Windows XP dies 1 year from today

Win8 isn't as bad as people are making it out to be. I will admit in the beginning there was a learning curve. I'm starting to develop a theory that most people who hate Win8 are people that use the mouse for most navigation and don't really use keyboard shortcuts...

The interface is shit. I find myself having to use my mouse more often, not less. What really gets me is that they put that rubbish on top of Server 2012. That is not at all what I want in an interface when managing a server.

I like that menu, and the multi-monitor support, but there are still things in 8 that are really questionable. Besides the Start menu stuff. Removing system font control, for example. Or the "doin' updates in 15 minutes" thing that'll seriously just restart the machine with several things open, no way to tell it to go away for a while. Granted, it's supposed to only do that after 72 hours of you not letting it - but I've had my machine do it after having had ample idle time to update in.

It not being quite as bad as it can be made out to be doesn't change that it still has a massive influx of MS Hubris.


Far as the original topic, haven't been installing XP at work for a while, though we still have machines that are running it. I doubt we will go to 8, just like we never installed Vista.

We have probably 70% Windows XP still out there since we just recently upgraded everything to work with IE8 so... yea... Right now we're in the process of deploying W7 desktops with Zero clients and VMview. We still have plenty of Server 2003's though and a few server 2000's.

I only used windows 8 for about 30 minutes and in my time i never once saw that menu. not sure where it is or how to access it, but its not readily apparent. All i wanted to do was get to run a command prompt and i looked through the interface for 10 minutes before i just said fuck this and alt ctrl del and finally got something familiar the task manager and was able to run from there.

It just made me rage not being able to find shit that was literally a click away before.

Backtreading in this thread abit, but how the fuck is the Navy still stuck on XP, or is it mostly just your unit? I'm pretty sure the computers at the CIWS School in Naval Base San Diego were running Vista when I went thru 3 years ago. USCG made the "leap" (more like a tumble down the staircase) to Vista around the sametime, and we're so far behind the times I can't imagine us actually being ahead of the DOD in something.

Because they predicted the future, therefore understanding that Windows 7 would be vastly superior, and knew that they'd be ahead of you suckers by waiting until the last minute and upgrading then. You think you're ahead? Think again.

A lot of schools, at least to my knowledge, still use XP on their computers around here. I wonder if this will force them to upgrade to 7 next year.
