As someone who lives in LA, I haven't given "the situation" the slightest consideration as far as my plans, where I go, what I do, etc since it began. I don't suspect any of my friends here have either.

Tl;dr shit isn't as crazy for the everyman as you might think

Ordinary people are fine. I'm talking about all the police personnel and everyone who looks like the suspect are in 24/7 pucker mode. Till the guy is caught or dead, it'll be like walking on glass for a long time.

I live within a mile of downtown (2.4 miles from where the attorney whose daughter and son-in-law were killed's condo) and being not-black seems to be the target du jour for the LAPD in this manhunt so far.

In all seriousness though, why exactly do you people think he's looking for sympathy? His manifesto makes it utterly obvious that he's not looking for sympathy. He explains why he chose to do what he did, and considers anyone he kills a necessary evil. Nowhere does it give me a feeling that he's looking for sympathy, and everything about it tells me that just want the cops exposed for what they (in his mind) are. Whether paranoid or not, that's his reasoning. It' quite obvious the actions of a man driven with his back against the corner.

Honestly though, what's the easiest way of getting your message out to the world? By going on a homicidal rampage. Breivik did it, this man is doing it. Sadly, the police response to the situation just enforces what he state in his manifesto. And I'm sure that's exactly the response he wanted out of the police, and is probably the reason he openly threatened their families in it. He threaten their families and kills two of them to whip them in to a frenzy and go in to a protective overdrive mode, making them do rash decisions and create a state of chaos, which will certainly get his message out in to the world.

The coin he sent to CNN was obviously another threat, stating that "nowhere is safe" by showing off his marksmanship.

His manifesto clearly state that he's not expecting to come out of this alive. I'm sure his current plan is to stay hidden and drain the police resources, while sending threats. His plan is to make the police feel like they're not safe anywhere, and the best way for him to do that is to stay alive and not found. He want them to worry about the safety of their loved ones, and he wants the police force to implode on itself by accusing the people he named in his manifesto. Realistically, the LA police force can't protect the friends and family of all its employees, whereas the police themselves are capable of protecting themselves.

If they don't find and/or kill him, the police will eventually be forced to stop the manhunt, and I believe that's when he'll strike again. Not during the manhunt. His manifest seem to hint that he intends to do a war of attrition.

He's clearly deranged (as seen in his manifesto. He's apparently never done anything wrong and everything is the world's fault), but sadly he seem pretty intelligent. And his training makes him very dangerous.
