I'm still trying to figure out if that's a good thing or not, given the reprehensible things Christians have done as a collective group for the last eon or so. Gregory XII reluctantly abdicated in 1415 to end a dispute with a rival claimant to the papacy.

However, it is widely believed that Celestine V did not choose to abdicate, and that his eventual successor Boniface VIII forced him into it. He helped push forth the law allowing Popes to resign, a month later he did, and then a few years after that Boniface tracked him down and imprisoned him, and eventually murdered him. So this could be the only "real" pope resignation, unless of course we find out stuff happening behind the scenes.

My TO THE VESTIBULE comment still stands, as that is where Dante placed Celestine in hell. Unless you interpret Dante's "the great refusal" to Pilate, which would make you WRONG GOD DAMN IT.
