I own 2 Boxee boxes and since they dropped support for them I'm looking at this to maybe replace them.
Roughly the same idea just better, right?

Uhh hurray I guess, or should I still be checking out Best Buy?
I am so pissed. I managed to order it on Amazon the first day it came out. Then they fucked up the shipping and lost it. Now I have to wait. Amazon says 2-3 months but Google Play said 2-3 weeks so I paid the extra $6 and ordered it from there. Amazon did give me a $10 credit though and a refund.
I want mine for the other 2 TVs in my house that are not next to my PC.
Got mine the other day, works great.
Top tip: If you've set up the chromecast with another device and then try to use a mac...just download the googlecast extension from chrome.
Spent ages trying to figure it out and ended up having to call their supportline (who were great btw).
I'm reading about dozens and dozens of apps that will be available once Google takes the API out of beta. Apparently miracast-like streaming will be baked in to CyanogenMod, there are apps to play any local content, and much, much more. I'm starting to wonder if the dongles themselves aren't really Google's main play here, but to get the spec so well entrenched that TV makers start including it baked into the hardware.
So semi-related, I read today that if you live in the Netherlands you get all NFL games for free. (I guess that's just the way they are set up there?). Since I have a VPN, I connected there, started the stream of tonight's game, disconnected from the VPN, and started casting that tab to the living room TV. It worked like a charm. It's pretty much everything that Sunday Ticket gets you (including the RedZone stuff) for free.

Great tips. Learned to open and cast local files (ctrl + o; no specific menu button).
Any updated news on this? I just ordered one. I'm most interested to find out
1) if the API is out of beta
2) if VLC has a plugin yet
3) how do I tell a file to play in a chrome tab if VLC isn't working yet?
I don't know about VLC, but I just drag and drop the video I want to watch into the browser tab that is casting. Been working great for all my porn. >;P
Doesn't seem to work with MKVs
1 - It is not, and there's no real specific indication on when it will be. Some have speculated it will be with the release of KitKat (and updated Android integration) but the reality is we just don't know.
2 - There's no plug-in yet, although presumably one will make its way in when the API becomes official.
3 - Many files will open directly in chrome but as you said. mkv's can have some problems (mostly audio related IIRC). You could also look into setting up Plex and then casting that tab which I've done and works well.
From what the bits and pieces I see around the web, it sounds like there will be a ton of apps supporting this as soon as they are allowed. Several players on Android already have it figured out and are just waiting to be allowed to distribute the update.
so, I've got mine. Holy shit. This thing is awesome! One of the biggest problems I had with streaming to a ps3 was the syncing of audio to video and connectivity. So far it's disconnected a few times, but I think that's cause I'm having issues with a wireless repeater. Audio/video sync is PERFECT.
I could see a few really cool applications for this thing. I need to buy a few more for the living room and the kids room. I've already been able to play in the living room and off the PC itself, so why not send another movie to another Chrome tab? I can't wait till remote support applications get ahold of the API. Add bluetooth and let it connect to a keyboard and mouse and you've got a seriously powerful tool.
Debating getting one for my gf, right now I just plug my laptop into her TV through an hdmi to watch Netflix/YouTube but sooner or later I'm gonna have to take the laptop home.
Worth it for that?
It wont work from your home, has to be on the same local network.
As long as she has a computer, smart phone, or tablet, then yes it will work. Also, for the cost, this has been the best thing i've bought in a while. I have one for my living room and basement (Basement doesn't have shit on it, so its nice to be able to watch HBO down there if i want.)
You can now cast Pandora.
