Good on him for not shitting on the Atheists. As long as christians don't push their faith forcefully down anyone's throat, i don't see any other people really having issues with them. sure, christians/catholics believe that a zombie is the savior of the planet (said jokingly, btw), but everyone is entitled to believe in something retarded. leave them in peace. i'm all for less retarded posts on my facespace by both parties endlessly shitting on each other and finding ways and reasons to condemn each other. BUT JESUS SAID, BUT SCIENCE SAYS, shut up. just up, and go eat a hot dog in peace, and just shut up. I got sidetracked, and forgot what i was gonna actually say

You were probably going to say something along the lines of "As long as we treat the world around us with a good heart and good works, then we can all share together in happiness"

Suddenly I don't hate the pope anymore.

(j/k, i'm also still mad about the gay marriage thing.)

still, i'm impressed by his message. If nothing else, I hope more of his followers listen to this message, because it cannot be said often enough that people need to work together and not sweat the small stuff, like differences in personal beliefs.

This has always been my way of thinking, and basically the way of thinking of the Catholics I've always been around. It's, unfortunately, not universal among Catholics though.

I've had in my head a thesis paper I've wanted to write on exactly why Catholics should be supporting gay marriage. But I have forever been too lazy to write it. I do hope that the Vatican wakes up and realizes that it's been starting at them right in the face all this time.

The reason he tries to be inclusive of non-christians? He needs support for his anti-abortion efforts which includes trying to coerce the EU parliament.

Well, for the gay marriage thing, i think this is simply one step towards the ultimate goal of genuine inclusiveness. it's not a terribly difficult leap for most of us to go from "atheists are people too" to "gays are people too" but some people need to take things slowly. They'll get there eventually. If they don't, they'll be marginalized, because eventually gays are going to be accepted enough that being openly anti-gay-marriage is going to be like being openly racist right now.

Sure, we can wish they'd move faster, but it takes time to change an organization that's got millenia of momentum.

Which is exactly why I have no time for religious institutions who take centuries to reach logical conclusions due to internal politics, consistency issues and generally wanting to appear timeless which is kinda difficult when you muck around with the rulebook too much. Maybe the Catholic Church and its adherents have another 300 years to reach being accepting of gay marriage and those dreaded Atheists but I sure don't.

This pope seems to want to go down the road of compassionate, open, down-to-Earth Catholicism which is great when the last guy represented everything wrong with large religious institutions but ideas such as the one he presented have been around for quite a while and we know how well some Catholics follow the Pope. And I mean to say they ignore everything the Church preaches (no contraception you horny fucks) and do whatever it is they were gonna do anyway.

The message I get from that homily is the classic "judge not, lest ye be judged." Even if you're not religious, but you're doing your best to lead a lifestyle of doing right by others, you can be recognized by Jesus and enter into a state of grace and be forgiven of sins. We are all created in God's likeness, whether we believe or not, and we all sin. Leave the judging to God and love each other, basically.

this is totally my own interpretation based on what I've come to believe as a catholic so take it with a grain of salt. Catholics believe those who are good people but aren't ready for w/e reason to go to heaven (ie don't believe in God, or did their best to be good but committed a major sin, etc.) go to purgatory. Sort of a resting place where you can improve you spiritual being for heaven, and then go there when ready. The church has been vague on their stance on whether hell is a place or just an eternal state of mine. They agree though that it is reserved for the wicked. I take from this as a reminder that those that try to do good whether in God's name or not will at least get to purgatory. And that we must remember it's God's decision, not ours, on what those there need to do to go to heaven. But yes, ultimately what dbz said, about us needing to stop pointing fingers, and come together to help each other be good people.

Yeah. It's a thing the pedocultists do: insult your (lack of) beliefs and pretend it's an act of kindness.
Personally, I find "you're going to hell, sinful abomination upon our laawwwddd" christians less insulting than "jeeeeebbbus loves you and, if you are "good" (according to our warped bimillenial ethics code), he'll accept you into heaven even though you're just a filthy heathen" christians.

But all of that is moot, anyway, for in the end, Lord Cthulhu devours all and even a christian can earn a relatively painless death if he/she renounces proselytism.
    Yes, even a christian!

i did a little looking around the intarwebs, mostly it talks about jesus sacrificing himself to redeem us from original sin. 1 site seemed to say what i was looking for, idk how true it is, or how widely accepted.

    http://www.gotquestions.org/redemption.html

Question: "What is the meaning of Christian redemption?"

Answer: Everyone is in need of redemption. Our natural condition was characterized by guilt: “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Christ’s redemption has freed us from guilt, being “justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus” (Romans 3:24).

The benefits of redemption include eternal life (Revelation 5:9-10), forgiveness of sins (Ephesians 1:7), righteousness (Romans 5:17), freedom from the law’s curse (Galatians 3:13), adoption into God’s family (Galatians 4:5), deliverance from sin’s bondage (Titus 2:14; 1 Peter 1:14-18), peace with God (Colossians 1:18-20), and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). To be redeemed, then, is to be forgiven, holy, justified, free, adopted, and reconciled. See also Psalm 130:7-8; Luke 2:38; and Acts 20:28.

i'm usualy one of the first to jump on the catholic/organized religion hate train, but as someone with a background in philosophy (just a Ba, but yeah), the theological implications made me skip over the low hanging fruit. even if atheists are only allowed into purgatory thru good deeds, this is a big step. do i trust him? fuck no. but i will absolutely be looking for his next move/pronouncement and paying more attention to him (i'm still not religious btw). even if hes secretly an evil hearted bastard, if he can start getting some of the intolerance out of Christianity then the world would be a better place for it. this has redeemed my faith in humanity..... a little
