felt it best to lower the price, allowing them to get the device into the hands of even more dedicated gamers. For those that already pre-ordered SHIELD at the $349 price, NVIDIA says that once the device ships, only the new price of $299 will be charged to their cards.

In addition to the lower price tag, NVIDIA placed an official ship date for the device, finally. The release date for SHIELD has been set for next Thursday, June 27. As far as we know, at that time, you will be able to purchase the device online through several online retailers, as well as in several brick and mortar partners like GameStop.

So, does this lower price tag ignite a new desire for the device? Does this change anything? Let’s hear your thoughts.

    http://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2013/06...-better-price/

A new kind of open gaming device needs a new kind of development process.

Rather than being secretive about SHIELD and what it can do, we decided to bring gamers in on the conspiracy, announcing our plan to bring a portable gaming device with console-class controls and a high-def 5-inch screen to market in January at the Consumer Electronics Show.

Most of all, we wanted this device to be open and provide the best possible experience—whether you’re playing Android or PC games, or enjoying your favorite movies, music, and other apps on the go.

Since then, we’ve put SHIELD in the hands of thousands of gamers. Some have been professional press. Others have been inside our own company. But most have been people like the tens of thousands who streamed through our booth at PAX East and E3.

And their reactions have been more than just positive.

They’ve helped us build a better product. Feedback from gamers is why SHIELD’s triggers have the perfect throw length. Why SHIELD’s buttons have just the right amount of give. Why SHIELD’s thumb sticks are so satisfying to flick. Why playing games on SHIELD’s pure Android software feels so slick.

The result: while SHIELD isn’t available until June 27th – we’re making that official today – it’s already grabbed awards by the fistful – including dozens of ‘Best of Show’ awards at CES, Computex and E3.

Now it’s time for one more change.

We’ve heard from thousands of gamers that if the price was $299, we’d have a home run.

So we’re changing the price of SHIELD to $299.

If you’ve already pre-ordered SHIELD, you’ll be charged the new, lower price. You will only be charged $299 when the product ships.

We want to get SHIELD into the hands of as many gamers as possible.

That’s because we think they’ll have the same reaction to it as thousands of gamers already have: joy.

    Delayed
We’re grateful for all the enthusiasm that’s been expressed for SHIELD, our new portable gaming device. And we’re eager to get it into your hands.

But we won’t do that until it’s fully up to the exacting standards that NVIDIA’s known for. And some final quality-assurance testing has just turned up a mechanical issue that we’re not happy with.

So, while we announced last week that SHIELD will go on sale this Thursday, we’ve taken the hard decision to delay shipping until next month.

The issue relates to a third-party mechanical component, and we’re working around the clock with the supplier to get it up to our expectations.

We apologize to those who have preordered SHIELDs and to all those who are waiting for them to go on sale. But we want every SHIELD to be just right.

We’ll let you know when we have an exact shipping date in July. We think it will be worth the wait.

    1080p & 60 FPS streaming added
Nvidia’s latest firmware update for its Android-based Shield gaming tablet allows for full HD streams, improved controller emulation, and more.

IGN reports the latest update adds 1080p, 60FPS streaming for PC games such as Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag and Battlefield 4, as opposed to the 720p available before.

The update also introduces some changes to the Android Gamepad Mapper, allowing you to use analog sticks instead of motion input like gyroscope controls, and to map movement and look controls to the analog sticks instead of virtual buttons.

Finally, GRID streaming is now in beta in Northern California.

    Lets try this again..

    Nvidia Shield Tablet announced
Shield tablet contains a 192-Core Tegra K1, suppots a new wireless controller, sports a 8-inch full HD display front-facing speakers, and there’s also an optional protective cover which can be used as a kick-stand to prop up the device.

The device’s wireless controller provides “precision, low latency and ergonomics that committed gamers demand.”

It offers optional LTE for online gaming anywhere to play over 400 Shield-optimized Android games and the ability to wirelessly home stream PC gaming libraries as well.

Here’s a list of capabilities and features:

    • PC Streaming: First to stream games from a PC desktop or notebook, from anywhere in the home – using NVIDIA GameStream technology to stream from systems powered by an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 6xx series or greater GPU.
    • Cloud Streaming: First to stream PC games from the cloud. Gamers can access the NVIDIA GRID cloud gaming beta, available exclusively to SHIELD owners in Northern California, to instantly stream a library of high-quality PC games, and then save them in the cloud.
    • Twitch and NVIDIA ShadowPlay: First to feature Twitch – the leading video platform and community for gamers – which is also integrated with ShadowPlay, an advanced game-capture tool that lets users save and stream their greatest gaming moments. Gamers can stream titles from the SHIELD tablet to friends and foes worldwide. SHIELD Tablet also includes a 5MP front camera to enhance the image of the gamer overlaid on the Twitch gamecast.
    • Console Mode: First to feature NVIDIA Console Mode, which takes your tablet gameplay to your big screen TV. Console Mode transforms the device into a full living-room gaming and entertainment experience. Gamers can set up their SHIELD wireless controller, sit back on their couch and play Android games, browse the web and watch their favorite movies — all in native 1080p HD.
A stylus allows tablet experiences that touch-only tablets can’t match, and the NVIDIA DirectStylus 2 technology on the SHIELD tablet is a game-changer. Twice as responsive as its predecessor, DirectStylus 2 technology enables the first GPU-accelerated 3D painting. This enables a new capability where pigment and paint mix and bleed physically, in real time, and the palette is naturally illuminated in 3D as the user adjusts the light source.

Also bundled is the popular Frostbyte game Trine 2: Complete Story.

Sheild tablet comes with either Wi-Fi connectivity, or Wi-Fi and LTE. It’s available in 16and 32GB, with MicroSD (up to 128GB), starting at $299. The SHIELD wireless controller retails for $59. The SHIELD tablet cover retails for $39.

The tablet, wireless controller and tablet cover are now available for pre-order in the United States, Canada and select European countries.
