I get the impression by now that you don't play through the campaign if you haven't read the books and shit. If you don't have the patience for that, then you probably just go straight to deathmatch as soon as you unwrap the game.

I read the first six books a few years back, and finally played Halo 4 last year with a friend, and it was some nonsensical bullshit. I can't imagine someone doing campaign 1-3 and then playing 4 and understanding what the fuck is going on.

I played through the campaigns of all the games but ODST and Reach, but Halos 1-4 were very on rails and you only get a small glimpse of a much larger picture. I didn't realize the books expanded this much on the lore. I definitely want to read through them all but I have to finish AFFC/ADWD and the last 2 witcher books before I pickup anything else.

EDIT: Another thing is that I'm not sure where exactly the neogaf thread is getting all the info, if its just solely from the books or if the new terminals they added in MCC expanded more on everything. If I get my $400 bonus next month I might spend it on a Xbone and MCC.

John (and the other kids who became the first few generations of Spartans (I think the Spartan IIs and IIIs.. I want to say the Is might have been before they started using kids?)) were kidnapped at age 6 and replaced with clones designed to die soon after. One of the films in Halo: Legends (Homecoming) goes into it with one of the other Spartans.

Spartan Is were adult-aged volunteers, the project was codenamed Orion. Johnson was one of the subjects.

The flash clones had short lifespans, this stuff is almost definitely ONI propaganda.

Also the alternate cover art seems to be part of a puzzle which appears to feature Locke's Team on one side and Chief's on the other. Chief's team appears to be none other than Blue Team (Fred, Kelly, Linda).
