Good lord you two. I'm usually more of a spelling perfectionist than anyone else, but screw up once?
Spoiler: show
Haha sorry, it's a pet peeve. No offense.
As long as were discussing spelling errors...common ones I dealt with throughout FFXI:
Windhurst
whipe
scorpian
theif is a common one i see.
indeed. it's supposed to be spelled "Treasure Hunter". ooh. that's a double joke.
My main pet peeve non-word was always "comming"
Or common for come on. Unless I was just being called a common man.
I always wondered if whine cellar key is supposed to be wine cellar key...
You're kidding right? Whine Cellar Key is a joke >_> It says it's a key to a room holding someone whiny.
It was, and if I recall rightly, the doll inside was whiny![]()
No, it's correct. I don't know what the original Japanese says, and I assume that the other languages' translations are taken from the English original, but the German and French versions of FFXI have closely related names. In German, it's "Heulkammer-Schlüssel," which Google Translate chokes on, but it means "Howl Chamber Key." Their descriptions are likewise similar. So, the pun probably wasn't in the original Japanese, but the part involving the noisiness was.
It's called "Key to the Noisy Room" in Japanese, with the description "A key to a room in which someone noisy is sealed." So yeah, they just added the joke in the translation.
After thinking about it more, I realized how to determine that the German and French versions did use the English version as their base, even though they did not use an approximation of the joke. "Heulen" can also mean "whine," so they translated "Whine Cellar Key" directly into German, when they could have used something like "Lautraum-Schlüssel" if they'd gone directly from Japanese... but the description itself is just as humorless as the Japanese original.
Ah, the magic of localization.
