    Moving SSD to another laptop

I'm sending my laptop in for warranty before it ends; been meaning to do it for a while now.

That being said, I'm borrowing my old laptop (gave to a friend a year ago when I got the new one).

Can I just take the SSD out of the one I'm a bout to send in and put it in this one? I'll obviously need a new display driver, but should there be any other issues? or am I fine just putting it in and picking up where I left off.

You could try, but just don't be surprised if Windows bluescreens on startup. If it actually does boot, it'll need to install device drivers for just about everything, and Activation will break. Then it'll be similarly annoying when you put it back in your other PC.

I'd just use a USB adapter or something for the time being, if you need data from the SSD.

Technically you could, it's just going to be a pain in the ass to get it working again and it'll never work properly.

Glad I got a second opinion after one person simply responded "yes"

To go with what Xopher need, is that if Chipset and other shit is not the same, you can get BSOD and have to fix that shit

Then Windows is a bitch if you change 3 major hardware components it will ask to reactivate again,

So you<ll have to do those for the new laptop and redo them when you get your laptop back

So in short, not worth it

Also if it's anything like XP; a format ties a hdd (or SSD in this case) to a specific computer, which makes it kinda impossible to read. (doggone permissions!)

If you need data off it, you'll need a Linux disk and a USB holder thing to plug it in. It proly won't be bootable but you can get your data.

Not usually the case for vanilla ICH stuff. Possibly with RAID controllers/volumes. Usually with plain ol' laptop hardware, the issue is booting Windows with the wrong drivers/configuration.

If it did work you would have gotten very lucky and lots of stuff would still be broken. MUCH easier to just reinstall.

What pretty much everyone said. It might work, but the odds are against you, and the situation is grim.
Wouldn't recommend it unless you are desperate.

Didn't know that Isiolia but I've never had to mess with SSDs before. But yeah, it still might be a safer bet to use the Linux trick to get any data off it you can.

If you do want to try anyway best bet is to do this http://windows7easy.wordpress.com/20...n-to-a-new-pc/ uses sysperp to make it more likely to work.

Would still need to reinstall drivers

    Reactivate windows and all

    Still not worth it
