It has nothing to do with France, it is entirely their own personal issue. If you go to France and see a stopsign, it says "STOP" versus in Quebec where they have translated it. The French typically look down on the Quebecois, the dialect is different and the French of course find it inferior. Quebec also spends a lot of time inventing new French words when normal languages would be more flexible in adopting the more universal term.

I remember games coming out later in Montreal than in Ontario growing up, I'd either have to wait or hope I could get to the US/Ontario before picking it up. There are also food products that weren't available in Quebec because it was too much work to get the nutritional info translated versus the amount of profit. I could never return to work in Montreal if I wanted because I don't know enough french to be able to, and it would be stressful. Too bad because its a great city.

I think they've had 2 referendums now to try to separate from Canada? I don't know if they plan on ever trying again but if they win I can't imagine it working out in the end.

2 referendums ya. This city really is great tho. It would supercede toronto if it werent for les quebecois dragging shit down with their outdated idealogies.

I've been in Montreal for three years already and am only here still because I went back to college so I can have a Canadian degree to get a better job but seriously some people are very anal about French. I bought a Mac mini on Christmas' Eve at the Apple Store and the salesman only answered me back in French, I asked him for the Mac mini, he pulls out this iphone type of device and picks a Mac Mini French (have no idea why they have SKUs separated by language since you can change the language) and I told him English one, went to pick a keyboard and on the way, he tells me he'll get me a French keyboard and I answered back (at this point in French since he wouldn't use english) that I wanted it in English, I get my stuff and notice the keyboard is in French ...... he switched it for an English one. I bought the Mac and the accessories but was annoyed that the salesman forced French down my throat (not so much the speaking it but the keyboard thing), and he was not quebecois de souche (native quebecer) either. I will say the city is great and as I have heard from many anglophones, this city would be better if not for the quebecois mentality.

    Also relevant:
Here are some cases that have attracted the interest of the language watchdog or people seeking to protect the French language:

1996: A woman warns the owner of a Quebec pet store she might get in touch with language authorities because Peekaboo, the parrot she wanted to buy, didn't speak French.
1999: The Old Navy chain is asked to rename its stores "La Vieille Rivière." It never happens.
2000: The owner of an Indian restaurant is told he's breaking the law by having coasters for "Double Diamond," a British beer.
2001: Some people express disappointment that race-car driver Jacques Villeneuve calls his restaurant "Newtown."
2005: Language authorities say they will investigate complaints that Montreal Mayor Gérald Tremblay's party used the word "Go" on its campaign posters and pamphlets, as in "Go Montreal."
2007: Imperial Oil says it will keep its Quebec-only "Marché Express" name for its Esso gas stations after protests against a proposal to change the name to "On the Run," as the stations are known elsewhere in North America.
2007: Language activists decry that callers to many Quebec government offices are told to "press nine" for English before instructions are delivered in French. Some of the departments have since changed the message to put English at the end.

The french look down on everyone and the parisians look down on other frenchmen. It's a self-reinforcing loop of cultural isolationism and superiority complexes.
And actually, they do tend to look down a lot less on the Quebecois than on other people.

As far as English loanwords are concerned, it's hard to say wether the french are more restrictive or the quebecans: indeed, "STOP" has long entered mainstream french but is translated in Quebec.
On the other hand, some anglicisms are specific to Quebec and some words are invented by the French Academy that nobody outside France (and even some frenchmen) care to use, especially in the IT field.
It's really on a per-word basis, both quite weird.
In other European french-speaking countries (Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland), we're a lot more laid-back about those things.
Perhaps partly because french is just a language we happen to speak, but not the tongue of our ancestors ...hell, even my paternal grandfather spoke more Wallonian than actual french.

It's a bit like us going to example to bc with air canada and cat be served in French

Which personally I don't care since my English is actually better then what I show on these forums ( not joking).

But I do admit the government is going too far.

But on the other end. With the red square students, the Montreal and Laval corruption what can you expect?

I want to go to quebec, and any time someone says "merci" I'll say "NO MERCY, ONLY DEATH" and then run them over with my tank.

I'm sure the student protestors there would like your tank for their protests against hiking tuition.

It wouldn't surprise me if this weren't a joke.

French govt bans authentic atmosphere to preserve french language...WAT
Haha can you imagine if the U.S. tried to enforce this with English? The political poopdeck forum would be /popcorn for a week.

And this is why the Canadiens are on the downswing; refuse to hire a non-French speaking coach even if said coach is far superior to French speaking alternatives.

Jesus I wish the U.S. would enforce English as a national language. English is the international language of business - people that aren't learning it are fucking themselves over. The French can go fuck themselves.
