I miss the days of BRD/NIN tanking. The game died a bit for me when they nerfed Mazurka.
The world was more wondrous, as a lot of players didn't know what they were doing, nor did they care much. You could also flag up for and find parties in a variety of areas, which could require some adventuring to get to.
It was fun at the time, and I made many good memories both pre- and post-PlayStation 2 NA release, but I would not give up today's FFXI to go back to that.
Mining Ifrit's Cauldron perpetually until I had enough gil for a Eurytos' Bow before I even broke G1. Also, the countless number of people I met across three different servers and 9 years of playing. It's weird having random memories in great detail of people I never speak to anymore (or wouldn't even know how to find.)
To this day, I'll make Starfall Hillock my choice of places to start a job, and I still make it my place when I need to restock on copper ingots (off the Yagudoes) and pick up some silk threads and such along the way, some beeswax for alchemy...it's still great for "shopping" for a lot of the stuff I use crafting.
Tom Tit Tat was my first NM kill as a newbie RDM. Those Punches are still in my storage to this day, and since I lost access to the account, they'll be there forever. You still see the occasional newbie there, though more often it's people heading out to go chase down Void spawns.
I dunno man. A lot of things from then were nothing but tedium for the sake of tedium. Of course this was from an era of very different schools of thought in terms of game development. At least they didn't emulate all of EverQuest's gameplay elements, though I'm sure that would've made king camps even more "interesting".
Earliest fond memories -
The Rank 4 mission at the level 50 cap. Running through Castle Oz with 2 alliances led by 2 level 50s. So much aggro, so much death.
Hitting the level cap on weapons in Fei Yin.
Having to pretend to be Japanese to get party invites.
Middle Era:
Hitting 75 DRG at the end of 2004, getting that awful spear from Vouivre. and a Scorpion Harness! Then the TP nerf happened and we all became Rangers.
World shifting to Remora with a few friends when they opened it to monopolize the HNM scene. When we got to the Serket room we realized 4000 other people had the same idea.
Second character:
Finishing CoP with what started as a group of friends and ended up a bunch of people that couldn't stand each other.
But more than anything else - discovering BLU. Took me forever to learn Pollen, I had to coattail a BRD friend to 72, then solo imps the rest of the way. I still never had more fun playing a job. It's the only reason I still play.
I think one of my favorite moments was some Sandoria mission, fighting a Shadow type, it dimensional death-ed this really nice JP PLD (75 omg) and when it was done he typed
"good ruck"
and I tried very hard not to laugh since he was so nice
One specific moment: Beating the Airship fight. It took me 30+ attempts over the course of a year, but I finally got past it. Almost shit my pants when I see the cs start after killing Ultima.
Man, this really makes me want to log in again, but I know I'd just log in and afk in jeuno and do nothing. lol. Sometimes it's just nice to revisit old areas. The headstones for the one RoZ mission. The jungles were always pretty cool. Going around and visiting the places you always feared going due to high lvl mobs. The Windhurst mission that had you go through the monastic cavern with the dragoon orcs that would fuck your shit up. Then you had to go into that burned down house or whatever. Shit was so cash
Every time I've quit ffxi I always get trapped wanting to return from reading the forums and looking at screenshots. I remember all of the good times and how cool it was for all of the "firsts" you'll have within a game. For me it's always like chasing the dragon because it's never the same and usually a disappointment in the end.
Did you get the cash from it before being bant?
