1 is more likely in my opinion. I've done some more soul pyres since I was trying to farm simulacrum pieces (still haven't seen one in a soul pyre...), and the times I got more that 100% it was in the other direction.

That being said, has anyone got anything less than 5%? I'm guessing it increases in 5% intervals (never got a number not divisable by 5), so I'm proposing the theory that it checks in 0.5 yalm increments, making the max 120% at 12 yalms. Therefor, if you get 30%, the correct spot is roughly 3 yalms away.

At first I thought the distortion might be proportional to your distance from the sweet spot, but I'm not sure about that now. I think it's more like distance and direction each constitute half of your reading. So if the spot is 1 yalm away from the pyre on the south side, from 1 yalm away on the north side you'll get a half-of-max distortion, even though you're only 2 yalms away from the spot.

All the readings I've seen have been multiples of 5.

I’ve got some questions for those of you who have seen more pyres than me. (Some of this repeats what I mentioned before, but I’m putting it all together with some additional stuff.) First, an example of the kind of conclusions we’ll be able to draw if we correctly answer these questions:

“The smallest distortion I was able to get while determining distance was 60%. That’s half the maximum, which means my direction is exactly wrong. All I have to do is go over to the east side of the pyre instead of the west, at this same distance, and I’ll be able to open it.”

That statement operates under a couple of assumptions. The goal here is to figure out the correct numbers and mechanics so no assumptions are necessary. One is that the maximum distortion is 120%. I know it’s > 100, having gotten 105 once myself, so I went with Uzor’s idea:

That leads to the other assumption. Unlike Uzor’s statement, which treats the distortion as being a function of your distance from the opening-spot, my statement assumes that distance and direction each contribute separately and equally to the distortion.

Figuring out the maximum distortion should be easy. If you’ve seen one higher than what’s been posted already, starting with my 105, post yours. I guess if it seems absurdly high, a screenshot would be nice.

For the other stuff, feel free to comment as you see fit, but here’s one way of considering it: Compare two situations. First, what they have in common: You just used a pair of specs, got a 0% distortion, and are on the east side of the pyre. Since you have some time left before the pyre disappears, you decide to help the ffxi community by using a pair of specs from the same distance on the west side of the pyre. Then you go back to the east side to open it, but the pyre times-out, and you curse me for eternity.

In situation A, the 0% distance is 2 yalms. In situation B, it’s 5 yalms. What happens with the wrong side distortions? Are they identical (maybe half of max distortion) because they are both exactly-correct-distance and exactly-wrong-direction, or is the distortion larger for situation B because you’re farther from the spot (not the pyre) than you are in situation A?

Friend and I have actually done stuff like that, find 0% then use specs from various points away locked on to me.
The distance doesn't always come out the same. Sometimes 20% is .8 away sometimes it 2.2 away etc. Heck I've been at 10% then moved like .1 distance and it was suddenly 50%.

Two ideas to consider: X-Y coordinates with X represented as angle from a given axis (Unknown axis) and two points work.

I've opened a few Soul pyres by starting at N direction and 3 yalms. If the distortion is greater than 50% I know that it is not in the North direction, so I try a new direction and same amount of yalms. If the distortion is say 15%, then I move closer or further away to try and reach that 0%, but at that point I usually have the correct direction.

Anyone else been boned and had a pyre show up next to the wall and been unable to open it... the correct point may be unreachable
