    Monitor - Request for Comment

So it is finally, actually looking like I'll be able to build a PC this year (possibly as soon as Haswell). That exact topic is something for later, but while I'm waiting a bit on that there is something I could and kind of need to get beforehand.

It was always my plan to hook both my PC and PS3 through the same monitor. A number of things recently have increased my need to connect my PS3 to something not the living room television.

Now for a while my plan was to get an ASUS VH236H (the EVO monitor), but it seems it's gone out of production (or supply is low atm, but I've seen nothing in the news like with HDDs). Newegg is out of stock, and the price is above what it should be on Amazon, and only random sellers have it.

So, what is the successor? Newegg has such a variety that I can't make it out. (linky, also, what the hell is the difference between VE, VH, VX, VN, VS, etc. ? ASUS's site was useless for finding out)

Does anyone besides ASUS make affordable and reliable low response time monitors?
Is there anywhere I can get a better deal?

    Do:
Gaming and Video (low response time, decent colors)
Quality, Reliable, "Tough" (Not prone to image retention, bleeding, getting crappy over time, etc)
Under $200 (I ain't made of money, i might be convinced to tack on 50 if the monitor is absolutely guaranteed to last over a decade)
Bonus: Built-in Speakers: I don't have a separate sound solution for the PS3 yet, HDMI means if I want to hear anything, it's going to need to be through the monitor. (Though if you have an affordable solution, I'd like to know about it, but I'll probably make a separate thread another time.)
Bonus: VESA mounting (I'll be sticking it on one of those arm mounts eventually, so weight might be a factor too.)

    Don't
    3D: Don't need it, don't care
2560x1440: Too expensive, 1080 is fine for me.
Crazy smooth refresh rates: Again, probably too expensive
    Gigantic 28"+ screens: Nah.
    Multi monitor setups: -.-
(Seriously, this is why I'm asking here, everywhere I've tried to look up monitor info, everybody's going nuts over these kinds of monitors, and they all seem to have 300-600 dollar pricetags.)

    Thanks for any help.

I have 3 LG 24" monitors that have 2-3 ms response time. They've been great.

    Edit: I have 3 of these. http://www.pinnaclemicro.com/compute...FYPd4AodBygAyA

That price is pretty damn good too.

Really nice deal on a worthwhile monitor: http://slickdeals.net/permadeal/9510...80-led-monitor - $189 for a Dell u2312hm. Can check the thread for discussion but I would say fucking jump on this for an 23" IPS monitor with low input lag and response that's good enough for gaming without being a TN.

    Review: http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u2312hm.htm

Conclusion: The Dell U2312HM was pretty much everything we have come to expect from a Dell UltraSharp screen. It was pleasing to see Dell have stuck with an e-IPS panel and the decent feature and function set of the older model (U2311H) has been retained. The major technology change here is the move away from CCFL and towards a W-LED backlighting unit. In practical terms this only really offers the end user a slightly thinner profile and a slightly lower power consumption compared with the older screen. There are environmental advantages as well and it's a big trend at the moment so you can see why its been done with this model and others in their range.

From a performance point of view I was impressed in a couple of areas particularly. The input lag was incredibly low and basically this screen had no lag at all. Panel uniformity from our retail stock sample was also very good which was a positive sign considering there have been mixed reports and issues in the past with lower cost e-IPS screens. Let's hope other experiences are the same. Default colour setup was good as well, and responsiveness was very good, making it one of the faster 23" IPS models we have tested for sure. On the other hand I was a little disappointed by the quite low contrast ratio of 710:1 once calibrated. This was moderate for an IPS panel and not what we had hoped for considering what we had seen on other recent IPS screens, including the 24" U2412M.

I pulled the trigger on the VH238H on Newegg.
They just put it down to $150 again, tomorrow is the last day to qualify for the additional $20 MIR, they opened up free shipping for it, and added an additional $10 gift card (because hey, it's pretty likely I'm getting more stuff from them).

Now to wait on Haswell CPU/Mobo real-world reviews and prices, and see how bad the GTX 700 series prices will be (seriously, weren't the launch prices of the 400 & 500 series like $100 less than their same numbered 600 series counterparts?) and if AMD is going to change their mind on doing an 8000 series.
I may actually get stuck on the Intel integrated graphics for a few months until a sure thing shows up.

Was looking at this one myself since it's $80 less than it's 24 inch counterpart (I'm assuming specs are the same/similar, just an inch smaller?)

also was wondering how it compared to a few ASUS IPS monitors with a slightly lower price tag.

    http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-VS239H-P-...words=asus+ips

    http://www.amazon.com/Asus-VS229H-P-...words=asus+ips

    http://www.amazon.com/Asus-VS247H-P-...words=asus+ips

    http://www.amazon.com/Asus-VS238H-P-...words=asus+ips

Basically to me since they're similar enough in price (aside from the 22 inch which is considerably less) are specs, then hdmi vs dell's ability to go vertical (which would be amazing for manga)

Edit: Also how much of an upgrade is the VS239H-P to the VS238H-P?

Can't speak to the differences between the ASUS monitors, it's kind of what makes monitor shopping half-impossible because there are so many models to test. As for the Dell vs. Asus, I can say the Dell has been given tons and tons of praise for tested specs that are relevant to gaming. On top of that, if the stand is the same between all those Asus monitors, the Dell is a huge upgrade in that department, too. The stand it comes with is super fucking nice as far as weight, adjustments it offers and function whereas the Asus stands are non-adjustable and pretty barebones.

Also I haven't had a problem using adapters to get around the loss of HDMI, the only annoying part has been if you have to use DVI to HDMI for all your devices because switching it between computer to console and back is kind of a pain. Not a problem if you can use VGA or displayport, though.

I can't really answer better than Woo, cause what you asked whas mostly the same as what I asked and a lot was unanswered for mine.
But I can help with comparing the four you listed. Newegg has a compare tool, even if you shop from Amazon, it's still handy. I've thrown up the ones you've asked on, here.

It's just hard because without in-depth tests from places like tftcentral, the hardware specs can be reeeaaaally meaningless with the way they're allowed to play with the numbers

Looking at this review of the Asus, I would say if the stand doesn't bother you and you aren't playing shit like fighters and FPSs competitively, then the Asus is probably worth the savings. The extra $30 seems pretty fair for the extra luxuries the Dell has so either way you're good. Whether you want to spend $170 or $200 you're going to get a good monitor.

Went with the Asus. We'll see how the decision turns out
