This might be a little crazy to say, but I loved the grind 55-75 pre-ToAU. the zones were pretty nice to go in. Fighting Coeurls or ganging up on Hobgoblins and Dhalmels. Levelling ninja was very interesting when suicide toss could 1shot you as a taru nin. in my case as well, levelling bst in Attohwa chasm with 6 scorpions vs Tracker Antlion action. It was nice when pets wouldnt depop. I miss it.

for that reason the closest thing I'm choosing is CoP storyline, thats also pretty good.

When I went through CoP, I felt that its storyline had potential, but that it was hindered by far too many extensive, convoluted paragraphs of text that, truthfully, weren't very interesting. I'm perfectly happy with a lot of cutscene dialogue in my games, so long as it's good—I didn't feel that way with a lot of CoP's babbling.

For the longest time, I thought that something may have been lost in translation. Perhaps the original Japanese cutscenes were a lot better, and the English translation was half-assed, resulting in a boring jumble. Well, one day, my significant other and I were playing with a Japanese group, and we were doing something in Abyssea that was taking a long time. (I think that we were camping an avatar together for body seals.) We started talking to them about old school aspects of FFXI, and eventually reached the subject of CoP. I voiced my theory about the original text perhaps having been better, or at least more interesting. Their response?

"No, the Japanese is just like that. It's long and boring."

I learned then that Square Enix's translators can be rather faithful to the source material after all, even if it means the result is about as exciting as watching paint dry.

Yeah, CoP is way more interesting for the fights and the zones than for the story, which is told quite badly. The idea is interesting, but as you say, they make it boring and confusing by talking too much nonsense.

I choose CoP. If I had to make a list of greatest RPG story lines of all time CoP would be right up there.

Valkurm is a close second though. I remember one of the first times I was there, literally days after starting, and trying to make my way to parties camp. A tiger ran in front of me and it freaked me out. (It was a Bst w/ pet of course ) I was like, "omg there are tigers here?!"

Little shocked not seeing more votes for Divine Might non-blm win style. That was an amazing fight.

I think the issue there is that zilart stuff was designed to allow for a lot of the people not being 75 yet, so with a full alliance of 75's with a clue, it wasn't that amazing of a fight really.

Back on Ragnarok I remember camping Fafnir with my shell, we were small and half-decent but not really hardcore. Anyway we claimed Nidhogg last window and it was our first time fighting him and I remember holding it for 25 minutes while our LS leader rushed home from having dinner with friends. He told us after that because he's rich he just dropped like $500 on the table and jet home and he paid the cabbie like $200 to rush home. We got the kill after like 40min and had to sleep it several times to recover but it was our first kill and got E body

Tough choice between starting areas, CoP and Maat fight, but I ended up going with CoP. Going through all of CoP when it was first introduced with a static with pretty screwed up and underleveled job choices was pretty crazy. I have to say, my friend having only a 57 smn at the time, was running around sea, and didn't even have sky access was pretty amusing.

Though, to this day if I log on and go out to Saruta-baruta and start hearing the music for there, I just feel a rush of complete nostalgia come over me.

I still have FRAPSed videos of this at home. It was exhilarating.

Another old school memory of mine involved my being recruited into an early HNMLS, way back in early 2004. At the time, I was on my MNK, sitting in Beaucedine Glacier and camping Nue for his fang. It's lonely, naturally, and quiet.

After hours of this, I receive a /tell from someone I'd never spoken to before. I responded, and we struck up a conversation. They were trying to find people for their HNMLS, and asked me if I wanted to join. I accepted.

Unwittingly, I became the Japanese/English translator for a mostly Japanese LS run by a pubescent North American who didn't know a lick of their language—and I only had rudimentary training in the language. In fact, I was more well-versed in traditional Japanese table manners than the modern tongue, having practiced my Japanese while learning etiquette from an eighty-something tea ceremony teacher.

That's not why he recruited me. That's just what happened.

For me, it isn't strictly music—it's scent, too. This one, in fact. It was all I'd use in the early '00s, and it is amazing, as the second (male) poster in this thread enthusiastically testifies. What about vanilla sugar doesn't go with Windurst, though? The answer is "nothing," because it's Windurst, and why the fuck wouldn't it smell like sugar and cookies?

It's interesting, too, as I'd never associated that scent with anything before, but whenever I use it today, I immediately think of Sarutabaruta circa 2003/2004. The association will probably never go away.

EDIT: And while we're on the subject of nostalgia, if you all haven't heard of the "FINAL FANTASY XI Chips" album, I implore you to check it out—so long as you don't despise chiptune, that is. This piece, which is a medley of all the cities' themes (and Ronfaure, for that matter), is all-around magnificent, but if you're looking for Windurst, that starts a little after the 4:30 mark:

My best moment in FFXI was when an LS mate called me at 3am to tell me Tiamat popped. Shortly thereafter, my newborn baby began to cry. We 5-manned Tiamat and I WHM'd the fight with one hand while bottle-feeding my newborn.

No two ways about that. Can we agree that Mithras are like the illegals from south of the border?
