Italian 'caffe' goes decaf after OQLF complain
An Italian restaurant in Quebec City is the latest company to run into trouble with the provincial enforcement arm of the Charter of the French Language.
Caffe Conti was ordered to change its name because the owners spelled café in Italian instead of French.
Mathieu Pettigrew, the co-owner of the restaurant, said the first notice from the OQLF arrived 18 months ago, with the the agency informing Pettigrew that spelling 'caffe' with two letter f's was one too many.
The restaurant resisted at first and didn't make any changes because, as Pettigrew said, he thought the demand was ridiculous.
"We were surprised because for all the customers and everyone here it's not a big problem," said Pettigrew.
Then the language watchdog sent the restaurant another notice in November 2012 threatening fines and legal action. That's when Caffe Conti decided to comply.
Are they like, trying to impress France or something?
Id hope not, because going after that wont help anything. They should look to their "kebekwas" who butcher the language..."ben ouais"
Ouf.
I love how the cops, who had time in their busy day of arresting criminals, had to come down and look at the menu, and start circling shit in red marker like a disapproving school marm. Am I the only one who finds that image hilarious?
Better yet, someone made a written complaint about the level of, what I can only imagine as the exact wording used in the complaint, "dego-talk" in an Italian restaurant. Who could possibly have that much free time in their day?
just saying...the "language police" are not "police officers".
Citizens can report a business can't they? I'd imagine its some old geriatric frog wanna be that is hawkish on things of that nature.
Yes, this is their actual job. The govt cut spending for various necessary things (including: education, natural resources, health care, housing) and increased the budget for the "protection of the french language" (what this thread is about more or less)
Goddamn, you poor guys.
Gonna be a while before things get better.
Well there's one silver lining: at least this one can't be blamed on NObama.
What is the Canadian equivalent?
There was one of these french nazi state worker that did an audit at one of the previous place I worked for. The woman pretty much freaked out when she saw that almost everything was in English: US qwerty keyboards, English programming books, random English words written on whiteboards and, le gasp, documents addressed to our US customers were written in English too.
Not too long after that we moved most of this stuff to the Toronto office and then the company finally ended up closing the Quebec division.
are there literal grammar nazis too?
