Years ago, I think it was around 2006 or 2007, I remember there was an announcement from SE saying that someone was in legal trouble for some kind of hack attack on FFXI or POL servers which led to the servers being down. I can't remember exactly. I think they said it was just one person who was responsible for doing it. I've done a search though and I can't seem to find anything relating to this. Does anyone remember anything like that from around that time? It just randomly popped into my head a couple of days ago and I thought one of you guys might know something.

I believe if I recall correctly he-must-not-be-named also had the ability to disconnect players around him (proven by knocking off several fish bots). I recalled a conversation/picture/screenshot where the GM didn't believe him (while in jail), and then proceeded to do the deed, and disconnected the GM. The GM logged back in and was like "well i'll be damned" (not exact words).

And that was long before Play as Monster would be released.
Real Tanaka is still trapped, the one hanging around in the real world who got kicked out of SE is a high tech japanese clone.

this bug could be used zone wide as well.

He stole a bunch of characters and server transferred them so he could give his gf all the gears. I'd say that was pretty terrible.

idk, that memory just makes me laugh because gf tried to pretend to be innocent, but I knew she wasn't (she had stolen my LS bank before even meeting the guy), and I had a bunch of people raging on me to "LEAVE HER ALONE SHE DIDN'T KNOW" until it turned out she did.

Anyone know if the guy who did it actually went to jail? Or how long for? I think in the announcement they built him up into some kind of criminal genius. A bunch of different agencies, cops and FBI were all involved in the hunt for him totaling thousands of man hours (something like that). Amazing that one guy could cause so much trouble.
